Gold testing from home 

I was so afraid to acid test for a long time, I think the word acid scared me, but then I thought lemon juice is an acid. Thanks for showing us your process.

Middle ring looked tarnished but passed the 14k acid test...is that normal for a 14k gold to tarnish like that?

Just purchased a 3mm diamond cut 24' franco chain. I really like the way 2 chains look together. I also love the way the rope and franco look together. I was wondering if you could show a franco and rope combo but with a silver franco and a gold rope. Im just curious because i like a rope in gold so I would rather purchase a gold one. I bought a 14k gold chain from a well established jewelry store. It was tested at a pawnshop with the digital tester that they use and marked from 13.98 to 14.02 14.03. It was also tested with acid and passed but didn’t pass the magnet test so I’m confused now. Anyone know why? Maybe the alloy used?

hey man, my family is really old and traces back to the civil war. We have allot of silver and gold items. However, I got curious and decided to do the magnet test on the chains that are in the old jewelry chest. Nearly all of the had some attraction. Its it just a straight rule that all fake gold jewelry is Ferris alloy in them? Magnet test is 100% reliable qualifier for the presence of gold in a chain? I am extremly puzzled. Because one of the chains is a sarah cov chain. That one also had attraction to the magnet. Is Sarah Cov pieces of craap?

Easy way to tell is get a torch and burn the crap out of the jewelry if it ember bright orange yellow then it real gold and if the conent is lower then the ember colour won't be bright and hold up as long.

I have 14K Turkish very fine, station style necklace and the chain parts (not the stations) are slightly magnetic , but my local jeweler made the acid scratch test and the whole necklace passed it... Is it something in alloy that makes the chain little bit magnetic ?

Lead isn't magnetic. So my "gold" ring could just be plated over lead or some other non magnetic soft metal.
