I'm late to the party, but on that note about washing the guitars out with reverb: Gojira actually used to stack a ridiculous amount of guitar tracks on their records. I remember reading Joe saying that they had like 18 guitars playing the same riff on "Backbone." So that reverb sound you're hearing is just the small human differences in each track creating all of that space!

About the growling, it is a spin off to what is known as belting in opera. So they are actually singing, thats how they manage to avoid damaging their vocal cords. But it requires a lot of control because you can damage your cords if you mess up. The fact these guys can tour for months and play full sets without a damaged voice is testament to their singing ability.

Aww hell yeah, another one of my fave bands! Everyone is excited for the new album dropping at the end of this month. Amazonia is a new single off of it, and everyone's reactions are getting blocked. My guess is because proceeds from the song go to a thoughtfully-researched charity working to preserve the Amazon forest's nature and indigenous people. So they are trying to funnel all views to their channel for that. Could also be because, as you said, the project hasn't been released yet. There's more info about their charity thing in the official vid as well as a separate vid just about the effort and on their site. Great tune.

A cool little info on something you said around 18:00, about the vocal chords not being totally ruined hahaha As a vocalist myself, there's no way you get such a complex distortion (like the ones you've been reacting to) being tense. If the muscles of your jaw, your tongue and pretty much all your vocal complex are tense, there'll be no space for resonance, and therefore, no harmonics and the spectrum of your voice will sound flat and maybe even a little muddy... and also, you use the note you're doing as a backbone for the distortion you're using on top of that to bring a little bit of brightness and sparkles (lol) to the sound. I mention that because, without that note, or any other "backbone" you're unprotected and then you'll surely be hoarse. but basically, relaxation and effortlessly singing is key to endure a 2h concert. which is funny, this looks nothing but rage and power and aggressiveness . AWRIGHT

Please do Art Of Dying or Explosia for your next Gojira reaction. They both have really amazing breakdowns.

Oh man you're gonna get your mind blown when you get around to The Art of Dying by Gojira :) Hoping you can get around to Dark Tranquillity - Iridium, it's going to open up many doors for you, and of course goosebumps hehe They're one of the pioneers of the Gothenburg sound, a thing that practically created a genre. Absolutely gotta get around to it if you liked Arch Enemy. I know I'm asking for months but hey you encouraged us to be persistent :D

This album has such a unique sound, I think that's mainly because of that reverb on the guitar and drums. When I first heard this song, I remember it, it blew my mind. Especially that breakdown near the end, never heard anything like it. Sounds like freakin Flying Whales!

One of the tightest, nastiest live bands you’ll ever witness. I always feel bad for bands that follow them because they destroy everything in their path.

It's about time for another Between the Buried and Me track. “Extremophile Elite” is incredible, probably the most diverse song I've ever heard and it has a fantastic video of them in the studio.

The whole album From Mars to Sirius has such a massive sound. Also, Joe has an almost multi-tonal voice when he does his screaming. I don't know if it's a combination of his natural voice and vocal fry or if he's possessed by an environmentally conscious deity, but it's cool as hell to listen to live or in studio.

That “peoples elbow” riff must be one of the coolest riffs ever. If you don’t automatically involuntarily headbang, you have no heart.

The drummer is a beast. I love how he plays around the main groove of the guitar riff versus the guitars trying to match what the drummer is doing.

If I remember correctly, Gojira quad-tracks their guitars, which definitely adds into the really thick tone that they have on record.

Speaking about female growlers, you have to get into some in this moment. And I would say start off with daddy’s falling angel. There’s no one better than Maria Brink.

Here's a complete transcription of the whale song at the beginning: "Ah … ! What’s happening? Er, excuse me, who am I? Hello? Why am I here? What’s my purpose in life? What do I mean by who am I? Calm down, get a grip now … oh! this is an interesting sensation, what is it? It’s a sort of … yawning, tingling sensation in my … my … well I suppose I’d better start finding names for things if I want to make any headway in what for the sake of what I shall call an argument I shall call the world, so let’s call it my stomach. Good. Ooooh, it’s getting quite strong. And hey, what’s about this whistling roaring sound going past what I’m suddenly going to call my head? Perhaps I can call that … wind! Is that a good name? It’ll do … perhaps I can find a better name for it later when I’ve found out what it’s for. It must be something very important because there certainly seems to be a hell of a lot of it. Hey! What’s this thing? This … let’s call it a tail - yeah, tail. Hey! I can can really thrash it about pretty good can’t I? Wow! Wow! That feels great! Doesn’t seem to achieve very much but I’ll probably find out what it’s for later on. Now - have I built up any coherent picture of things yet? No. Never mind, hey, this is really exciting, so much to find out about, so much to look forward to, I’m quite dizzy with anticipation … Or is it the wind? There really is a lot of that now isn’t it? And wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

Cool reaction, there are so many Gojira songs to recommend, really looking forward for the new album at the end of the month. Any chance you could do some "Death" - Crystal Mountain / Symbolic / Lack of Comprehension ... amazing band with some brilliant musicians in it .. the creators of Technical/Progrssive Death Metal. Cheers

My First ever recommendation for you, and one that I really really hope that you find. The Band is Yob, song is marrow. An absolute masterpiece and I mean that. The fluidity and continuity of the writing, the amount of love and time put into their unique tones, The huge chord voices and melodies. Admittedly it is a long song but it is worth every second of the journey. I truly hope you are able to sit down with this absolutely beautiful piece of music. You might even cry halfway through ;-) Cheers Brother And Mahalo
