Confession is a place of never ending mercy and forgiveness, and is one of the most beautiful parts of our Catholic faith. But for many, it can also be a very daunting experience, especially if it’s been a long time since your last confession. Whether it’s the first time you’ve gone in a year, or it’s the first time you’ve gone in your life, God is ready and willing to forgive your sins. All we have to do is let him into our hearts.
Today, Fr. Mike explains how to approach going to confession for the first time in a long time.

Even as a person who regularly goes to confession(every 3 weeks), I always write down my sins on a piece of paper. A priest told me that after I leave the confessional, I should rip the paper up, because the wrongdoings on that paper don’t exist anymore. Also, I think it’s fun to rip it up, because it’s like you’re saying to the Devil “Take that, I am free from your grasp!”.
@yestrech
@yestrech 2 года назад
Hi. I went to confession hours ago. I also had a list which btw, ur comment encouraged me to rip them also and not keep the list :), but when I got home, I realized that I forgot a sin or 2. Were those sins that I have forgotten forgiven also?

@@yestrech Thanks be to God! That’s wonderful news! Here’s what I know about that- If you forgot your sins, they are still forgiven! If it puts your mind at ease, you can confess them the next time you go to confession. It’s only an issue if you left something out on purpose. But if you forget a sin or two, you are still forgiven, and you can still confess those the next time you go, if it makes you feel better.

@@celieostroski9723 Thank you so much! I feel guilt and have been stressing over it. Even though I feel this way, I guess this wasn't forgiven. Id also like to ask, is keeping a secret from my parent considered a sin even tho I am at legal age?
@celieostroski9723
@celieostroski9723 2 года назад
@@yestrech I wouldn’t assume so. There’s so many factors that can play into something like that. But from what I can tell you, it most likely is not a mortal sin.

After not going to confession or to Mass voluntarily for over 55 years, my suitcase full of sins was bursting at the sides and one day the clasps broke open and every one of them spilled out. Having watched these videos on confession, I spoke with a staff member of my local parish and it was suggested I speak with Pastor Paul. After a half hour of bearing my soul, Fr. Paul said this has been quite a complete confession, and you may repeat the process at the Sat. Reconciliation time at church or we can do it right now. NOW PLEASE! Having recalled the Act of Contrition, I left his office having received the Sacrament. I did feel guilty afterwards and thought that for sure I have forgotten something serious. But Fr. Paul had reassured me that if I had forgotten something I can confess it next time.. just be sure and do it. After 56 years +/- , having made it back to Church on Pentecost Sunday I hope to receive Communion on Corpus Christi Sunday. Thank you Fr. Mike for your work and prayers.

I’m in the same boat, I haven’t been to confession, my first time since baptism and preparing RCIA for confirmation. I have plenty of time for examination of conscience and so far have 33 line items I wanted to confess and counting. Like most confessors I want it to be perfect but glad to know at least what Fr Schmitz said about forgetting some it’ll be forgiven because of my intentions.

❤️ a few years ago I heard a Mother Angelica talk about confession and she goes every two weeks when she was alive because in her mind she has a hard enough time remembering those past 2 weeks why would she ever want to have to work so hard to remember longer than that 🤣🤣🤣🤣 and she couldn't ever imagine being on her deathbed and having to recall months and years of things she needed to confess at a time that might be super short. EWTN plays all of her recording over the years and it's amazing how relevant they still are today and she just makes me laugh like father Mike Schmidt 👍🤣. Love confession!!!!

