Actually the Kickstarter for the testing Lab is ACtive Now, and 30% funded already.! www.kickstarter.com/projects/slant3d/3d-printing-and-filament-testing-lab?ref=user_menu

I have considered backing the Kickstarter, but am hesitant due to the specific language chosen on the rewards. $20 for 20 videos isn't too bad, on the surface, for investing in your vision on testing filaments; however, the majority of these may be filaments I don't use so would gain little insight from. What benefit do supporters that funded the equipment get after 20 videos? Since you've mentioned another channel for the testing/analysis, would you start to require payment for the engineering tests results, or would this remain free for everyone (no paywall)?

I had a dream once about a spool of filament that was made of filament, and as the spool finished, it started disassembling the spool itself like a sweater with a loose thread being pulled, until it was 100% consumed. I was so excited I told my wife who couldn’t care less, but now tells everyone I dream of filament 😂

Thank you for mentioning libraries and persistence! I'm a librarian. I worked for 8 years in a court library. And most of the time, when I found an answer after the client couldn't do it themselves, it was much less because I knew where or how to look and much more because I just *kept looking*. Intelligence helped - especially when evaluating if an answer *should* exist - but the main factor was sheer stubborness, and this is a common trait in librarians.

I interview a ton of devs for senior level positions. I am in complete agreement with your email suggestions. This advice should also be applied to resumes. Btw I'm still working through the clear pla I purchased as part of the first batch. I am very happy with the quality. It's some of the best printing and most consistent filament I've purchased!

There seems to be some confusion here. The Bambu Lab A1 isn't their large format printer. It's the exact same build volume as their main core XY printers, but a few hundred dollars cheaper because it's a bed slinger, despite the Bambu Labs early marketing claim of, "No more bed slingers." I'm not a Bambu fan because I don't like their proprietary machines built on open source and their All Your Designs Are Belong To Us licensing agreement.
@dropbear9785
@dropbear9785 8 месяцев назад
What they said ...except for the last sentence anyway. Proprietary is okay if it drives innovation, imho. Consumer 3d printers were very stagnant until Bambu Labs shook it up, imho.
@Havok412
@Havok412 8 месяцев назад
Exactly. We wouldn’t have all these other cheap affordable printers that also perform well out of the box if it wasn’t for Bambu coming entering the field. Really woke up all the other companies and as a result they all are benefiting as well because now they’re all making more money even if Bambu is shooting to take over the market they brought in a bunch of new people into 3d printing who still looked for alternatives and found them because now 3D printers are actually decent and are innovating because now there is true competition.
@Liberty4Ever
@Liberty4Ever 8 месяцев назад
@@Havok412 - It sounds as if you're giving Bambu Lab a lot of credit that should deservedly go to the open source developers of Klipper, which Bambu leveraged to very good advantage. Klipper has driven the new wave of faster 3D printers with better print quality that coincided with Bambu Lab's printers arriving on the market.
@Havok412
@Havok412 8 месяцев назад
@@Liberty4Ever No you're defintily right on that. It's not like Bambu created the first fast speed 3D printer. That credit goes to Klipper and the community. But, that was also much before Bambu even came to market which was only for those who knew how and were willing to tinker. The credit I'm giving Bambu is for actually bringing a product to the regular consumers that already had that straight out of the box and didn't cost $8k+. That is what actually got all these other companies to step up. There wasn't a 3D printer that came with Klipper before Bambu. You could say Crealitys sonic pad might've been planned before that but that still came after the X1 was released and Bambu had already shown itself during the Kickstarter before that. And Creality is great at almost instantly releasing a copy of something that has already hit the market. Bambu is the villain of the 3D world with their closed source, security risks, and none upgradable printers but lets be honest all the heroes were getting lazy and fat just sitting around with no one to fight with.
@mikereliford55
@mikereliford55 8 месяцев назад
@@Liberty4EverI would argue that person is not saying that at all. As Slant 3d has mentioned many times open source does not work for commercially viable hardware. Bambu HAD to make a proprietary hardware/software combination to drive the industry forward. Design by committee just doesn’t work. If you keep using all the stuff that exists you will keep getting the same results. It should also be noted that Bambu’s principal contribution to the 3d printing world is not speed, it’s user experience and reliability. I have 12 Bambu machines and 2 Klipper machines. The user experience on the Bambu machines far and away exceeds that of the Klipper based machines to the point they barely get touched.

