Calvin, isn't it crazy that these guys made Nightfire, arguably one of the best Bond games, and they also made 007 Legends, arguably one of the worst Bond games? Just blows my mind
It's all down to the video game publishers really. I guess EA back then went all out and gave Eurocom a big budget and free rein to what they wanted for Nightfire. In comparison, Activision gave them as little time and budget as possible to rush them to finish Legends in a specific time frame.
Michael Barton I still don't think 007 Legends is that bad. It looked better than GoldenEye Rogue Agent and that has mediocre reviews back then. Then again Goldfinger sounded more like the actual guy in Rogue Agent than He Did in 007 Legends.
Have you thought about playing and reviewing Goldfinger 64? It's a full mod for Goldeneye 64 that turns the game into Goldfinger, with a full campaign based on the movie and new characters, weapons, multiplayer levels, etc. It's really well done, moreso than most ROM hacks.
In fairness, quite a lot more could have been wiped out. Your bank account, that one 99.9% completed game-save file which took you hours of grinding to do....
"I'll put her fingerprint on the button so she'll get the blame!" "You DO know that I had plenty of time to tell MI6 of the whole thing before I got here, Alec?" "... Bollocks..."
Calvin, the scenes with Xenia holding onto Bond's leg and then his boot reminds me of Necros in The Living Daylights. It would have been cool if there could have been a way of having her plead for her life the way Necros did as Bond cut the laces to slip his boot off. Well the two scenarios are most different so an enormous helicopter for a counterweight did not really leave time for pleading. At least the closest we get to the equivalent is Xenia's cries of "No" several times in despair realizing her helplessness. I suppose though there could have been a desperate "Help me" when she first grabs onto Bond.
I think it would be out of character for Xenia to ask for help. It's why I like how her death in the film as it's quite sudden [she only just has time to react before she is crushed on the tree].
Good to see you making videos again! Have you considered making videos about how Bond has influenced pop culture? For example: Changing trends in the films throughout the decades. How the series has shaped the 'spy' genre. How it has inspired parodies like Austin Powers and Johnny English.
This game was a letdown for me when I originally played it. I was expecting a more direct remake to the N64 version. Kinda like what Nintendo did with the GameCube remake of Metal Gear Solid. You made a lot of solid points and it's made me want to go back and revisit it. Great video and I'm so glad you're back!
Fun fact, at 6:22 you could either do that the way it was in the original game or do it like the movie and go to the vent above him and lower yourself down to him
Great review Calvin, good to see you back. I hope there is a developer secretly working on a new bond game as we speak. Gaps between movies were much easier when we had some quality games to tide us over. :)
I remember getting this for the Wii upon its original release with the special golden Wii Controller. Never gave it much of a chance before selling it. Will pick this up now on PS3 thanks to your review. I should maybe give Legends another chance too if I can get it for the right price.
I think the only issue I had with the game at the time (I had the wii version) was that it felt like Call Of Duty with a James Bond skin slapped on. I enjoyed the hell out of the multiplayer modes of the game both local and online (golden gun/paintball all the way!)
I always wondered how Alec could survive like 1000 bullets at the end, and then somehow, one bullet defeats him. It's just a bit stupid to be honest lol
Except it's not "just a bit stupid," because that one bullet only knocked him off the edge. It was falling into an explosion that killed him. This is blatant scene manipulation. So much for being "honest."
I’ve just come late to the party and played through this game for the first time, having been an avid fan of the original and still have original cart with all unlocked levels and cheat I might add 😌 Precisely my thoughts with the streets and “Train” level… “is this entire place under construction? What gives with all of the scaffolding and quarries”
Goldeneye Reloaded was the second Bond game that I owned (first was QoS on the PS2) so I do have a soft spot for it. However, while it was fun for the first few times, I can't ignore how it unnecessarily takes cues from the Call of Duty games, from the gameplay to no real mission variety and the so-so multiplayer (co-op was cool tho). Modernising Goldeneye really took away the fun away from the story and characters, to gameplay mechanics like the lack of gadgets to use. Still it's a hell of a lot better than..... 007 Legends.
There are two small advantages the Wii version has over Reloaded: -Many concrete & wooden barricades are destructible. -You can use motion controls to aim more precisely, especially peeking out the side of barricades which is impossible in Reloaded.
14:42 hey, it's still stealth if nobody's left alive to remember they saw you! And, take it from a bloodthirsty monster-beast, rampagey stealth is the best kind of stealth.
Hey calvin, you need to play quantum of solace on the PS2. It is a completely different game to the others and in my opinion one of the best bond games I've ever played. The games stupidly underrated and is a hidden gem
@@jamesfrovarp4624 the PS2 version was developed by Eurocom and there return to focusing on licensed property's contracted to them from publishers and not trying to get publishers onboard for fresh projects. PS2 version is played in third person and spends more time in Quantum's story before flashing back to Casino Royal and strangely no aim assist function but a fun game still and worth a play if you get the chance.