Fr. Mike , don’t worry about the commercial for the book. I got it and I needed to have it. I hadn’t been to confession in 50 years . No one knew that I was considering going back to the Catholic Church. I had been away from it well for a long time through marriage and a divorce and losing two other men who meant the world to me in my life and my sister-in-law and I were at dinner this was before Easter it was during lent and she said I’ve got to ask you something I’m just gonna drop it on you and I said OK she goes. Would you like to go to adoration and confession with me? Well, I didn’t know what adoration was so she had to explain that to me well, I knew what confession was, and I knew I hadn’t been there in 50 years. But much to her surprise I said yes I would like to go. She said well I figured I wouldn’t bring it on you on Thursday. I’d ask you a couple days in advance and I said well that’s good cause I’ve got to figure some stuff out, it was the Lenten adoration eight priests, no waiting. Due to the fact that I am disabled, I cannot kneel. show there was a priest 8:43 who was just sitting in a chair and I figured I should just do it. And he was an extremely compassionate man. When I said it had been 50 years he said well I don’t want you to go back through the last 50 years of your life just give me your greatest hits which I did. And he gave me what I considered for 50 years a very gentle penance and we talked and he explain some things to me where my mom was concerned and was a great deal of help. I thought we were finished and he said one more thing I just thought of this have you had communion in 50 years.? And I said yes not knowing that was a no-no, so he took that again relieve me of the sin from that. On the whole, I thought it went really well the second time that I went I knew who the priest was the next someone who I greatly admire, and I was a nervous wreck, and practically cried to the whole thing, and he was very kind. So the last time that I have gone back, I told him I had a list and he kinda Saufley chuckled and I told him everything and once again counseling penance, and it was very very wonderful. And we were all finished and I was walking towards the door and I said you know I should get a little credit for not crying through the whole thing. If he wasn’t sure who it was before he was absolutely positive it was after I have used your book for the last two times that I have gone to confession found out things that I didn’t know found out things that had to be said, but it turns out that it was an incredibly great help to me. so for anyone who is returning to the Catholic Church after being gone a half a century like I was or just a year it is incredibly well written, and incredibly great advice, and I liked that each commandment had a checklist. So you and father Josh did a great job and I thank you very much for it.🙏🙏❤️❤️

@kaitlynlightfoot9591

Hi there! First off, you’re not an awful person. Our theology says that we humans are made good. God loves you so much. He looks at you as if you were the only person to ever exist. In regards to confession, I have a severe anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Confession is very, very hard for me. My priest who has been ordained for 23 years once told me he has ever seen anyone as nervous and scared as I am. I’m still terrified of it, but I try to go every week or two. Here’s my advice: 1. Gain a relationship with a priest who you know him and are comfortable around him. I often hear people say to do anonymous confession if you’re nervous, but I’ve found that even worse. Find a priest (it doesn’t have to be your local parish priest, it can be someone else) who is friendly, kind, caring, and patient. 2. Talk to that priest about your fears before actually going to confession. This will help him gain prescriptive and compassion for your situation. Tell him why you’re scared. Don’t be afraid to tell him the exact reasons. 3. When you begin confession, ask the priest to say a Hail Mary with you. It’s a simple thing, but it has helped me a lot. 4. Ask Mary to come to confession with you. She’s your loving mother and she wants to share that experience with you. She wants to help you, but you have to let her. 5. I learned this from the book Fr. Mike talked about in this video, which I highly recommend getting a copy of. In Luke 22:43, an angel ministered to Jesus while on the cross. An ancient tradition says that during His passion, that angel showed Jesus your action of going to confession, and that strengthened Him. He knew that 2000 years later, one of His children would need the grace from His moment of agony. This strengthened Him. Know that every time you go to confession, in some mysterious way, you are strengthening Jesus and giving Him courage. Don’t be afraid to let Him give you the grace you need. You are not a disappointment to Him. If you need anything, don’t be afraid to let me know. God bless you, my dear sibling. I’d also recommend reflecting on the parable of the Prodigal Son. That is how God looks at us in confession.

Hey friend! God desires so much to welcome you into His merciful embrace - and even the most embarrassing things the priest has definitely heard before! Just before Easter I decided to go to confession for the first time in about 10/12 years. I had been plucking up my courage for months beforehand. Eventually it was my turn to go to the priest He is a lovely man who was so kind to me. I told him I hadn't been for ages and he just said that I must not worry and God already knows what I had to say and has already forgiven my sins. After that it was easy to just talk to the priest. He said that we will just chat and that's what happened. It took maybe 8 or 10 minutes. (I could have stayed and chatted longer!😄). I'm sure your priest will be just as kind to you. God Bless!!

Those who are born in the Spirit ( John- 3:5 ) are sensitive to grieving His Spirit. God lives in us! (Romans -8:11--)We therefore will find a quiet place and repent of our sin. Though the sanctification of the Holy Spirit ( Romans- 15:16 ) work in our lives He will forgive our sin (1 John 1:9) As Christians we are responsible for responding to the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ wants to know us personally. He wants a relationship with Him. (John 10:14-16) There is power in the Word of God. Peace - Keep on Keeping on!!!

Fr. aren't we forgiven of all the sins when we are baptized during the easter vigil? I was told we don't have to remember and confess all the sins which I have done before my day of baptism, I think we receive the sanctifying grace on the day of baptism , kindly clarify?