I've bought 2.25 kg spools of ABS and greatly prefer the larger sizes for everything but evaluating a new filament manufacturer or material. I'm looking forward to 3 kg spool-less reels of filament for lower cost and less waste. I wish there was greater availability (with lower cost) of TPU filament. It prints slower and can have stringing and drooping overhangs but it's a great UV resistant material with excellent interlayer bonding for very strong and very impact resistant parts. People think it's flexible but 95A or greater is easier to print and with a few outer layers and 25% infill it makes very solid and nearly indestructible parts. I use it for most functional parts such as the automotive battery cover I'm making today.

When I studied engineering in the 80s we had to take a technical and business writing class. For business writing, the best advice was from a chief engineering of a local manufacturer, he said if you find yourself writing more than one page to get your point across then you need to rethink your message.

"If everyone else is doing it, it's not a good idea." That explains the housing market VERY well. A TON of people all wanting to buy a house because of FOMO, and it only spikes demand and therefore raises prices. People really need to stop buying overpriced houses which is where high interest rates come in to intentionally put them out of people's price ranges to let things calm down for a while.

If the cost makes it to 10$ USD, which is about 15$ CAD, per kilo, that might actually make it worth shipping to me in Canada. Right now, my go-to is 23$ CAD for 1 kg, and then (if I buy 8kg at a time), about 2$ per kg for shipping, so around 25$ CAD per kg, shipped. Shipping from America to Canada will be more than 2$ CAD per spool - but if the starting point is only 15$? This has potential! Especially if it's spool-less; if that works out to even being *close* to the same cost I'll be happy with it, because dealing with the gorram spools is such a pain in the butt. Still, hopefully this gets big enough that it becomes worth having international distribution and/or generates global price pressure.

A few days ago I came across a video comparing injection molding to 3D printing and why 3D printing can be faster than injection molding even if you just look at the production of the part without the process around it. This manufacturer uses resin printing, so not quite your field of business, but the basic message is the same. 3D printing is going to replace injection molding in some areas sooner or later, and has already done so to some extent.

Regarding AI, it could be helpful to have AI integrated into design and/or slicing software. 3d-printers with AI might be able to self tune, or self diagnose when when something mechanical failing. Somewhat "news" related to 3d printing and scaling up: Relativity Space begin testing their Aeon-R rocket engines to be used on the larger 3d-printed Terran-R rocket. These motors will be 9x more powerful, and the Terran-R will be similar in size to a SpaceX Falcon9. ie: Terran-R will have diameter of 5m vs. 2m for Terran-1 prototype. In case wondering, the "R" stands for "Reusable". First flight is scheduled for 2026.

here's an idea: don't use a spool on your printer at all. don't put the filament on a spool before print. instead, have the external end of the filament gently tied to itself and pull the filament from the inside where the core would be. kind of like those toilet paper dispensers that use special rolls and pull from the center in businesses.
@JazzyJustin
@JazzyJustin 8 месяцев назад
Issue with that is keeping the filament from coming off the sides and tangling itself to hell. Toilet paper isn’t nearly as springy as filament is, and it’s also very flat and wide, keeping it orderly

Interesting AI perspectives, but presumes that your 20,000 IQ secretary has no ambitions and is happy to remain subservient and will happily fulfill your every desire. It matters very little whether you're a 100 IQ boss or a 140 IQ boss. No 20,000 IQ employer is going to work for you. The analysis also assumes that AI will happily coexist with humans or will go live on Mars or something. I think the AI singularity will more closely resemble the Spanish conquistadors wiping out the Mayan civilization that had existed for thousands of years. Like bioweapons research, AI research has the potential to be a species ending event, but unlike viruses, AI has its own intelligence and will be much more difficult to contain. Even if you believe in the hyper-intelligent AI buddy/slave theory (fantasy) and believe it's highly unlikely that AI will be a problem, we'd better be almost 100% certain before risking our species on it. When it happens, it'll happen so quickly that the slow monkeys won't know what happened. There will be no opportunity to fix it, or try again. That's a very high price to pay to have someone writing your python scripts for a couple of years.
