In Nigeria, couples do an average of 3 marriage ceremonies- the traditional which is usually the first and very compulsory in most ethnic groups bcos it involves payment of bride price and other traditional rites; 2nd is religious or church/muslim wedding- which is not compulsory though many love to do it. Final one is court/registry wedding, also not compulsory tho it's sometimes necessary for official documents for visas or other stuff The first marriage is the most recognised one according to our laws and traditions of the country. Where I come from in Delta state, if a couple does not perform the traditional marriage, that marriage is not recognised by the family or community
