I'm not exactly sure if this is the reason for her, but as a semi-singer myself, this is something I've noticed. Singers usually sing at their best when they can apply their own emotions and experiences/soul into what they're singing. So if the singer is heterosexual, or perhaps had a certain person/experience in mind while singing the piece, when they think about that inspiration, they can sing with more full emotion in their voice. During vocal lessons ( Particularly for musical theater in my case), one of the first things I'm told to do when interpreting a song is to think about something that makes me relate to the song
