love the fact how you took time to clarify all those seamingly simple techniques. I probably have the hang of most of them, but would have much sooner with this video! great work!

It is the end of a Materelli Whip Finish Tool that I sharpened into a chisel shape. I just flip the tool around in my hand when I'm down with the whip finish and cut the thread with the chisel. Works great.

For scissors, I like Anvils for everyday tying, particularly the short straight tipped ones. I also have a pair of Rubis Scissors from Charlie Craven with the tips ground to really fine points for dry fly and midge work and they're awesome. You'll also see me using Terra Tools from Wapsi (gold finish) which I use for a whole variety of things.

Great video thanks. I'm a self taught fly angler with only 3 seasons under my belt and have been wanting to learn as much as I can about tying, and really like the way you explain all the materials and the process step by step.

I have to congrat you for all the work that you do to make fly tying very simple, i'm a beginner fly angler and for now i never caught a trout with a fly and i think that thanks to your tying videos i will catch one soon, again thank you and keep on! A big cheer from Italy, Go Devils! ;)

Very practical approach. Pheasant tail makes better tail in my opinion. Brilliant way how you used the entire pheasant tail without cutting it for wingcase!

As always excellent presentation and tying. Just can't go wrong with the classic. I like that dubbing blend for the HE you use. I will be making up some that for sure. Mike

The dubbing assortment are all custom blends of different colors of rabbits fur, out of the packets you get fly a fly shop and hair cut from different color hare's masks. Actually, this coming week's video shows how I make it along with other dubbing blends.

Today I tied 18 of these in 4 colors: natural, olive, dark olive brown and march brown. I substituted the uv glue with normal 5 minute epoxy, which worked well. With additional pearl tinsel it gave a really nice flashback effect.

The tail feather used in this video is naturally colored (or at least that is what the package indicated) but I do routinely use dyed feathers, particularly dark brown. I too have feathers of birds I've shot that are much lighter in color, almost gray. They also have numerous damaged fibers that somewhat limit their use. I still tie with them because I like the idea of using every bit of the bird, but they do make for less colorful flies.

One of these, although a simplified version with just ribbing, dubbing and a bead gave me my first fish on a fly last week, it was a nice brown trout about 4lbs or 2kg in weight.

To this day, no nymph has produced more trout for me. You can flashback these, you can give them a little CDC collar, you can use red thread and give them a little hot spot, you can use biot for the tail and tie in the pheasant tail casing afterward, you can do all of the above on one fly…you can have several versions of these with maybe two or three other nymphs and be catching trout year round. They’re just so versatile, customizable and easy to tie…even for beginners.

Nice variation on a classic. I have dozens of natural pheasant tails from birds I shot. They don't look like the "natural" tails you use in your videos. The ones you use are more brown. Are they dyed brown?

This is a great looking pattern. I'm wanting to tie some up. I'm wanting to tie them in a caddis green color with a glossy green bead. Would you recommend this? Or is it too bold of a color? If so then what would you suggest? All the best.

great fly however id like to ask why traditional hares ear guard hair was not used for the tail?
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 9 лет назад
Just a personal preference thing for me as I've never really liked the look of a guard hair tail. Using pheasant tail also speeds the tying process because you are effectively tying in both the tail and the wing case at the same time.

I used the same fly but without the wing case in New Zealand, on my second cast into a clear pool near a road bridge I hooked a huge rainbow trout which pulled so hard the line burnt my finger
@jamesrichards9933
@jamesrichards9933 7 лет назад
Beesa10 what part of New Zealand are you from I'm in the Hawkes bay
@Beesa10
@Beesa10 7 лет назад
I'm actually not from NZ, I'm from the UK. I was on holiday and doing some fly fishing, I hooked two big trout both on nymphs, the first was on this hares ear nymph, the second was on a gold head Montana nymph. Unfortunately I lost both fish, the first take was so ferocious, the fish hooked itself and snapped the line almost before I could react. I lost the second fish when my line snagged under a big rock. I'm a relatively accomplished all round angler but I can't claim to be the best. I felt sick with disappointment that time because I lost a really big fish & made the schoolboy error of not keeping my line up out of the water around the snags. NZ is a beautiful country and great fishing to be had no question.
