I did snag up a lot of food and "Pogey Bait" for my guys in REFORGER 88 in Germany hosted by the 1st Cavalry. I snagged up T-Rats from Pound Cake, Turkey Dinners, Beef Stew, etc. I also managed to get sleeping bags and other TA-50 items. My platoon appreciated it. My LT and Platoon Sergeant saw me as "Crap Shoot" from Kelley's Heroes who was a scavenger of stuff. My platoon chain of command would make "Requests" of items to pass Brigade and Battalion Inspections by contacting and making deals with sources from other Infantry, Armor, or Engineer units in the Brigade or Division. Trade, borrow, or steal and bring it back if possible with vehicle parts or POL. Never with actual weapons but for weapons parts to complete a lay out for inspection. I only did this so my platoon and company would pass inspections and not get fucked over and get punished. I did get a couple of AAMs for my task as to prove efficiency. My chain of command knew me as a scavenger and sometimes a thief for doing such "Requests". My C.O. , XO, Supply Sergeant, and Platoon would ask me if I can make it happen? The Army forces me to think on how I can get over this inspection and not get fucked up. If I fail in my mission the company could get fucked up and everybody has to pay for fucking up. Very bad for my situation. I had to plan out for every raid if it involves "Borrowing Equipment" from other units. It involves every part of my Infantry training to pull shit off like this. That is why the 5 paragraph operations orders, rehearsals, and executions had to be precise in order not to get caught or be detected. The US Army makes you think of evil shit that your are trained to do with single minded ruthlessness. No Bullshit either.

I was in Germany from 56-58 and we had many alerts. Some only lasted for one day while the longest was 17. We had 3 separate areas where we were dugin and everything went below grade and was covered. I spent many a night sleeping in a ma-duce position sleeping on fresh cut grass. The only problem that I recall was when it rained and chow turned to soup and flooded the mess kit. What was really funny was that the local German girls all knew on what day was the alert scheduled. I dont recall anyone really complaining and we even had beer delivery at night but I wont say how that was accomplished.

ADVON was usually the ones who set up. As a 42A and 88M with my latest enlistment I worked a lot. Was not in the TOC as 42 as a female and tpu deploy you're usually needed to do female searches if doing a TCP downrange. Three deployments and I think I worked in the R5 section for six months than I was a TC or Driver. FTX sucks a** but nothing sucks more than NTC. Thank you for your service BTW. My embrace the suck experience was at YTC and the BN did not get proper permission to be in a certain area and we dug holes and set everything up and my BN was fined by the EPA for destruction of protected plants.

We traded cigarettes for most everything. My 4 friends, except one, did not smoke. I found that we could get an extra ration by applying for a special excess smoker card. I think we got 12 cartons each month and paid $.90 for each. Even got through the border to Luxemburg and stayed at a nice hotel just trading for both the room and meals. Where were you stationed, I was at Kaiserslautern.

Germany in the 80s was a field problem, at Ft. Carson it was "Going Down Range". Funny how those two phrases come up. The guys from Korea who came from 2nd ID it means going downtown. Stateside and Germany guys "Field Problem" means training out in the field. Units like the 82nd Airborne and other Airborne units to include Light Infantry call it an FTX (Field Training Exercises). After 9/11/2001 from Afghanistan to Iraq and numerous deployment. Being "Down Range" means going or being in combat. I first heard of it when I got to Iraq in 2006-08 and after. Just funny how those terms and what to become meanings after 2008. I used to laugh silently at guys overhearing them at the food court at Ft. Lewis and Ft. Irwin who were veterans of Iraq and the Stan. Like "Yeah! If you go "Down Range"! LOL!!. It was a different meaning back in my day in the 80s. Going to the field or FTX is more appropriate. Right now. I don't care but relive the memories I had back in the day as a veteran... Great topic. Brought back many memories. LOL!!!
