I think leaving Thybulle out is a big big mistake.

Insane not taking Matisse, that guy helped us medal at the last Olympics. If he wasn't in that Tokyo campaign, no way would we have got on the podium. I know they are tough decisions, but Matisse would have been a no-brainer for the squad. We need wing-defence and on-ball pressure, he is one of the best in the world. Sorry, but cutting him was a dumb decision. He doesn't need to be a lights out shooter, he makes up for that with defence. Poor decision.

Leaving Tisse out is madness. Playing intra-squad games is nothing like playing NBA-heavy internationals. I love Delly, but he hasn't had any impact for a long time.

I would have thought the way to be competitive against the USA , Serbia and France would be with youth and energy. We don't have height, we have energy. Watching Tisse last olympics games brought Joy, watching Kay last world was frustrating. I'm not going to watch the boomers for a few years. Seems too commerical and just promoting Melbourne, and then there is the Murdock/Kayo/Espn pay wall. I used to love this team, so depressed.

You need to change the title of this post. There is no Gold Standard without Thybulle. The selection committee ought hand their heads in shame. How can you justify keeping Delevadova in unless due to politics? But political decisions have never been made in Australian Basketball have they?

Tisse shoots it better than Dyson or Delly actually. And did anyone ever solve the mystery of why CG didn't get played at the world cup? Our best defender and best shooter both left at home jesus.

this is a joke , I respected Goorjian for long time, until the last fatal Boomer's performance in Japan.He keept on bench the best 3 pt shooter when team needed him, now he cut him from the team. He just proved that Is blind or just doesn't like some players? Magnay? McVeigh? They will stay papalized with open mouth watching flying over their heads NBA players. It would be very painful drama .Cut Matisse?!!! Dynamic experienced NBA player? I am sure that after this he will never agree to play for Australia again. Goulding is better shooter and more experienced than McVeigh- the star of one evening. Goorjian getting old ,let him work with Bee ball kids.

Goorjian has really gambled on this line up. If they succeed, he is a hero. If they fail, this time they will be looking to move on with the coach. Will be an interesting tournament.

An embarrassment of riches. Excited to see Jack McVeigh on the court. I can`t believe Goorj cut Tisse tho, need his defense and he keeps morale up for the supporters by keeping us in the loop. Kay did well to get back in as he wasn't producing much when it came down to the wire in the past. Delly worked hard to get back in so I hope the fire carries over to the actual games. Jingles, good on him for being consistent but hmm...getting a bit old now, I wonder what his role is going to be?

You can argue about a 3rd big with Magnay vs taking CG43, especially coming up against teams like France (Wemby Gobert), USA(Embid) and Serbia (Jocic) where an additional big with real size is needed and personaly with Kay and McVeigh in the squad and Patty likely coming off the bench I would have taken Magnay anyway. To me though the BIGGEST shock is not Delly but DYSON DANIELS making this squad. YES he is a future of the program, however he has already been blooded at the WC2023. If you are taking Delly as a 3rd point guard behind Giddey and Exum with Patty also able to play point, why bring Dyson over Mattise!? Dyson is turnover prone, is just as poor a shooter as Mattise, a great but still not as good a defender and cant play the positions that Mattise can. Mattise can fill the same role as Cooks and by bringing him OVER Dyson it allows you to play that ultra athletic defensive small ball lineup if you need/want and gives more flexibility. With Cooks and Mattise both out you cannot play that sort of style and it limits changes you can make in games and over the Tournament. Kay over Cooks is a no brainier given he is an excellent defender and rebounder (like Cooks) but is able to stretch the floor which Cooks cant. With the lack of shooting on the team he has to be there to space the floor for others... dont be surprised to see him start alongside Landale in the front court. What Delly brings is exactly what we lacked at the last world cup, heart, grit, some creativity, an attack dog at the point who can keep his head and run the offense for a few minutes when needed... Dyson cant/doesn't do this...yet. The same for Joe as he brings the shooting and creativity that Dyson, Green and to some degree Exum do not do on the wing. Starting 5 will be Giddey Green Exum Reath/Kay Landale. Mattise out Dyson in is the ONE decision that was shocking and does not make sense if you are serious about a gold medal.

Apparently, Ingles had already packed his bags and getting ready to move to Minnesota to play for the Timberwolves. He must have thought he was out.

We probably have a better overall standard of depth in this squad than previous with all of Green, Landale, Daniels & Duop getting decent NBA minutes. Trouble is they are just NBA role players,. We probably no longer have the star scoring level of Mills & with Ingles seemingly on the decline, I'm not sure we've got enough scoring power. Will be interesting to see how it pans out with Giddey holding the reigns, with both his own scoring and distribution.

If they roll with Jock, Josh, Dante and Josh, I tihnk they have to have shooting at the 4, either Joe Ingles or Nick Kay to keep the floor stretched.

I’m so disappointed Thybulle and cooks are left out. Thybulle is the best defender and cooks has way better offensive ability and game then will magney. Honestly, I hope the coach makes the right rotations as I think we have potential to win another medal. And how is delly in this squad ?

Why would you take both Kay and Magnay?

Goorjian is a hard man to follow in his selections a lot of the time. He is the only coach to get them a medal though.

Watching the gaze family tribute the other night and goorjan was asked about the boomers basketball philosophy/dna and how he manages all the new and very young players coming in. And his response was so unnerving and I instantly thought of the boomers very average world champs performance and how it might happen again in Paris. He could have picked a balanced team with points in them in the paint and shooting and running the floor but instead he going with a bullshit OKC 5 out offence and over fills the team with “shooters” who do little else and then inexplicably cuts out our defensive heart (thybille) and brings in an undeserving third over the hill veteran (Delly) to add to mills and ingles who are great but are very lucky to have been given a farewell tour. . Nba style 3 ball will not work in Olympics you need lay ups and free throws and rebounding at both ends

How does Delly get in before Goulding. Ridiculous.

I love patty I really do. He help build australia. But he can’t defend. So I’m hoping limited minutes impact player shoot that’s it off the bench. France and Canada and Slovenia and France this year. I don’t see aus with a medal

All these geniuses predicting no wins, that's entirely possible due to the stupidly tough group they are in. Olympics are very difficult or we would medal all the time. Just get behind the boys, there is a reason the selectors exist and not us fans picking the team.

This is what I’m hoping for, given some of these talking points and my (unlikely) wish for McVeigh to become an offensive focal point. Starting 5: Giddey, Dante, Green, McVeigh, Reath (or Landale, toss up) Average minutes per game: Giddey-25 Dante -25 Mills- 15 Delly - 15 Green - 30 Dyson- 5 Joe - 15 McVeigh- 25 Nick - 5 Reath -20 Landale-20 Magnay - crumbs.

Wow - talk about misrepresenting a title, no where near "Gold Standard". 1. Coaching is clearly terrible. Should have begged Brett Brown to return, failing that Trevor Gleeson should be at the helm. 2. Ingles, Delly, Magnay should not be there. They bring nothing. 3. Thybulle, Cooks, and CG should be in. 4. Can't play Mills and Giddy at the same time as you would only have a 3 man defence. 5. Other teams are getting hard workouts via a real competition for qualifying. Boomers get two games against a terrible China team. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't make it out of our pool.