Congratulations. Go talk to your parish priest. I think you might be mixing a few things up. All of your sins were forgiven up to your baptism. Sins committed after that are new sins. Do an examination of conscience every night, repent to God beg for his mercy, then go to confession so you receive the Eucharist again

The ancient Christians always had the practice of going to confession with a priest. If you examine the Church Fathers, you’ll find that the earliest Christians were Catholics, and that the Sacrament of Confession was practiced! I was once where you are, but upon reading Scripture and the writings of the earliest Christians, I found the One True Church established by Jesus Christ, and I’m so happy! Ask me anything if you like, I’ll say a prayer for you!

Father, I haven't been to confession for so long that I seriously can't remember what I'm supposed to do? Am I supposed to kneel (that's how I was taught in grade school) or sit (because sometimes there is a chair beside the priest). Who starts the confessional conversation? Do I just go in and start blurting my sins or is there a preamble prayer I'm supposed to say? Am I supposed to say an 'act of contrition' (I don't remember one but I could look one up online)? How many sins should I recite (I've broken all the commandments way too many times to count - if not materially then certainly spiritually)? I'm guessing there is something I'm supposed to say at the end as well but I don't know what?
@MissPopuri
@MissPopuri 3 года назад
It depends on the confessional really. Some have chairs and others have kneelers. Some have screens to protect the priest from the sinner; others are more conversational. Historically, women were better protected from the priest behind the screen of a confessional because there was a history of priests desiring to comfort the women distressed by sexual sins. With rampant abuses like homosexuality, I would think that men would feel safer behind the screen as well for fear the priest might be a predator. As for the acts of contrition, they typically have one posted by the penitent’s kneeler so you don’t have to lug a heavy book into the confessional. Writing out your own act of contrition may be an option as well and saying it when you complete the confession if none of the words quite work before absolution. We try to make some grand confession, but the trick is doing it more than trying or going through the motions. Breathe and greet the priest with a thank you for seeing you. I’ve even gone so far as to incorporate “My prayers are with you, Father” or something like that at the end when I leave the confessional. It’s almost a love letter when you think about it.
@mariaellasm
@mariaellasm 3 года назад
@ Y B Nearly all the confessionals I've been to have both a chair in a corner as well as a kneeler in front of a screen. You are free to choose whichever when you walk in. Sometimes the priest will start by saying "Welcome" or if he doesn't, as soon as you kneel/sit you say "Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It is has been __________ (weeks/month/years) since my last confession. These are my sins: ...." Then, When you are done, say "For these and all my sins, I am deeply sorry." Then the priest takes over, gives you a penance, tells you to say the Act of Contrition (you can read it from your cell or paper), then he absolves you. Remember, like Fr. Mike said in the video, you can write down your sins on a piece of paper or on your cell phone if that works better for you.
@yb5515
@yb5515 3 года назад
@@mariaellasm Thank you, very helpful but "write down my sins"? Even if I could remember one tenth of them (which I can't) I could write many book volumes (no really - if I started counting back 30 years all the times I disrespected my parents or all the times I told little white lies or wasn't totally honest or all the times I wished harm on someone there would be encyclopedia volumes of sins to go through). What about speeding or running red lights, are those sins? Where would I start; chronologically, or big sins first or maybe start at the first commandment? Honestly, if I listed ALL my sins, I'm sure either me or the priest would die of old age before I was finished.
@jendoe9436
@jendoe9436 3 года назад
If you tell the priest upfront you’re not sure what to do, he’ll usually help guide you during the Confession. My priest tends to want to dive in right away, so normally he’ll ask me how long it’s been since my last Confession and go from there. Other priests I go to usually do a small welcome (as it is a joyous occasion when a sinner confesses) and ask me to lead with an Act of Contrition. From there, admit your sins as best you can. If you get stuck, hopefully the priest will help you gather your thoughts until you feel you’ve confessed everything. Depending how it goes, the priest may ask you to say a small prayer with him, give you something (such as a prayer card or bible text), penance, and then conclude with the absolution. It’s nerve wracking and confessing sins will probably make you shake, sweat, and fumble for words, but the peace at the end is such a relief for the soul.

@lukebrasting5108 3 года назад
@@yb5515 You don't have to list every single individual sin, just the type and amount of times you committed it. If you can't remember the exact number then just give a general figure like more than ten times or more than a hundred. Fr. Schmitz, does one have to be confirmed in order to go to confession? I’m baptized & I’ve had my communion as a child but I’ve never been confirmed as of yet & now I’m a full adult. As a teen I remember I was in the hospital for a while due to illness & on a Sunday a priest was making his rounds & he came to me and A:Asked me if I was catholic & B: If I was confirmed. Answer to A: was “yes” and to B: “No” so he informed me he was unable to hear my confession. But I’m wondering still if the sacrament of confirmation is nessarcary in order to go to confession. Please advise. Thank you & God bless. Anthony

He doesn’t say it in the video, but I would ask a priest about confessing sins from before baptism. I’m pretty sure the Catechism would say that you don’t confess something from before baptism because it was washed away like original sin. Our proclivities after our baptism should be what you examine. It should be easier for people who convert from a faith that has a believer’s baptism over the infant one. My own confession starts at the end of Fifth Grade if there was something that plagues me from back then needing to be rectified and given back to God, I should do it. I’ve been feeling quite scrupulous myself lately so I might need to go over some of the years to see what I remember myself.

