Golden Hour Backlit Portrait Photography Tips using Natural Light Behind the Scenes
In today's video I will be showing you guys how I shoot in natural light during golden hour, natural light shooting tips and what camera settings i use. I also have a photoshop tutorial on how I edit backlit photo's and how I bring back the detail in a separate video. Link for that video is below. For this shoot I used my 85mm 1.2l Canon Lens and my 35mm 1.4 Sigma Lens with my Canon 5d mark iii Camera Body. Let me know in the comments below what you do or how you shoot to get those golden hour portraits and let me know what more of you would like to see in my future videos.

Michelle *** lol! Thanks Michelle! It’s honestly ok, it’s RU-vid haha. Not too many ppl realize that this was literally my 2nd video ever made! So it is not the greatest & I didn’t really expect it to even get this many views and its my 2nd most watched. Probably all the negative comments boosted it in the algorithm 😂😂 not complaining though!

Loved the topic of the video, but wish that: - The videographer would be more experienced. Very shaky and distracting. - Not sure why there are "shot" sounds with stills that cut out some voice. Also very distracting. Would love to see more tutorial videos like this, just giving some feedback as I dropped out at 2m20 and feeling the need of letting you know.

gimmecookiez hey I appreciate your feedback and yeah this video kinda sucks I didn’t expect it to even really get much views. This was maybe my 3rd Video out on RU-vid so I was still learning filming and all that other stuff. I’ve gotten much better though and you can check out more recent bts on my channel 😁

the shot sounds are when the camera op clickes the shutter while taking video. not sure why canon has this as a feature and why you can take photos in video mode at all.

@Adrienople

In all fairness the camera expert is busy working so I mean... *Shrugs* also the noisiness is the autofocus lens they have on the camera, its not the friend who is holding the camera at fault for the noise, its just the sound of the type of lens trying to constantly re-focus.

Honestly I do not like the photographs . I don't know if you are using exposure compensation during backlit. I hate the flares as well
@Stacybecca
@Stacybecca 5 лет назад
Not when you are shooting manual. If you are shooting with automatic exposure modes such as Aperture priority, shutter priority, and Programmed Auto then yes use the exposure compensation. And I love flares so obviously, flares are a personal preference. There ya go!

Tatyana Zadorin in 1978 I started shooting back light for most of my professional work, I later added a sailwind bellows on my Hasselblad CM500 so I didn't need to hold my hand to shade the lens, all of us have our preferred styles. I liked backlight for the rich colours so I made sure I had no lens flare where your style you prefer the lens flare.I used to shoot from a small step ladder which was above the models eye level and would mainly use just the background without the sky which gave it a nice pastel like back drop.Now Im retired its good seeing other photographers work using similar set ups but achieving different results.No one style is best its what the photographer and model choses on the day of the shoot which they both like is what counts more then being technically perfect.

your welcome Tatyana, I seen a number of negative comments on the video production etc the reality is you took the time to show people what you enjoy at no cost to them and they turn around and treat you like they just spent $1000's buying a professional video off you, you tube videos like yours are not meant to be professionally done they are done inexpensively so the content can be shared for free, if you took the time and expense to have the videos professionally done then you would have to charge for them yet the buyers would only learn what you are good enough to do for them for free.

I was about to post much of the same information. I started shooting (on film) in the mid-80's. While I don't consider myself a portrait photographer (I prefer landscape, wildlife and action), a paying gig is a paying gig and I haven't found many portrait clients who will pay for photos where you can't see their faces. I did notice that most of Tatyana's IG photos weren't as blown out and most of her subjects' faces were very visible so she may have just been doing this for fun. A few things @davidmarselos didn't mention: 1. Shoot with the sun as low as possible. Even after the sun has actually set. Sometimes that is the most beautiful light. 2. Review your test shots. Make sure the face and eyes are clearly visible even though a lot can be done in post. 3. I like to find filtered sun if possible. Trees, clouds anything that will lessen the harshness and make it easier to create a photo that is consistently exposed. I use an app to check for clouds at the time of the shoot. 4. Get the widest aperture you can afford. 5. Get a camera that handles relatively high ISO well. 6. Horses do bite and the two smaller ones were ponies.

@TatyanaZadorin
@TatyanaZadorin 6 лет назад
Joshua Zanon how much under exposed was your subject? Because that’s an easy fix with Photoshop you can lighten her/him. When shooting your settings sound correct, just keep shutter lower so you get more lighting or move your aperture to 1.4 if you can

nur alamsyah higher aperture today just get a better focus, I shoot at least 1.8-2.0 and underexposure. Then you can lighten the subject in post!

Ethan Swope Mainly did the background with that golden look I feel like it adds something more to the image it’s my favorite style of shooting. But her face does come out dark in raw so I just lighten up her face in Photoshop. I do have a tutorial on how I edit my backlit photos as well in the description below!
@שרוןהבר
@שרוןהבר 6 лет назад
@@TatyanaZadorin This method used by some (women) photographers who shoot against backlit or she sun, whitout any fill light, reflector, strobs/speedlights. I don't do it. In natural light I expose for the subject, because I want the subject to come out properly expose in camera, rather than lighten her in post. Given that the background might be blown, I don't shoot against the sun or bright sky. I look for background that is not brighter than the subject. When I shoot against strong backlit I expose for the background and put speedlight as a fill light. If I have to do a lot of retouch in post it means for me that I got bad exposure. Almost all women photographers I know (from RU-vid and in person) use only natural light. The use of reflectors and strobs seems to be a men thing. Using natural light only, saves tons of accessories to go around with (and you don't need assistant) which is a big advantage. On the other hand it takes lots of work in post. Either way the look is completely diffetent and is up to personal preferences.
@TatyanaZadorin
@TatyanaZadorin 5 лет назад
@@שרוןהבר Hey yeah i agree! I noticed that as well that more women are natural light photographers and men love using equipment etc. Maybe because its so much more technical? I do not mind editing though i love it. I feel like that is the most fun part of my job. But at the end of the day I agree there really is no wrong way in photography as long as it looks good, lighting is still on point why not :) Thank you for responding!
