I think karat measures purity of gold, so I imagine gold that has come in contact with metals like lead, zinc etc. especially in the molten state will essentially be contaminated by these and so will be of lower karat purity than the virgin material used to manufacture the components. Interested to find out how much you got, if you are ol to share that info.