I haven’t played that one yet, but I get the feeling the reason it’s so underrated is because of many people’s hatred for the movie it’s based off of considering the film is one of the worst Bond films. The movie was so boring that I fell asleep during it. It was also very forgettable. I am still interested in buying the game based off of it though.
Honestly, I loved the multiplayer for this. It was no cult classic like Goldeneye 64 but a modern goldeneye game that I wish survived long enough to make it to Xbox One.
I miss those days very much! The maps were very solid, IMO better than many CoD maps and the colors and weapon renderings are just emblazoned in my memory
I loved the pants out of goldeneye reloaded. I'm a big bond fan since I was a kid, but having only a nintendo wii at the time, it was pretty incredible a James bond game came out for the wii that was actually really good! Thanks for the vid!
I had this for the Wii and didn't really care for it. This version looks much better and I'm encouraged to give the PS3 version a shot thanks to your review. Keep up the great work!
Hurray the return! 4 things to say 1. If I remember correctly reloaded goes out of its way to break stealth compared to the Wii 2. The nightclub on Wii didn’t use full models for all dancers but flat sprites that had more energy then the pretty dreary reloaded clubbers standing about 3. Why the bloody hell is Bond not wearing a hat in the Snow? Seriously a jacket and pants but they paid top bill for Daniel Craig’s likeness they need to use it ha ha 4. Bond does have a gadget: his Smart Phone it can hack, scan, and most importantly take calls! Glad to see an upload from you Mr. Dyson looking forward to 007 Legends 👌
Wishful thinking here but it would’ve been an inspired choice if they had gotten Eric Serra of the original film and Grant Kirkhope of the original game to collaborate, maybe recreate the best of both soundtracks. Add a more cinematic sound to the old N64 jams and maybe even throw in the Goldeneye Overture for good measure.
i really dont care what anyone says, this game had actually a fun campaign more fun than the original one story explanation wise/stealth gameplay tho the original one had the goofy cheats which made it so sandboxy ish and made more fun than the reloaded version in terms of replayability I didnt bother with the MP much, could just go back and play COD BO1 or MW2 Instead back in the day
I half agree with you. I agree on it being more fun stealth gameplay wise than the original, but I disagree on it having a better story than the original.
The licensing to get the game resold online on an emulation platform or remastered is a licensing nightmare. There was going to be an awesome remaster of the N64 game on XBLA developed by Rare Ltd, and it even included the ability to switch old and new graphics at 1080p 60fps. All this was revealed in released footage on the online tubes. Similar to Perfect Dark XBLA. Licensing is a major killer.
Being pissed off at government corruption, bailouts for big business and Banks, golden parachutes, and the widening financial gap between the 1% and the average citizen... Is a very valid reason to become a Supervillain
Daniel Craig while i think he shouldn't of been in this game is one of my favorite bonds since hes one of the most acurate to the books one aside from his appearance
I've been waiting for this review!!! So glad you reviewed it!!! I love this game and i enjoy it! It has it's highs and lows but its a solid game!! I love the weapon diversity and level design! Btw Sky Briggs was such a under used character, he was so cool! Anyway, thx for the vid calvin!!!
Sadly Goldeneye has to take place within the context of a recently collapsed Soviet Union and the ensuing power vacuum it created. Trevelyans motivation is also an extension of that since Ourumov himself was shocked to learn this in the film. It doesn't translate well to the 2010s.
5 years late to the party here, but better late than never. My main issue is, if you brought back Sean Connery to do From Russia With Love, why not also bring back Pierce Brosnan and Sean Bean for Goldeneye: Reloaded?
Thinking of your comment about Craig not being a very good voice actor. I think part of the problem was it just felt like he was reading another Bond actor’s lines, which he was, these lines were written for Pierce. Especially that line “No, for me.” Just the way Pierce delivered it, all the emotions, here with Craig, nothing. Monotone and reading from a script.
After beating this and Agent Under Fire recently, I think GoldenEye Reloaded is far, far superior. It doesn't have the lovable camp element that Agent Under Fire does, but the gunplay is better, the stealth mechanics are a nice addition, Craig's in it, and it's decently longer. Might be on par with Nightfire and From Russia with Love for me.
2:44 I actually love how it’s a new experience I mean yeah I wish we could get a beat by beat remake but when I think of reloaded I think of the story being retold in a more modern time
I have never played this one but I wish they could make Bond Games where you would play each Bond in every movies , when I'll be billionaire, instead of taking over the world, I'll pay Naughty Dog for this project.
