The modern golden Buddha statue at Dambulla is an impressive sight, towering over the surrounding area. It's located at the foot of the cave temple complex, housed within a modern building completed in 2000 with Japanese donations.
The statue itself is a golden colored standing Buddha in the dhammachakka mudra (wheel-turning pose). The building it's on is cube-shaped and has a large neon sign, giving it a more contemporary feel compared to the ancient cave temples.
Some visitors find the modern temple to be a bit kitschy, but it's definitely worth a visit if you're exploring the Dambulla Cave Temple complex.
