Jamel thank you so much for everything you do, what I love the most is how you help this younger generation appreciate great music they otherwise might not have experienced, much love and Gods blessings my friend 👍
According to Dutch news , earlier this year Golden Earring co-founder , singer and guitarrist George Kooyman was diagnosed with the disease ALS . The band has officially stopped performing after decades . Let's all pray for the health of Brother George . Golden Earring is my favorite European rock band , and I have some song suggestions besides the obvious Radar Love and Twilight Zone . Check out When The Lady Smiles , Midnight Moonlight , Silent Tears , and Long Blonde Animal . My personal favorite is Something Heavy Going Down . The song and video make me recall my days as a navy radar operator on warships sailing in hostile waters . The lyrics ' on a midnight operation when the searchlights make your skin crawl ' give me something close to PTSD feelings . Peace !
Hard to believe that this band has like 25 albums in their catalog, yet they’re only known for basically 2 songs here in the U.S. But have been big in Europe going back to the 60’s.
It"s a shame Radar Love got most of the airtime from Moontan. Every song on that album is kick butt. However vanilla Queen did get some air time when I was a youngster in the seventies.
@@ronaldpena8990 hell yeah. Budgie are essentially Welsh Rush. Gotta check out Breadfan, Crash Course In Brain Surgery, Anne Neggan, Who Do You Want For Your Love, I Can't See My Feelings, Black Velvet Stallion, I Turned To Stone.
This band started in 1961 and recently stopped performing after George Kooymans (the bands guitarist) was diagnosed with ALS. The rest of the members decided they didn’t want to go on without him.
@@christinerobinson9372 - they had 50 years of Rock'n'Roll together. That's like being married for a lifetime. I guess every one of those years counts for 2. ;)
Ouch. Sad. I have a friend living in A-dam, I guess he was mistaken when he said they were still active. I liked thinking they were still out there somewhere playing. I guess all the best things have to end just like everything else. They had a great run.
Back in the early 80s, noir was a big thing. This vid is a nod to noir films of the 40s and spy movies of the early 60s, with a nice helping of kink sprinkled in for good measure. It's a hit man's experience of being double-crossed, tortured and set up for execution, with his hallucinations contrasting with reality. 'Well the night weighs heavy on his guilty mind...'
Fun fact: Golden Earring’s lead guitarist was a huge Robert Ludlum fan and he wrote this song about a character in one of his novels. You may have heard of him… Jason Bourne
"Twilight Zone" is a 1982 hit by Dutch band Golden Earring. It was written by the band's guitarist George Kooymans, who got the inspiration from a book by Robert Ludlum, The Bourne Identity. "Twilight Zone" appears on their 1982 album Cut and pays tribute to the 1960s television series The Twilight Zone. It spent more than half a year (27 weeks) on the U.S. Pop charts. It was the group's sole Top 10 Pop single on the US Billboard Hot 100 (the song reached #16 on the Cashbox chart) and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Album Tracks chart, the band's only No. 1 hit in America
Wow, so Radar Love only made it to 13 on the Billboard Top 100 but made it to number 10 on US Cashbox top 100. US Billboard Hot 100 13 US Cash Box Top 100 10 I would never have guessed, considering the historical impact their first hit Radar Love had. You can still hear that 4 times a week on any Classic Trax station in the US.
Its amazing to see the band performing this ata music festival in 2015. The guys are damn near 70 and still have it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wEOSDsFVaRU.html
@@kimdeese6410.. I entered high school in 82'.. Friday night dances after the football games.. rocked to 70's and 80's on the dance floor (gymnasium or cafeteria!) lol. Fun memories!
Working one's ass off in a restaurant kitchen on 6th Street in Austin Tx. Its 11 p.m. on a Friday and the place is jammed...16 crazy, stoned, half drunk folk flinging food like madmen, with this just blaring out of the stereo, Good Times!
This came out in the early days of MTV. This was maybe the very first music video that I can think of that had good acting and a story. I remember loving this song back in the day.
I've heard this song a hundred times, at least; first time was about 1982. I've never looked into Golden Earring and can't even remember ever seeing the video...was kinda cool. But I sure as hell know the song.
Now i'm a very proud Dutchman! Thank you for this '80s sound of the Earring, Jamal! ♥ It's hard to believe that they won't ever play again after more than 50 Years of Rock & Roll! Guitarplayer George Kooymans has diagnosed ALS so hé can't play anymore. It's sad but thier heritage will never be forgotten. Maybe you can try "Radar Love" one time?
@rib bit unfortunately Spyker has been declared bankrupt for the 20th time last January, so you probably have to wait quite some time to drive one… On the other hand, if you want to drive a Dutch sports car, there still is Donkervoort
I have all their CDs, they are great. Kind of a cross between Foghat and the Rolling Stones. My favorites would be songs like “When the Lady Smiles,” “Paradise in Distress,” “The Devil Made Me Do It,” and “Kill Me” (which was covered by Iron Maiden.
