Frank (#705): Six hundred people lived in Frank, one of the great coal camps of the Canadian Rockies. Its Main Street offered an impressive array of false front hotels and stores. It was touted as the town of the future due to its massive coal veins. In April 1903 catastrophe struck when 74 million tons of rock hurtled down the face of Turtle Mountain and obliterated most of the town. The town never recovered, and today only deep fields of broken rock mark its fall.

Went through there in the late 60's what devastation. Closer to home, went up to the head waters of the Oyster River on Vancouver Island. Big slide, dammed the river, created a lake, can see all the tree stumps' preserved under the water. Look like ground down pencils. Boulders the size of a house hundreds of meters up the other side of the valley! That's over a kilometer from the slides origin on the other side of the river. Some pretty cool rocks though, thats what I went there for. No human lives lost, but the trapped trout have become a new variant. rainbow, and cutthroat trout have inter bred, and become cuttbows. They are a good size, and unique to this spot.

As a footnote to this story; my grandfather immigrated to Fernie in 1906. He went to school with Marian Leitch (sp ?) the little infant girl that was found on the rocks in Frank. After the disaster she was sent to live in Fernie with her Aunt & Uncle.

A cousin of mine was driving through Frank with his family one day, when his 5yo son that had never been there before spoke out from the back seat "Daddy. there is dead people here"

I remember my dad taking us to Frank back in 70s.. there were only couple families still living there. Turtle Mountain was called Turtle because from beginning of time the mountain was moving slowly.
