Ah I also started playing KSP just now and I tried orbital rendezvous after doing Minmus, The Mun and a probe to Eve. I tried it around Minmus and it isn´t as hard as it looks like. And I can tell that the ´Lowne lazy method of docking´ is a very good choice for beginners. I think he also made a tutorial named ´Getting better at docking with Minmus´ or you can watch some other videos where he does orbital rendezvous and try it yourself with the video and you will get into it. For those of you that are following this two years later, mind the distance that kerbin is from duna when you arrive at duna. I went to separate the lander from the mothership and couldn't create a maneuver node. I thought I forgot the antenna. Only when I put jeb in the lander and I couldn't create a maneuver node with the mothership did the light bulb go off and I opened the map screen and noticed kerbin was almost 80 degrees ahead of duna. I put the kerbals to "bed" and timewarped to test to see if distance was the issue. It was. As soon as kerbin came around the sun and started getting closer to Duna, my connection to the KSC returned and I was able to go about the mission, haven't completed it yet, but yeah. Time to break from this series and go build a Comm Sat Network somewhere.

11:40 They're actually incorrect when they say 70 km maximizes the Oberth effect anyway. The ideal altitude for a Duna transfer (the gateway orbit) is 7.78 Mm. DV from there to Duna is only 650 m/sec, whereas it's 1,080 m/sec from 70 km. The cost of going to a higher Kerbin orbit is partially offset by the reduced DV to Duna. Starting from 80km instead of 70km only costs an additional 11 m/sec. 90 km costs 21 m/sec. 100 km costs 32 m/sec. That's chump change; easily worth it for the safety factor. Plus, cosine losses are reduced for weak engines. *TL/DR: Do what Matt Lowne said. *

Great video matey! I like the addition of the mission progress bar at the bottom. Protip: There's no need to add fuel lines for the strap-on boosters if you 'Enable Crossfeed' on the radial decouplers. Your main engine/s will usually be guzzling fuel faster than the booster engines, so the booster tanks should empty first. Unless you're the kind of player who feels that using tweakables like crossfeed or autostrut is "cheating", in which case you can use external fuel lines.

An amazing tutorial! However, not very amazing KSP skills from me.... Had an amazing first half of the mission, landed in the perfect spot and got a flag. But i ended up using my nuclear engines for getting into LKO, i think my gravity turn must have been off, because i barely got to orbit with as little fuel as you did. And so of course, i did a terrible job docking and had barely any fuel. ended up using infinite fuel for the rest of the video. I also ended up accidentally bringing 4 Kerbals, but everybody survived re-entry somehow. The one thing i can say is, there is a reason the first mun landing I did didn't have a separate lander! Oh and by the way, I think a good tutorial would be like "Ways to save fuel in KSP" or "How to fly more efficiently in KSP"

A very nice video (and mission) Matt, I have about 200 hours in ksp now, and except from a couple of one-way probes have only been to the mun and min, so this is going to be quite helpful. :-) As for docking, I generally can do it, but I always struggle with the RCS control keys, they just don't feel natural to me. Personally I think I would find it much easier if activating RCS would disable the regular engines and free up the wasd+qe and shift/ctrl for the control, I'm probably just weird :-) But, you can do this without actually docking in Duna orbit. "just" get the lander within 150 m or so, have Bob eva, grab the science and then rcs-fly him (now with wasd controls) to the mothership and head home. If you stuck a cheap probe-core on the lander you could then deorbit it as well, only loosing a bit of left-over fuel. Question: Why do so few people seem to use the Experiment Storage Unit? It took a while for me as well, but the ability to just right-click and collect all science from the experiments on a vessel is so nice, yes you still need to eva to reset the goo and material bay, but if placed properly you can reach them without letting go from the hatch. As for next target, Jool or Eeloo could be nice as those targets would also give a reason for you to show/explain a bit about antenna range...
@givenfool6169

Hey, pro tip. You actually can use WASD shift/ctrl to use rcs thrusters. Just hit the docking mode button over where it has staging in the bottom left hand of the screen and it switches your control scheme.