Yeah, the still the cold war was still going strong when this came out. It had the very European feel to it. I always loved this song and video. It was the days when MTV was still new and videos sometimes had East German dancers interrogating spies. Ah, the good times.
Yes, I wish Jamel would've listened to the album version, especially for the bass section and the guitar solo! Which is exactly why I think first time listeners should ignore official videos for songs, since many of them are cut for time for broadcast on MTV.
The first time I heard this song I was watching an episode of Miami Vice. That was one of the coolest TV shows ever. Imagine a crime drama with music videos.
MV was a game changer for sure!! Maybe Jamel should check MV sound tracks, great music and appearances by Phil Collins, Ted Nugent, Sheena Easton, Glenn Frey, Melanie Griffith, Willie Nelson and many more...Jamel ?????? 👍🏽❤
@@wen-nz3sk I wonder if I watched some of those shows if they'd still be as good as they were then. Back in the day I looked for that show to come on all week.
Not just music, but great mainstream music. I love watching the clip from the pilot, In the Air Tonight is playing. Crockette is driving and Tubbs is loading his shotgun. That's all me and my friends talked about for the next week.
You may have heard when the bullet hits the bone the actual lyric is when the bullet hits the phone why do you think that they show a phone getting shot
This song was made just after the Cold War was ending when intergovernmental spy and assassin stories were at an apex. The creater of the song was inspired by the book, "The Bourne Identity," which movie we have all seen. However, in this song, The guy is a Russian spy in Turkey. The stanza, "My beacon's been moved under moon and star:" refers to this. The 'beacon' is referring to his own life, and the 'moon and star' is a reference to the crescent moon and star of the Turkish flag. Why Russia and Turkey? Because during the cold war, those two coutries entered into a crisis for which Turkey had to turn to the United States for help, and Russia was believed to use assassins, and then double cross them. Song verse meanings: VERSE 1 ("It's two a.m. The fear has gone I'm sittin' here waitin' The gun still warm Maybe my connection is tired of takin' chances") He's been sent by Russia to Turkey to kill someone, he's just finished the job, his gun is still warm. Now he's sitting in his hotel room waiting for his contact to get him the information he needs to get out of the country. But he realizes his contact is late... VERSE 2: ("Yeah there's a storm on the loose, sirens in my head I'm wrapped up in silence, all circuits are dead I cannot decode, my whole life spins into a frenzy") Now he's been abandoned by all his contacts inside the country, (wrapped up in silence, all circuits are dead), and he now realizes that his own country is now going to assassinate him because he's a loose end. The rest speaks for itself and is self explanatory
The album version has a longer drum solo segment in the middle and a more extended outro. The video and the song are based on spycraft stories of agents being doublecrossed by their own allies. Golden Earring actually holds the World Record for the longest operating (recording and touring) Rock band with 2 original members. Radar Love is another of their big hits, but for some other favorites I recommend: Clear Night Moonlight; She Flies on Strange Wings; Something Heavy Going Down; Ce Soir; Vanilla Queen. Glad you enjoyed it!
'Twilight Zone' (1982) was directed by Dick Maas, who made THREE of the most successful Dutch movies of all time: Flodder (1986), Amsterdamned (1988) and Flodder in Amerika! (1992). Maas also directed another Golden Earring music video, for their song 'When The Lady Smiles' (1984).
3:20 to 3:45 “Like Scarface, The Godfather and The X-Files had a baby.” "just walkin with em out....not a care in the world" - Prime Jamelisms!! I have been away for two weeks. What have I missed?? 😢. I'm lost!! Missed you Jamel!
I was a teen when this came out and all I knew about Golden Earring was that They had 1 hit many years ago. That was many, many, many years ago. 2 hits now....
@Terry In America yes, the rest of the world knows GE oh so very well, 25 Top 10's and since You Tube is world wide, I guess America as usual just does not get it. Says something.
Most videos back then where like mini movies. Even had the video music awards every year. A real good song and video is the Smugglers Blues by Glen Frey. Both this song and and Smugglers Blues came out when Miami Vice was one of the hottest shows on T.V. And Scar Face was in the theatres . First review my brother. I wish I could take you back to that time. Those where my teenage years.
Just before 1:00am where I am . I happened to see this notifier pop up & now I have to stay up to watch your reaction ! Such a great song !! Definitely check out Radar Love by them .
This was one of my favorite videos of '82. It seemed like a legitimate episode of the original show, especially with the nightmare scenario at the end: Set up for an execution, blindfold and all, but the execution never comes and he's left there, waiting...and waiting... Primo stuff for early MTV.
Thanks for taking the time to react to such a great band. They blew my mind back in the '70s and '80s, the Dutch really gave us some cool music... Just like Focus! Rock on Big J 🤘
Jamel I'm going to tell you something here that deeply impossible to express how much I love this song. This song will always rank up high as the best song ever. The beat , vocals.. lyrics . is so mesmerizing. Could very easily be ranked in the single digits as far as favorite song of all time.
