It’s official. Downsizing is a thing. So IKEA built a complete home in its studio to explore what it takes for a family of four to live comfortably in just 30 square metres. Watch the first episode of this four-part series on living small to find out exactly why multifunctionality really does matter.

Instead of that hard bulky laundry basket, use a big blue Ikea shopping bag. It holds a ton more than that hard basket, has better handles and folds down to almost nothing. The big blue bag is also great for storing pillows and blankets on shelves. Thank you Ikea for making such livable solutions.

The blue bag would never be empty so would never be folded up! However a large supermarket shopping bag is great for taking the wet laundry to be hung in the garden to dry & once dry brought back in. That can be folded up when not in use.

I can't imagine 30m2 being a comfortable long-term solution for a family of 4. Maybe 40m2 if you give each family member a small enclosed space for privacy, but anything smaller seems unrealistic.

I feel like this wouldn't work for older kids, IE Tweens/Teens. For... reasons.

Seriously if I was a kid I'd be fine living in there with my family but now that I'm older, I'm really glad I have my own room.

I think the opposite, this doesn't work for the adults/older generation. They like to come home and do their things immediately instead of transforming their home every fuckin time they want to read or watch a movie or go to sleep.

There are nice ideas, but I have to admit: I would have a hard time breathing. My living room is 30 qm big. And I really like it.

I wish they had an ikea here in Nevada, I'd love to do a lot of these things for my house (840 sqft) my wife has a larger than life perspective so its hard for her to envision space saving ideas without overcomplicating things.

Still too much clutter for small size unit. If IKEA can reduce some accesories, it will be better and spacious.

What does it take to live comfortably for a family of 4 in a 30 square meter home? Extremely high ceilings... Unfortunately most apartments don't have 4m high ceilings.

besides the master's bed on the 1.5 floor. It's all practical in Hong Kong where space is so limited. Great video

The edge of the sofa is higher than the matress, it probably is uncomfortable. Other than that, it looks really nice.

I think it may simply be a table with some hinges and some blackboard paint on the underside.

I know a lot of people love this kind of stuff, but for a family who is used to using or doing certain things for 20 some years it's hard to change. It is fine for a modern family,

Hey! Comments are on, cool! I would like to ask if you have a solution for making that table fold down at a manageable speed (or rather momentum). In my case it's not really a table you see it's a whiteboard that I want to be able to fold up towards the roof then fold down in front of some cabinets.

If you save rent because you have a smaller place, it might be cheaper to live like that. Depends on the average rent. It doesn't make sense if you live in a small village in Meckpomm, but if you live in München, perhaps it does.

It is not appropriate for a civilized family to live in such a small space. Even communists in Eastern Europe knew that 60m² for a family of 5 is the minimum. 30 m² is a place for 1 or 2 people, if there are children, you have to think not how to squeeze more people into a small space, but how to earn rent in a larger apartment. This apartment is child abuse.