Colossians 1 About Jesus: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. 1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not burdensome. Rev 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS…. 1- THOU SHALT HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME 2- THOU SHALT NOT MAKE UNTO THEE ANY GRAVEN IMAGE 3- THOU SHALT NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THY GOD IN VAIN 4- REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY 5- HONOUR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER 6- THOU SHALT NOT KILL 7- THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY 8- THOU SHALT NOT STEAL 9- THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAINST THY NEIGHBOURS 10- THOU SHALT NOT COVET Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Hebrews10:26-31- For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God!!.. These few verses unmask deception and reveal idolatry: Jeremiah 7:18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke Me to anger. The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the works of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them become like them. SO DO ALL WHO TRUST IN THEM. Psalm 135:15-18 Deuteronomy 4:16 that you do not act corruptly and make an idol for yourselves of any form or shape, whether in the likeness of a male or female, Jeremiah 7:18-19 KJV The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the ¨queen of heaven¨, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger. Do they provoke me to anger? saith the LORD: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces? Mary and saint worship, Mary the mediatrix and queen of heaven? God cleary told us Jesus is the ONLY mediator between God and mankind. Whoever else you use as mediator or pray to is IDOLATRY. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus. Saints dont intermediate and dont listen to prayers, they are dead people like you and me, made of flesh and they died, Mary also is one of them, she was a normal woman who gave birth to Jesus and she and other people may not be worshipped. God declared the dead as the following: Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 For the living know they will die; but the dead do not know anything, nor have they any longer a reward, for their memory is forgotten. 6Indeed their love, their hate and their zeal have already perished, and they will no longer have a share in all that is done under the sun. If the dead are alive somewhere... then who are the ones Christ will resurrect at his arrival? *Second commandment (Ex 20:4): Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, ...* this includes rosary necklaces, Mary and saint statues, Jesus, Mary and saint images, crosses, 'holy relics' and many more items used in worship by most denominations. People bow down before these things, kiss them, pray with them and that is wrong. Christ is the mediator we pray towards, close the door and pray to him honestly without any items or images, he is the living God and does not share his glory with manmade things. It is time to return to the old Hebraic faith of Jesus (Yeshua) and do what he did (obey the Fathers commandments and laws). There was no Catholic church or hundreds of denominations each with their own views and opinions back in the days of Jesus and the prophets. Believers had the old testament back then, which is the foundation of all scripture and the key to understand the new testament. Most Cathechism practices like rosary prayers etc are just invented in the 16th century.. first pope existed in 538ad and not in the apostles their days. those things got nothing to do with Jesus, its the traditions and vanities of religious men who went far astray from the Fathers commands.

But the problem is I can't go to confession because I can't speak anymore. They took my larynx and I have no voice box now. Does this exclude me from confession and communion? I hope not 😢 please tell me how I can confess. Thanks Father and I'm enjoying the Bible in a year and catechism in a year. I bought the great adventure Bible and ascension edition of catechism. Fr. Mike, do you have any advice for someone who may suffer from anxiety and scrupulosity that makes confession very difficult?

In the moment the Lord guides you on your wording and even the priest guides u throughout it i strugglr with anxiety but just as scripture states , cast your anxiety on the Lord

I haven't been to confession since the pandemic started (glad I went just a week before all churches closed) and I am planning to go to confession next month when they open confession again. This video is what I need! Thank you Fr. Mike.

POPE BENEDICT XVI: “Christ is not so much interested in how often in your lives you stumble and fall, as in how often you pick yourselves up again. He does not demand glittering achievements, but he wants his light to shine in you. He does not call you because you are good and perfect, but because he is good, and he wants to make you his friends. Yes, you are the light of the world because Jesus is your light. You are Christians - not because you do special and extraordinary things, but because Christ is in your life. You are holy because his grace is a work in you.”

Is it okay to go to another church for confession? Like if I'm very close to my priest and I don't want to confess to him can I go to a church down the road that I don't attend so I can confess?