YES!!!! Born in 1974. So many great memories from the school bus. Whenever this song came on we would beg the driver to turn it up. He was an old WW2 vet named Mr. Heiser. He turned it up every time.
LOVE this song. Used to play it live, very hard to get it to groove like they do. Their drummer is just awesome. "Where am I to go now that I've gone too far?"
Not gonna lie - I absolutely love this song and video. I was a little kid when I saw this on MTV. The uncensored video is cool too. A great video. 👍👍🎸🎸👍👍
One reason I watch your channel is that I've been listening to so many of these rock songs for so many years, but I've never seen any of the music videos. So we're both getting to watch them for the first time. 👍
This is the *short* version of the song! Per IMDB, "The original version of the song is almost 8 minutes long, but the music video was shot for the shorter radio edit only. Over time, fans have made their own versions of the video for the longer cut of the song by adding various concert and other footage. However, these are all unofficial videos. There is no official video for the longer version of the song."
@@chrisstory563 I don't know there was a cut version. Then again, it has been about 30 years since I seen it, and stumble across the age restricted version on RU-vid.
@@chrisstory563 It must've been a "pan and scan", basically re-edited to zoom in on her above the shoulders. Apparently from what I've read on IMDB, MTV was the one to add the red bar and CENSORED tag. How dare they deface art! :)
It came out in 1982 and The music video was one of the first to feature a cinematic storyline and dance choreography and was a hit on the fledgling MTV network (in somewhat edited form, as the original European cut was notable for a sequence featuring a topless woman), helping the song to become the second international hit for the band.
I went to see them in the 80s in Kalamazoo Mi. There were three bands and they are the only one I remember. They were amazing. The lead guitarist actually sings the leads on this song. Hes an extremely talented musician. They all are and I believe they are still together.
Are you receiving me is an incredible song and probably my favorite from Moontan. That whole album was fantastic. Radar Love is good but the rest of the album was underrated.
One of the most popular concept videos from the early days of MTV. The record labels were throwing BIG money into videos then. Some bands were "allowed" to make club versions of their videos; in other words, videos intended to be played in adult night clubs. But the club versions didn't have the "CENSORED" blocking on them. And yes, Motley Crue had a club version of "Girls, Girls, Girls..."!
This is one of those road trip songs. You still need to check out some Montrose, one of the greatest classic rock bands. Check out Rock the Nation or Good Rockin tonight by them
Until their sudden retirement this year due to the terminal illness of a band member, Golden Earring was the oldest continuous rock band, going back to 1961 (60 years!!!). They had the same core lineup since 1970 (51 years!!!)
Live they where even better, my sister was a hugh fan and she took me with her to a lot of concerts. Loved them ever since. Proud Dutch girl. So sad George now having ALS making them stop. They where famous for their video's.
Golden Earring, best Dutch rock band ever and so much more than Radar Love and Twilight Zone. Underrated band in America. They have delivered great music with a lot of (unfortunately) undiscovered pearls. Started in 1965 until February 2021 when the band was forced to stop. George Kooymans (singer / guitarist / founder) has the progressive muscle disease ALS. The news about the legendary guitarist of Golden Earring, who is already alive, hits fans, but also many people who have little or nothing to do with his band and rock music.
This song came out in 1982...I was 15 year old. When this song was released I went bought their album, Cut. I eventually bought the cassette because a year later I bought a car that had a cassette player in it. Still one of their best songs EVER. The extended version is even better!
There is a third song by this band that is awesome, but probably less known in the US. The video was banned in lots of countries. Even the countries that would play it, refused to play the last part of the video on TV. It's called "When the lady smiles". If you want to react to it, make sure you have the full and uncensored video.
This song came out in 1982 when I was 15 years old and I was totally blown away by it the first time I heard it on the radio. This version you just reacted to is a much shorter version than what they play on the radio. I heard this before I heard their other hit, Radar Love, and I was hooked into Golden Earring from that day to today.
As a sp ed teacher. Id play music in my office during my paper work time! My boss a good mormon lady came and i immediately turned my laptop off ! She said no. Who is that? Lol we turned her on to some great stuff! Our office rocked. They came for the best coffee and music! Lol
Golden Earring was a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961 in The Hague as The Golden Earrings (the definite article was dropped in 1967, while the "s" was dropped in 1969). They achieved worldwide fame with their international hit songs "Radar Love" in 1973, which went to number one on the Dutch charts, reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, and went to number thirteen on the United States charts, "Twilight Zone" in 1982, and "When the Lady Smiles" in 1984. During their career they have had nearly 30 top-ten singles on the Dutch charts while releasing 25 studio albums.
Golden Earring, Dutch band, highly underrated and underplayed, though in Canada, we did get this played a lot as well as Radar Love, but... they've got a whole catalogue, and I challenge anybody to find a band that is better at telling a story with, not only their lyrics, but the music as well. That is some top notch artistry right there.
