Gold Leaf 101: How To Gold Leaf A Picture Frame
Crafting with gold leaf is gorgeous and easy! We'll show you how to apply gold leaf adhesive, how to handle the sheets of real gold, how to polish the gold leaf, and how to seal your project. Gold leafing is so fun and you’ll be gold leafing everything!
To get started in gold leafing you will need gold leaf sheets and gold leaf adhesive sizing. Most craft stores sell both the gold leaf and the glue (adhesive sizing). We also recommend getting gold leaf sealer to prevent the gold leafed area from tarnishing.
To apply the gold leaf you will need a small craft paint brush. We will show you how to paint the glue onto the picture frame. Then we will show you how to apply the sheets of real gold leaf to the tacky areas. Gold leaf sticks well to gold leaf adhesive and any pieces that don’t find glue to stick to will brush right off. You can reapply those pieces to tacky areas.
Gold leaf is so easy and it looks like a million bucks. Gold leaf a thrift store picture frame! Gold leaf a vase! Gold leaf a wooden box to hold jewelry. You can gold leaf almost anything.

You did a beautiful job on your frame. You were very calm and clear about the materials and directions. Thank you. I have a gold painted 24”x36” wooden frame. I think it was painted to make it appear aged, but think it looks dull, so I want to try this on it. I hope I can get it looking half as good as yours. Thanks again.

Wow that came out great!, I’m not a crafter but I build guitars, I learned something new here!, can I ask if this can be clear coated with lacquer, or polyurethane, or even acrylic clear spray paint?, does this material loose it’s shine if a clear is applied,and buffed out to a high gloss shine?, thanks for this, the gears are really turning now! New ideas by the minute!😊

Do you recommend painting the wood surface before the leaf is applied? Or will it work on raw wood.

If you paint or seal the wood first, you end up using less of the adhesive because raw wood really absorbs the glue. Hope that helps! J&K

Thanks for the great demonstration, whiich inspires me to regild an old picture frame whose gilding has worn away. What is the thickness of the gold leaf and purity (carats) and where do you get the large sheets shown in your video? The ones I see for sale are 3-1/8 square and are extremely thin.

The Mona Lisa leaf used in this video is not actually gold. It is a "combination" gold or imitation gold comprised of copper and zinc. What tells us that it is imitation gold is the product description that says "Metal Leaf." We also know by the size of the sheets. Imitation gold leaves are always 5.5" by 5.5". Pure, precious gold (18k---24k) is always sold on leaves that are 3-1/8" square. Imitation gold is 0.8 microns thick. Pure gold leaf is 6.6 time thinner, at 0.12 microns. Pure gold leaf is too thin to be handled the way shown in this video, much too thin to be picked up with fingers..

I’m pretty sure what you’re using is imitation gold. That’s what’s used almost exclusively for applications such as this. But the imitation is applied and sealed just as real gold leaf.

I have an old ornate mirror that used to be shiny and I think applying "gold leaf" will be perfect and just what it needs to look shiny again. Where do I purchase the brand of Gold Leaf adhesive size and Gold Leaf sealer as well as the sheets of gold leaf you use?

Hi Barbara, We used Old World Adhesive Size and Mona Lisa Gold Leaf Sheets. Great video. Do you think the gold leaf can be applied on smoother surfaces? I have a frame that has a decorative beaded edge with a flat plain interior veneer mat and then another smaller inside decorative beaded edge framing the area where I'll place my photograph. I can push the veneer mat and it moves. It seems to be just laid on top of a wood board backing and doesn't appear to be glued down to the back. The patina of this old frame is dull, which is nice, but it looks dirty. I'm afraid to wash it since it make lift all the gold color off. Can you recommend anything for my problem?

Sounds like a fun project, Patricia. Is the frame wood? If so you could try Rub 'n Buff which is a metallic wax you can rub into wood. Or if you like the idea of the gold leaf, test a small area maybe on the back to see if it works. No reason to think it wouldn't. Good luck! J&K

I have a harp that I'm going to engrave with a dremel, and I want to fill in the engraved grooves with gold. Do you think that gold leaf would work for this project? Would it hold up?

I will! I looked into melting gold and drizzling it into the grooves, but I found out there would be a lot of hurdles to overcome with that method.

It is not the real gold leaves. These are imitation metal gold leaves. The real gold leaves you would never be able to handle this way, they are much thinner and the technique to use is completely different.

I really enjoyed your video. It was easy to follow!! how long do you wait to put on a sealer? and can gold leaf stick to a frame that is made of plastic thats 3 dimensional?

+chrysalisrose Wow! So sorry we missed seeing your comment till now! You don't need to wait to apply the sealer. Gold leaf works great on 3-D surfaces. And the adhesive sizing (glue) is so sticky, it seems like it would stick to anything. Hope that helps!

Have you used this technique and these supplies to cover discolored spots on high quality gold leaf frame? I have a beautiful 3' x 4' framed archival print that the frame has turned "black" in spots where it was handles without gloves.

+Karen Gutcher Hmmmm... We haven't tried using the gold leaf to touch up an existing gold leaf frame. Have you tried silver tarnish remover? Gold doesn't tarnish, but sometimes gold leaf has other metals in it. You could try a tiny bit of tarnish remover on a cotton swab. Maybe where it wouldn't show. It's possible you could add more gold leaf using the technique in the video, but it might be hard to match the color. If you do try it, maybe test it first in an area that doesn't show. We painted the frame with spray paint first, but you could just seal it. We haven't tried using the gold leaf sealer on the wood, but it could work. If not, there are lots of good wood sealers out there. Krylon makes a spray-on clear acrylic that we have used to seal wood. Hope that helps!

I am not a professional when it comes to gold leaf, but I am a Master furniture maker, so I know a bit about glue. So, it was clear to me, that some of the advice regarding the glue, was not optimal. :)
