Physical media = Simplicity, flexibility, freedom. Streaming = complicated, controlled, limits. Both are good but I prefer physical for my favorites.

I agree with your opinion, but I have to say: For many consumers it's the other way around: - Streaming is simple: Choose what you want to watch from your couch (trailers are available!). No need to search for new movies, everything is served to you. - Flexible: You can watch on your TV, on your smartphone or your PC, whatever suits you at the moment. - Freedom: Take the movies/shows with you, all you need is an internet connection and your login data. Of course fans of physical media like us see it differently! :)

You also have to pay for internet. If for whatever reason, your internet goes down.. you are screwed. One example is "Dawn of the Dead" the original on DVD and or Blu-ray was/is difficult to get. Let's face it, eventually what will happen is Disney / Netflix / Prime will end up buying these companies & making everything new to "streaming only". Maybe Disney will even buy Netflix. (Disney now owns the streaming rights the five Marvel series that were previously Netflix only exclusive [ Jessica Jones / Punisher / Daredevil / Luke Cage / Iron Fist ] ).

I never even considered the concept of streaming movies until health problems forced me to rely on others to get me to a cinema on a regular basis. Occasionally I just want to see a movie without the disc expense then if I like it but it then. Do most of my streaming on TUBI which is completely free. Nothing quite as aggravating as purchasing a HD of a movie, watching the thing once then leaving it on the shelf. 🎃

I was up to about 60 but then I had this thought: In 10 years time the best way to watch movies will be with a VR type headset, or if not, it will be on a futuristic screen that has no outlets for blu-ray players. So basically, the movies I love would be better watched not on physical media. Returning to disks for some nostalgia will be nice, but not worth collecting hundreds of movies for (for me). Although I sold off a lot of my collection, I still kept my player aswell as a few of my all time favorites. That's not to put anyone off starting or growing a collection, it's still worth doing, that was just thought process. 👍

My main concern right now with anything own by big studios is censorship on previews titles due to the type of social climate we are currently living. One example that comes to mind is a cut scene in the re-released to disc from Toy Story 2. Or the change made by Netflix on the stream of back to The future movie. I keep my hopes that sometime we will see some of those older tv shows and movies having a physical media release again, but who knows, these are uncertain waters we are drifting into and because of this, the FOMO and OOP are more present than ever.

I feel like this is already noticeable with some shows. Some of the bigger ones still get releases but smaller ones don’t. And the biggest problem is that it’s those smaller ones that you might not even find on streaming platforms like you find the bigger ones. And I’m also worried that at some point studios might stop physical releases because they view the market as too niche and think that by stopping physical releases of popular shows altogether they can drive even more people into subscribing to their streaming service since that will be the only place to see those movies/shows.
@naturallawman2965

@@TheCinemaniac agreed. But I think what will happen is niche shows & movies will increasingly move to boutique labels for exclusive releases for physical only. I think the major movies, like when Fast & Furious 8's extended cut was digital-only, will move to streaming/digital-only releases.

Yeah, there are a few OOP titles where I found "unofficial" versions of them, such as Dead Alive/Braindead and Dogma. They are not available on streaming or digital at all anywhere, and the Blu Rays are long OOP so this is literally the ONLY way they are available. But with Dead Alive/Braindead, Peter Jackson has apparently been working on a 4K restoration of that movie, so if it ends up getting re-released officially on 4K, I will be more than happy to buy the official release and delete my "unnoficial" copy (but until then, this is the only way to watch it).

This is a constant struggle with me and I'm not very savvy to the game. I can spend maybe $50 a month on movies (it doesn't really work out that way, but averages) and there's way too much to choose from. This is compounded by the fact that I'm really bad at budgeting credit card and usually set my entertainment budget aside in cash and spend it until it's gone. The sad side of that is that my collection has more recent blockbusters (though ones I like) than they would actually represent of my favorites. Then, I do panic buy for a Kino sale or something and the credit card bill is out of hand. The perfect place for me are the multiple conventions I go to each year where I can physically look at the boutique label titles, talk to the seller who does know the game, and pay cash. But I'm not really complaining. These are first-world problems and I can live with them. Even the OOP stuff is out there if you're patient and willing enough.

