Ron listens very patiently while I go on a long monologue describing the relationship between the treasures in Hembrillo basin (Victorio Peak) and in the Caballo mountains. Pictures of "eyes" in the Caballos and on the way to Hembrillo are shown, as well as the Bloody Hands site. I dug up the Pope Pious quote from 1797 about the Seven Cities of Gold and that is included as a scroll (since I forgot the exact quote - duh). Finally we discuss a surprise artifact find that we stumbled across when we got to tour the basin.

Thanks for sharing. As a kid my uncle would share stories he heard about Hembrillo basin. Whatever gold was there is probably gone after the land was annexed by federal government. I still think there are some hidden caches in Caballo, though.

Love the New Mexico treasure hunting lore. I just did a video on the story of Padre LaRue which relates to this story. Thank you for sharing.

Yeah, it's fascinating stuff, and we can still go outdoors in NM and experience the terrain... for now.

I hope the military did not detonate the atomic bomb there in the past. Where have all the trees gone?! If you stay there for the night, you will not find any wood to warm yourself by the fire.

The Trinity site is about 100 miles to the Northeast of this spot. That's where the first publicly-disclosed nuke was detonated. Read the Gold House books and you will find a section where Doc Noss and Ova crossed paths coming into and out of the basin, and witnessed the event from afar. This is definitely desert. There is wood to burn, just not big beautiful trees all over in the lowlands like you may be used to (based on your user name). Mesquite and creosote and some desert willows and juniper.

Interesting. That is what I think, too. Not sure what I said to give you the impression. There are gold deposits in every mountain range around the San Andres (and a small amount in the extreme south), but the idea of there being some huge natural vein deep in Vic Peak has always sounded fishy to me because of the surrounding geology - it is not very gold-bearing at all. But, who can say for sure? Only those who have been in the mountain, I suppose, which will never be me.

@@lostadamsgold also I think that it was part of Montezuma's treasure that the Spanish raided, they already had established somewhat of a relationship to the natives so Chief Victorio could have very easily have helped them to hide some on their way towards Sante fe thinking they were coming back and they did alot of shistey stuff and ended not coming back. Well there is alot more but that's the short, short version anyway.

@@stevepeterson4596 Hi Steve. I think that Victorio was not even a twinkle in his great-great-grandpappy's eye when the Aztec may have came north with things to hide. The mixture of treasure reported in the Peak has always perplexed me. I get the sense that the bars were ancient, yet possible Maximillian/Charlotta or older European loot and arms were mentioned, as was a Wells Fargo box!? Part of why the mystery is so compelling, at least to me.
