After some discussion in The Geek Group IRC, i thought i would make this video of one of my turntables, i used to use 2 Garrard SP25 MKIII turntables for the disco i ran many years ago, but this turntable is a lot better quality, and used for home hi-fi, i currently have this set up on an under-bench slide out system in my studio/workshop.

I was watching your video and noticed you kept touching the idler wheel and you should never touch that grease gets on it and can get absorbed into the inner layers of the rubber . and then you have to clean it . this is a very nice turntable and it should be treated gentley and it will last forever . these units were made to last and todays crap is just that all crap and I use a lenco and garrard those along with dual are the best in my opinion . keep the videos coming they are great

Very useful video. Thanks to the presenter - you are a star! I have one of these and this reminded me of the innards and how to release the platter. Mine was tight and I was not sure how this was fitted.

Thanks for the reply, yes it's a great deck for home use, i like heavy, well balanced turntables which keep the speed constant :)

Thanks sparky. Turns out it was the transit bolts on the motor were still in position. I have removed them and it’s now nice and quiet

i have 2 L75 one i have ever out of a electronic shop as a DIY kit in 1975 en the other one in 1996 found in bad state but now restored in almost new condition.tip do not slide the speed control without the turntable running, you are dragging the rubber wheel sideways over the plate en spindel.
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 5 лет назад
It's great that you have restored a GL75 Actually, you should change speed without it running, in the off position the idler is pulled away from the motor and turntable (unless you have lost a bracket that pulls it down from the turntable) No harm should come to it if changed during use, as the motor shaft is mostly tapered, not stepped.

Another quick question. Any suggestions on making a "make shift" arm that supports the anti-skating weight? I am missing the coiled arm, weight and the clamp that holds it on to the tone arm assembley
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 3 года назад
On the tone arm, there's a straight bar with lines which goes into a hole on the arm The coiled arm fits into a hole in the base pillar, mine looks like a stiff stretched spring (it's probablu original) I didn't have the bias weight for mine, so i have a small (m6) nut on a thread

Hi Sparky great video btw. A question the tone arm V blocks ; how do I know when it is time to change out the V Blocks on the tone arm?
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 3 года назад
I don't know, but i guess the v blocks get worn at the bottom in time, haven't chhanged mine I came across several videos about the tone arm, and how to change the blocks Search for 'lenco tone arm' and there's a whole li9st of vids.

Yes I did see the videos and that prompted my question as to why and when they need changing. , I just put an album on now and it plays well . I will leave well alone until I notice something unusual. Thanks

Hi Sparky. Do you have any experience with the L78MKII? I have a couple of problems with the autostop, and the plastic elbow touches the idler linkage causing a vibrating noise at 33. Quite a conundrum.

I'm not familiar with that one, but while looking for info i came across this forum thread www.lencoheaven.net/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=m6n4d8inhs443gdo354nik89m0&topic=2179.0

Hi Sparky. Great video. Very interesting and very informative on the L75. Carry on the great work! I have acquired an A Goldring Lenco GL 85.. This is a belt drive but beautiful turntable and mechanics are slightly different with a smaller motor , transformer and an integrated circuit board . Needs a full refurbishment and your video is a good lesson in the mechanics. Have you worked on the GL 85 by any chance. ?
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 9 лет назад
Sorry i haven't, that's the one with the electronic strobe speed control.? In general, if you have to clean the drive spindle etc, only use a scourer if possible, any sort of sanding can reduce the diameter. oil should ideally be 'sewing machine' oil, and very thin grease for bearings
@baijanshahzada1119
@baijanshahzada1119 3 года назад
Hi Sparky. I Just got my hands on a Lenco L75 not a GL75. When I remove the platter the shaft does not come off with the platter. The shaft remains on the TT... is that something I should be concerned with? The platter slips on and off easily but I can not take the shaft out and examine the bottom of the shaft where the pivot point ball bearing is.
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 3 года назад
I'm assuming it's basically the same construction, on the underside on the side of the shaft tube is a small screw, be aware that it is very short and can easily get lost.
@baijanshahzada1119
@baijanshahzada1119 3 года назад
Thanks for the quick reply. So in your video when you removed the platter with the shaft attached you had removed the small screw from the underside already? Do you think I damaged anything removing the platter from the shaft itself?
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 3 года назад
@@baijanshahzada1119 The top of the shaft is a taper i think, as long as you lifted it evenly you should be fine Just check the run out (wobble) while its running Easiest way to remove the platter from the shaft is to lift it and place several wedges around it to provide support, then hit the top of the shaft gently with a hammer (use a wood block on the top of the shaft to prevet damage) Don't hit too hard, you don't want to dislodge it, not drive it through the base

Hi,do you know how do I replace inside the armtone, head wiring?They stay in there since 1973.Thanks.
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 9 лет назад
All tonearms are different, but basically disconnect the wires at each end, remove the tonearm, there's usually a couple of screws at the pivot, you should be able to carefully get access to the wires, solder the new wires to the old ones so when you pull the old ones out, it will pull the new ones through.

Great vid. I’ve been looking for info on how to sort out a problem with my LENCO GL75 but can’t find anything. Maybe you can help. The motor hums acoustically and on high volume it it can be heard through the speakers. It’s as if a component is touching and transmitting the vibration from the motor. Everything else works fine. It’s such a disappointment when silent parts of music are disturbed by the bloody humming of the motor! Any ideas anyone?
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 4 года назад
Make sure the bearings on the motor etc are oiled (3 in 1 oil or other light oil) The turntable should have spring mounts to isolate it from the wood base. this should reduce any mechanical noise. The hum you get through the speakers is most likely a ground loop. Carefully check the part i talk about the audio connections, the screen of the audio should NOT be connected to the turntable chassis, but the chassis should be connected to mains ground.

@@sparkyprojects hi. Great video. I have the mains ground connected to the motor. Will that serve? It has a contact crimped and is fitted to one of the motor screws.
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 3 года назад
@@simonheffernan1767 For electrical safety, yes, that's fine Though i would also recommend connecting a wire to the metal chassis, the motor is mounted on rubber,

hi interesting video thank you very much. I've just bought a LG75 with a mounting plate from out of a radio gram. all there is to it is what you have shown us. Will i need a transformer as well as a plinth? Thanks
@sparkyprojects
@sparkyprojects 6 лет назад
As long as the motor is set for 240v (i assume you are UK), then no, the motor runs direct from the mains, the cartridge should be wired to cables to plug directly into your amplifier. When you wire the audio cables, be sure to only connect them to the cartridge wires, don't connect the screens to turntable ground, otherwise you may get hum.
@MrRichymil

@@sparkyprojects Hi my turntable has arrived in the post today from eBay. I have to make a plinth for it as it was taken out of an old radiogramam . It looks fine a wonderful GL 75, however the four mounting bolts on the mounting plate that go through springs have been bent a bit in tranzit. I'd like to send you a photo to ask your advice but I don't know how I could do that, should I just bend them back it looks possible? Also the wiring for the cartridge his just two of what looks like the original wires and I don't know how I'm going to connect them up to RCA plugs. Obviously soldier them, but as the wire looks so unlike interconnect I'm unsure as which is negative and positive and so on.

If you look @10:44 you can see where the power cable is wired, Basically it should go to the switch and motor, The RCA cables go to the tagstrip. Go ahead and send me a photo sparky-projects.co.uk/contact.html