It's a slightly different equation as to what appears on streaming if you live outside the US and Canada (and to a lesser extent the UK), part of why i started buying physical media is because it's often the only "legal" way of watching these titles and i don't even mean the extremely niche titles. It can sometimes be both a curse and a blessing, sometimes we get situations where Netflix streams Star Trek or Umbrella releases Megaforce on Blu-Ray for the first time in the world and other times shows like The Expanse just aren't available because it's between services for almost a year. Oh and i'm lucky enough to live in an English speaking country, I've been told it's worse for Non-English territories

I think one of my concerns for hard copy is a lost cause and that's whether there's any hope of anyone restoring films that fell into public domain and now exist mostly in horrible copies whether hard copy or even streamed. I'm thinking of some very important films historically like :The Front Page" "Nothing Sacred" or "The Scarlet Pimpernel" - all from the thirties. Restoration is expensive and I fear these are lost. I liked something that Films at Home's latest podcast guest brought up. The streaming companies are spending $$$ to remaster obscure titles to beef up their libraries, but once the master is done, it's a lot more likely to be put on disc. Props for mentioning M SQUAD, one of my all-time favorite series. I've had the crappy Timeless DVD set for, I dunno, 10 years? And watched each episode at least twice, most probably 3x. Lee Marvin was the man. One thing you don't get into (not complaining, you wanted to keep it short) is restoration; M SQUAD is at best "OK" looking, but many episodes are very close to unwatchable. Nobody's likely to put any money into rejuvenating a 117-episode TV series though unless it's STAR TREK level of popularity. And the same goes for all those old movies that don't have big stars, didn't win awards, weren't big at the box office, or aren't in currently-marketable genres (film noir and horror being the two that will always sell). There are loads of 40s-50s 2nd-tier musicals, adventure films (Arabian Nights type stuff, pirate films in particular), and westerns that just aren't available except in abysmal copies - and I for one will look for "other" ways to see this stuff if my only other way is to buy an Alpha Video. So if the market for us collectors continues to slowly contract, or even just stays about the same, I don't see much chance for many of these titles to get brought back to real life. You can see them, but it'll be like 15th-generation VHS dupes. And I'm afraid I see this as even less likely in the mostly-streaming world we've entered into. And as someone else mentions, with streaming the owner can just cut the title out at any time, and then we're left with nothing unless we find it in other ways. If we own a physical copy, it's ours forever.
@CerealAtMidnight

A year or so ago, I asked one of my sources in the restoration field if they thought those old Timeless Media Group releases and other, similar fifties television shows were ever going to get a restoration, possibly with crowdfunding. He told me no, that ship sailed 20 years ago or more, and now it's very unlikely to ever happen because 1) the film elements are in bad shape or are lost, 2) the audience for those shows is very small now, and 3) the return on an investment to restore them simply isn't there. I know some of those shows had to be completed using fan-sourced 16mm prints from private collectors because that was all that survived! It looks like you and I will probably be stuck with our M Squad DVDs with nothing better coming along. But hey, at least we get to watch it!

The statement "nothing is really gone" unfortunately is not always true..For those of us with a taste for the stuff that's truly off the radar, there are many movies that I have been waiting for, for years. Some of those movies only exist on super-crappy VHS tapes, with awful quality and missing scenes. I have a wish list of titles that I'm hoping will be brought back from obscurity..beloved movies like the Graffiti drama "Dreams Don't Die" from 1982, or "Dreams Come True," the erotic love story about Astral Projection, or the 1983 film "Scarred" about street prostitution, and "Off the Minnesota Strip" to name a few....There are so many lost films and it's sad.

Hey guys New to the channel. I listened to you on Jeff's films at home and loved your interview. I just started collecting again myself up to almost 750 movie's but here's where I'm different and get back lash on things. I won't just buy to buy the movie and have it. I will only buy movies I grow up on or if I'll watch it more than once. And of course what my wife like A.K.A (HORROR) what I'm having a hard time finding is Robot Jox for a decent price $80 to $100 for a bluray is crazy. I just wonder why some movie's are more important than others!