@TheWeeaboo Yeah, and doing it on the surface is even harder. I mean, when you have to transport Kerbals to a planetary base, you need to take extreme care not to mess it up. I recently sent a rescue mission to rescue Val from Duna, but my rescue craft landed 180 km away from Val with no fuel left. Go figure.

I always have the experiment storage on the craft with a small decoupler and a chute. That way if I do forget chutes on the main pod, I can just decouple the storage and all my science data falls safely back to the ground and I don't have to try and collect all the stuff manually before reentry. I can just focus on getting the Kerbals on the ground.

Had a pair of curious coincidences with this video today. KSP crashed in the middle of a test flight of a ship which wasn't meant to come back to Kerbin. I used its high drag and what little TWR it had to slow down, then bailed out when the altitude started to get a bit low. Fussing with the same ship's launcher, I couldn't seem to get the 2nd stage to have the right TWR; 1 Vector was not enough, 2 were too much. (I only play sandbox.) While watching this, I saw the Mainsail, looked up engines in the wiki, and made myself a note to fit the Mainsail just before Matt started talking about it.

Funnily enough, I finished a Duna mission a few days ago, in a similar rendez-vous setup. I also forgot parachutes on the main capsule. Thankfully, I had a lot of fuel and an engineer, so I just repacked my lander parachutes, docked the lander to the ship, and brought the whole stack back

Just recreated this nearly exactly in ksp 2! Apart from some science modules and rotations, and size of stuff like science junior, its all pretty much recreated, apart from the fact that all the modules burnt up in the duna atmosphere and I crashed into the ground at 2km/s (the engine is too weak to slow you down from orbit without aerobraking 100 times)

You don't need actual fuel lines. You can use fuel flow priority. With the added benefit that your spent boosters keep generating thrust until you want to stage them. Meaning that if you're a few seconds late, you get a nice TWR increase to compensate for your mass ratio decrease. Decouplers on radial boosters should pretty much always have crossfeed enabled with priority settings on the tanks if you want to optimize performance.

This tutorial is how I landed on Duna the first time. 50 days getting there, few days there, 50 days back. Enabled infinite propellant because I didn’t have enough Delta V for the return. Second run, 100 getting there, 100 days orbiting while waiting for a transfer window because I didn’t have enough Delta V to gun it, 70 days back. I think my problem was the burn I was doing to get a Duna encounter, was also getting a nice equatorial orbit around Duna which I believe used more Delta V than required, so next time I think I’ll do the correction burns to get a nice periapsis while I’m in interplanetary space instead of around Kerbin’s gravity.

Good video, but you forgot one thing about docking, since it is for beginners. It's in that part where you were explaining how to double click on docking port and using a "target node. Their pilots won't be probably able to execute such maneuver (it requires level 3 or 4 pilot), so it requires an advanced autopilot module or (in my opinion best choice for begginers with lower level tech tree stuff) at least fly by wire module. Just keep in mind, that fly by wire IS NOT an command unit, it just enhance them. It still requires autopilot unit or real pilot with command pod.

i can say from experience... trial and error works the best on how to figure out how ksp works, try untill you find your way and only then look at how others deal with the problem then youll always have a plan b if the borrowed way wouldnt work for you

I've sent probes and orbital scanners to Duna and next I'm working on sending Kerbals. But I feel that sending them to another planet locked in a capsule for the duration would be mistreatment. So working on building a small station that will include a landing craft that I would like to be useable. Figure if I go that distance I'd want to explore more a few spots. I may have made my mission too complicated. So it's nice to see your video as a reminder that it's okay to go the simple route the first time.

It's funny. I have recently been doing missions where I try to launch to and return from Duna by the earliest ingame date possible, so I always put my plane change/tweaking node at Kerbol Periapsis. But of course instead of being inside Moho's orbit like a kerbinday 1-to-kerbinday 170 transfer, the Periapsis is at launch, which means you can't do it that way.
