The first gold discovery in Queensland is recorded as having occurred at Canoona in 1858.
Now nobody at the time could know whether this would be the next big Gold Rush and that fact led 15,000 diggers to scramble to the fields.
Due to wild stories of big finds and the time lag before any news at all made it to diggers a thousand miles away, many of these ragged individuals arrived after the alluvial deposits had been exhausted in Canoona.
Other Queensland discoveries followed with a lucky digger unearthing that states largest ever nugget in 1867 from Gympie Creek.
The Queensland nuggets weren’t generally as big as the gold nuggets found in the southern states, although around 15 nuggets exceeding 100 ounces each are recorded as having been found.
By 1868 there were around 10,000 diggers working in the Gympie fields, with the roughly constructed shops stretching for half a mile and surrounded by the rough and ready shacks or sheets of bark thousands of hungry diggers were using for shelter.
These days Gympie is home to around 10,000 people with agriculture, dairying, mining and tourism it’s main activities.
Gympie is in an area listed by UNESCO as a World Conservation site and visitors to the area will find a humid sub-tropical climate with a luxurious, picturesque landscape.
A visit to Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum would be of great interest to prospectors, and there are plenty of accommodation options available to travellers in the region.
Check out Gympie in any of the Doug Stone series of wonderful books on Gold Mining in Australia, as these provide a great resource and plenty of food for thought for prospectors, eager to explore areas known for having produced gold in sizeable quantities over the years.