I just picked up a few DVDs that don't have blu-ray editions, & a few where the blus are OOP & going for $35+ on eBay. There have been quite a few blus lately that I've found are out of print & going for oodles on eBay. You never know if you should wait. Sometimes they go back in print, or another company puts it out. I discovered Disturbing Behavior is OOP, & was debating just forking over the cash for it, then found out MVD Rewind is releasing a blu-ray soon. I'm still kicking myself for missing out on the Tank Girl blu-ray. I won't pay $70+ for a blu-ray that's not a limited edition box set or something along those lines. Then there are the movies that we've never & will never get on blu-ray, hell, some not even DVD. If I know one of my favorite movies is owned by Disney, I let go of my hope for a release. Past Buena Vista & Touchstone titles don't seem to be coming to blu-ray. We've seen what happens when 20th Century gets the Disney 4K treatment. Disney has all the money & capabilities to give us everything we want, but they won't. That was never more evident than on the 75th Anniversary of Snow White, when they gave us yet another blu-ray instead of a 4K. I didn't care about that one, but now we're getting repeat blu-rays of movies I have been waiting on 4Ks of, like The Emperor's New Groove. 😒 Sorry, I just realized I got a bit off topic. 😳

I sure hope you're right about Fox. Robert Altman's film version of MASH is in my top five list of films I would love to see on 4K (or at least an improved Blu-ray transfer). I also think it's excellent advice that everyone should decide for themselves how much to spend on releases. I don't mind paying more for something I really want. But I use my own criteria to decide how much I want to spend and ignore many of the ridiculous prices on eBay.

I don't think it's gonna be a huge problem. There are numerous boutique labels stepping in to pick up the slack. Labels like Eureka, Kino Lorber, Shout! and numerous others are distributing older and assorted OOP titles. Also sometimes the Studios will release more obscure or OOP titles in box sets - eg I have Niagara in an 8-film Marilyn Monroe box set, and some of those titles are hard to get too. Australian label [Imprint] is releasing many never-before-released and OOP titles, in runs of of 1500-2000 units for the collectors editions and print more if they're really successful.

I think the battle is over between streaming services and cable but what you said about DVDs is patently incorrect. When you said that a DVD only sells 10,000 copies I thought that was pretty strange because a lot of people collect movies. I went and looked at last year's numbers and the top selling DVDs. Sold close to 700,000 copies and made over 15 million. There were over 100 movie and television titles that did more than a million dollars. So physical media isn't going anywhere just yet.

Disney has a responsibility to restore many of their 20th century fox movie back catalog that are culturally reliant and movie history. Fight club on 4k should have come out years ago. Planet of the Apes, Alien, & the x-files are all properties they could be making new movies or tv episodes and restoring and distributing new 4K restorations on physical media. If they can’t get excited about their own movie back catalog and are making zero effort to do anything with their fox catalog, how is anyone supposed to love it on their streaming platform when they are omitting a revenue stream because they are too cheap or lazy to print up new disc or spend the money to make 4K restorations versions of culturally significant and beloved movies from the past 50 -100 years. Of course people stop buying stuff they bought one of the world biggest film companies of the past 100 years and are choosing to keep,it out of print and off the shelf and intentionally shrinking the physical media market. I had been slowly adding CC versions of Terence Malick films slowly and Days of Heaven was going to be next when BAM out of print it went. Eventually I broke down and paid quite a lot for one. While Toho in Japan may be slowly releasing Blu Rays still, I don't expect any US distributor to pick them up any time soon. That being said there is alot of stuff on blu ray and blu ray is my primary collection so I'd like to have blu ray of whatever I buy. If theres something I really want on blu ray and it's not its only a matter of time weither it gets put out on blu ray or I just cave in and buy the dvd if I just want it right away. Theres 10s of thousands of movies on tons of different formats so theres gonna be a chance to find what you're looking for (it being on your preferred format is a different argument) the secondary market from thrift stores, pawn shops garage sales, online like Ebay. the opportunity it have access to physical media isnt going anywhere anytime soon, depending on what you want it may take a while to find or a lot of money so unless there's a movies buring event we'll have access to tons and tons of second hand movies even if newer physical media slows down in production. It also baffles me how much people just throw away I mean even if you can get money for it at least donate it to a thrift shop, but then of course if it sits on the shelf to long thrift stores will recycle it. I think the amount of physical media that's been produced in the last 30 to 40 years itll be another century before we really see a massive decline in physical media availability as hardcore collectors will keep their collections till they die and install that same mentality onto their children though I think hardcore collectors are the exception and the majority of media viewers are very casual. Things will be bought, held onto, resold or discarded we just hope future generations have the same value to preserve it as we did and I dont think there will be a lack of that cause preserving history is entrenched in American values.

Then one day last year they rereleased it on bluray (not criterion) and I got it for $20. Days of Heaven is pretty obscure so you never know what will be released again.

Hope that movie is included in the kino/paramount deal.

Go to Barnes and Noble, a brick and mortar one, you can probably find a Criterion copy for MSRP. I always find OOP stuff there.
