i have a similar kit but the problem i have is mostly about the durability of the gold plating. my costumers love gold plated sterling silver because it looks like gold, doesnt cause allergies and it can be sold back. however with daily use the silver (or other materials) lose their color too fast especially when washing hands or left in a humid environment. i want to be able to make a gold plating that lasts very long and my costumers shouldnt worry about washing hands. i see some gold plated items that last almost forever even when used daily. do you have a kit for make the gold plating more stable and durable?

With our 24K hard gold solution (shown in this video) you can plate very thick, we typically plate about 2 microns (80 microinches) thick onto customers jewelry. If you use our gold and plate it this thick it will last many many years. I have never had the gold wear off of anything that i plated properly with a thick layer. If it is wearing off fast as you are saying, either the gold is VERY thin, a "soft" gold, or not adhering well - maybe a combination of multiple things. Many metals can be plated with proper surface preparation. Nickel, steel, copper, brass, bronze, pewter, silver and many more metal types can be plated. Stainless steel requires a special activator, but can be plated very easily with this equipment. Aluminum and chrome are 2 metals which cannot be plated with this process. The solution needs to be replaced when the plating starts starts to take longer to deposit. Some people keep a log to track the amount of gold left in the solution. The other chemicals should be replaced about every other time you order gold solution.

Very interesting and convenient! I'm browsing your page now. I see you electroclean and rinse. Then surface activate (this is nickel activator correct?) and rinse. Then use your concentrated gold solution. Am I correct to assume your surface activator is nickel activator?

Brush plating can be used to plate larger items, however the metal type needs to be considered. If i/o shields are aluminum, for example, our kits will not be able to plate gold onto them.

I love the look and feel of this unit and would buy one if it weren't for the much higher price in comparison to all the other gold plating kits found on ebay for under $500. Otherwise a nice product.

Thank you! We're glad you like it. It is a substantial initial investment, but people often pay off the initial investment within not too many plating jobs. The value that adding gold to an item brings often pays the kit of quickly if doing Jewelry or plating various items at a charge. As a side note, this kit includes $325 worth of gold, alone. There is no kit that is quite like this one. I'm not aware of any complete kits for under $500, just be aware of gold content and the other accessories required when considering a purchase. Gold plating isn't something you want to cut corners with.

The complete kits under $500 can be found on ebay and are rather abundant with many various designs although as a compliment, thus far I still feel yours has the most professional look. Does it have the magnetic stirring system build in? Do you ship to Hong Kong? If yes, can you change the power voltage from110 to 240?

It does not have a magnetic stirring system built in. Our solutions do not require agitation and perform great without it. We can ship to Hong Kong. The Power Supply is fine with 240, however the heater requires 110v. This is easily solved using a voltage converter, they can be purchased on Amazon for around $40 for a really nice one. If you wanted we could include one in your order for you.

In a situation where you have a larger item, we generally recommend the "brush" plating method. If you refer to our other videos in our channel you can see examples of how brush plating works, and its benefits. Neither 'immersion' or brush' is the "best" way to do electroplating, it entirely depends on the project which style is appropriate.

To plate particular parts of an item we recommend using "Pen Plating". This fine-select tip looks similar to a Sharpie marker tip and allows for very specific areas to be plated. There are other ways of masking an area, but typically it's best if you do it the way I described, pen plating.

Can I use the unit for electroforming and plating as well?

Yes. This kit is used by some of our customers to perform Electroforming. It was designed to be a gold plating kit, but it does allow for some electroforming onto smaller objects. Keep in mind the beakers are only 1 liter in size, and the item needs to have quite a bit of solution around it (not barely fit in the beaker). If the items to be electroformed have a total surface area of 6 square inches or less they should work fine. For Electroplating in the JewelMaster a maximum surface area of 18 inches is all that is really feasible (unless you're plating half of the item and then plating the other half in two steps).

This is a great question about a common problem that we are going to address in one of our weekly Tech series videos. We call this "burning". it is normally caused by too high of voltage or if the gold solution gets too hot, more than 110° F. There is nothing wrong with the gold deposit other than the surface is irregular and doesn't reflect the light well so it looks brown. Make up a small amount of paste using baking soda and water and polish the "burned" area by hand using a soft cloth. This should bring the gold back to a high luster.

We are actually in the process of developing a circular anode that goes around the circumferance of the plating cell. In reality, though, unless you are needing exactly the same thickness everywhere, turning the piece isn't of great significance. The side exposed may have a few microinches more than the unexposed side.

We don't offer anything like that. Please do lots of research and do it correctly. Recycling gold can be a fairly hazardous and potentially very dangerous job. The process and chemicvals need to be used correctly or you can seriously injure yourself.

This kit only has 1 Liter beakers. For doing large items it is best to either Brush plate them with another kit (like the Universal Plater Kit) or have us custom make a large plating setup, one that has 1 Gallon or so beakers. A 1 Gallon setup wouldn't look the same as the JewelMaster, it would be more of a component based system - meaning it wouldn't be quite so self-contained. Typically a Gallon or more setup costs around $2,000 to $3,000 depending on your needs.

If I wish to gold plate 5g 24K gold on a silver oranment how much gold the gold solution should contain? How can I prepare gold solution so that it plates 5g gold on a silver chain uniformly?

The density of gold plating is 12.45mg per square inch, per micron. Therefore, you would need to determine the exact surface area and apply enough microns to achieve 5g of consumption, depending on the surface area. For example, if the total area was 10 square inches... 0.01245g x 10in2 = .1245g if plated to 1 micron. If you're looking to apply 5 microns total you would do: 5g ÷ .1245g = 40.16 microns. Using this same equation you could determine how many microns you would need to apply 5g of total gold. You would want your bath to start out with atleast 8g of gold to begin with in order to maintain a steady deposition rate of 1 micron per 5.5 minutes. For gold to be plated this thick, you would want to use a Pure (Soft) Gold, not the hardened gold shown in the video.

Sure, there are a few different techniques used to do masking. Depending on what the part to be plated is, there are different methods available. Electrical tape, fingernail polish (which is then removed with fingernail polish remover), paint stick, watercolor masking (as used by artists). Really anything that would resist a water-based solution. Good question!

You can control the thickness by how long you plate the item. For instance, if you plate an item for 5 min 30 seconds you will achieve 1 micron thickness. If you want twice as much you plate twice as long. To apply a vermeil thickness you will need to plate for 14 minutes, which will apply 2.5 microns or 100 micro-inches (vermeil).

How long gold plating will last purely depends on a few variables. 1) How thick the gold is applied. 2) What type of item is it/How will it be handled? The thickness is controlled by how long you plate the item. For instance, if you were to stop plating immediately after the item turns gold, that would be a very thin plate. However, if you spent multiple minutes plating that same area, it would be very thick. The thicker the gold the longer it lasts. Different types of items are handled differently, some a lot and some not at all. If it were a decorative item that is never touched it would stay gold plated indefinitely, could be centuries. If it were something like a Wedding ring that is worn daily, it then depends on how thick the gold is plated. If it were a thin plate it could wear off in a week. If it were very thick, like Vermeil plating (100 micro-inches) it cost last a lifetime. When done properly, gold plating lasts many years if not decades on most items. If it's a thick gold plate, even on an item that is handled properly, it should last many years unless it is purposely removed by abrasive means (polishing etc.)