Sad you didn't mention the cancelled XBLA Remake, but oh well still a great review as always. Didn't expect you to mention the HL2 Mod GoldenEye: Source but it still would've been good to spread that information around. Anyways, I really wish that the Wii version wasn't just called "GoldenEye 007" as the "Reloaded" part implies that it's supposed to be different from the original N64 game. Looking at the back of the box I was expecting "N64 Game with Daniel Craig as Bond, Updated Graphics and Modern Controls" which was basically what XBLA was going to be except keep the original actors. There's so many changes to the story of both the original game & movie that they should've just made it more original but this game was the result of the XBLA Remake being cancelled so I guess they just _had_ to make a bunch of changes. I really want to know why Boris wasn't in the story, he's one of the characters you can pick in Multiplayer but for some reason he is completely absent during the Campaign despite being important to the original story. A few points I will reward to the game: The multiplayer is still really fun. All the programming & graphics are done really well even for the Wii version. Speaking of the Wii version, the motion controls for aiming were really good but not the QTEs. The changes to the story still work, as in they're only a problem when you know what the original story was. They don't cause major plot-holes or anything like that, in fact sometimes work in the game's favor like when Bond is at Severnaya when the weapon is activated. Overall this game is still a pretty good game, but it just doesn't feel a whole lot like a Bond game as a result of the common problems with Craig's Bond before Skyfall that you already pointed out. Could've been better, but it also could've been a lot worse. The only "benefit" of this game having so many changes to the story & gameplay is that I wouldn't have found out about GoldenEye: Source so I can't say I wish this wasn't never made but I still would love to see XBLA finished or redone (as it is over a decade old now) so we can have a more faithful remake of the N64 Game. There is a fan-project to recreate the game in Unreal Engine 4 in time for the 25th Anniversary so there is that to look forward to.
Xbox Live Arcade, just google the remake because it looked amazing and there was even a 30-minute video uploaded over a year and a half ago that showed off a few levels and new things like gadgets not requiring you to pull out your watch to select them & even the ability to make characters the same height in multiplayer.
this developer also made the N64 version of The World is Not Enough which is probably the closest thing you'll get to the original GoldenEye (outside Perfect Dark).
I loved the N64 version of The World Is Not Enough. It had tons of weapons and gadgets and it had some awesome levels both from the film and some new ones like the foot chase through London's docklands and the London Underground based level. The voice work is pretty good too, which helped the game stand even more for me.
When I played _Quantum of Solace_ the way it went into third-person perspective whenever you went into cover reminded me of the then-recent _Rainbow Six Vegas_ games, which did something similar. Mind you, if it had been put into _Goldeneye Reloaded_ I wonder whether people who had played the original would have complained about it (although because they did not add it, we will probably never know...)?
when your control shakes at the one moment at the arms fair, i think the guy tabs bonds arm in the game, cause i have played this game many times back in the day
A remake of the original N64 game is virtually impossible. Nintendo owns the source code due to them funding the game, Microsoft owns Rare, the 007 game rights are currently for sale, and God knows how willing whoever buy them will be to negotiate. Microsoft and Nintendo have been able to negotiate when it comes to other Rare games, though. The Banjo HD remastered are running on an N64 emulator on a Microsoft console and in turn Microsoft let Nintendo rerelease Rare’s Donkey Kong games on the Wii’s Virtual Console. In fact, a XBLA port of Goldeneye was planned and in development but Nintendo pulled the plug because honestly, they got the bad end of the deal where they would get the original Goldeneye for Virtual Console due to the Wii’s weaker hardware. Now that the Switch is pretty much on par with Xbox One a remaster or remake would be possible on all consoles. However with the game rights being a mystery, who knows what could happen.
It all depends on the person but i typically like trying to stealth my way through even if it doesn't matter because if i succeed i get an odd satisfied feeling
11:25 Wasted opportunity to use DragonForce as the BGM at that point :D My main problem with the game is that it's just way too much like Call of Duty. Bond games used to feel unique, but not in the modern era anymore. After NightFire, which I consider still the best Bond game ever made, it was all downhill for me.
@@matiasgazzarri4959 I sadly agree with you. I wish there was a GoldenEye 007 game where it had similar gameplay and same graphics as Reloaded, but completely tied to the movie by having it be a modernized remake of the N64 game and having 007 modeled after Pierce Brosnan and having him voice him.
pretty middle of the road title. The game play felt generic for the most part (aka almost exactly like call of duty), although there were some nice touches and little nods to the original game/film. The change of cast also worked against it (this couldn't really be helped as they obviously couldn't weren't going to use Brosnan or Sean Bean at the time it was developed) and i really feel like it could have been a lot better, overall id pretty much only recommend it to the hardcore bond fans.
I don't get why they changed the order of the film in the game, statue Park is somehow after archives, streets and the train level? They should be in Cuba not Africa as well
I tried to replay the original Wii-version ten years later. Man, just like 99% of Wii games it doesn't hold up at all! At the time the controls were pretty good and the multiplayer was solid, but in 2020 Wii GoldeyEye is cluncky and head-ache inducing. I should try to find the Reloaded version....
I remember getting this for the wii, along with the golden controller and oddjob hat tshirt that says ''Cheater'' lol. Thought it was decent enough a game
