This is one of the better (by far) videos I have watched that easily explains how to tell the difference. Most will show black sand, pan it, then show the gold in one part of pan while the sand is in the other part. Thank you for showing a MIX of different items and how they react to the movement of the water.
Thanks for showing the difference, I wish I had seen your video before our trip because we found the plenty of "fools gold". Regardless, we still had a lot of fun as a family looking for gold in Northern New Mexico.
The proverb “All that glitters is not gold” is literally true. Gold does not glitter, it’s the same color in all light at any angle. If it sparkles … it isn’t gold, it’s pyrite
Is it possible to have flour gold so small that it does move around in the pan? Thanks for the great video. I have a feeling I've been collecting Mica haha
Thanks for taking time to explain all this. Specific gravity of gold is way heavier than pyrite or mica is. That's why gold sticks to the bottom of the pan and others wash away. Pyrite is a mineralizing sulfide that can bring in gold. Micas can be alteration minerals that form from mineralizing solutions that bring in the gold. So it's important to differentiate these minerals...Good Luck!
Awesome and helpful video. I have a question, I collect the mica on our property and it is mostly covered in red clay. How would I wash the clay off without hurting the mica? I have sent some of the cleanest specimens to my sisters, as fools gold from my home, as gifts. This clay is hard to get off. I have also come across some nice crystals and again, the cleaning process is difficult. What is a good way to deal with clay? Thank you. This video helped me explain to my Hubby that what we were finding in the ground, we are building a home, are not gold flakes.
Hi, I collected some rock samples where I found golden flakes very thin and when I press it, it starts to become fragments. I heated it to glowing bright yellow then I cooled it and it maintained the same golden color. It is inert to acids. I'm confused whether it's is gold or mica or Pyrite please answer my question
I found a piece but I don’t think it’s pyrite. I think it’s gold colored mica. One reflection will be clear and one a gold colored. Frustrating but fun.
I think in my locality is only ultra fine gold that also floats and a lot of mica. If Im tapping the pan I think first goes mica . Im using more angles of the view if it glitters. then tapping again and those real gold flakes is harder to tap them out and suck them. And they shine from all angles. But mica definitely suck. 😢
Your the best.... Subscribing. This shiny, flaky stuff has been driving me crazy. I have tons of mica and pyrite in my pan. Can find gold attached to these minerals?? Will there be gold in these areas?
There might be but nowhere near as much. Gold is formed under very heavy pressure and heat, which is much more than pyrite needs. So no you most likely won't find gold attached to these minerals.
You know... I've been doing this for a long time now and I only wish someone told me about how gold doesn't move. I was so scared for years that I was losing all my gold out of my pan and only left with black sand but in reality... I never had gold in the first place... Well not very much at least. Thank you for that. You're great. But... One question... I have this big mica rock and the dang thing is so flipping heavy... I was wondering... Is there something else with it? Could there also be gold?
Thanks for the information. You might be interested in a video here on RU-vid titled "Headless Valley (Mel and Ethel Ross, 1958)". @ 1 hour 16 minutes and 24 seconds they find what they believed to be gold...a LOT of gold! I'd love to hear if you think it really is gold. Thanks.
AHHH MAN ! DARN IT IVE WATCHED TONS OF VIDEOS AND I HAVE BEEN WRONG ALL THESE YEARS AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF PEOPLE I THOUGHT IT WAS THE OTHER WAY AROUND...I THIOGHT THAT FOOLS GOLD WAS REAL HARD AND IF YOU SCRAPED IT IT WOULNT CHIP OFF AND THAT IF YOU USED YOUR FINGER NAIL AND PRESSED A LINE IN IT THAT REAL GOLD WOULD LEAVE A LINE IN IT AND THAT IF IT WAS REAL SOME MIGHT EVEN CHIP OFF... SO IVE GOT IT BACKWORDS
