Golf club basics blades vs cavity back irons. Mark Crossfield and Coach Lockey dicuss the difference between bladed and cavity back golf clubs. Does loft rule everything or does the technology each manufacturer put into their clubs make a massive difference to performance. What are the best golf club irons you can buy for your game. Everyone wants to play blades, should we all be buying them?

You forgot to factor in the satisfaction of nailing a blade and how good they look in the bag. If performance is similar ......

Probably the extra spin on the MB will end up giving you the same peak high you get with the APEX with that 2° launch dif. Good video guys! Tech doesn't matter to this, just loft.

Excellent Mark, one of the best films you have made recently. Challenge perceptions, devise a practical test, present the data and hey presto. I really hope this film gets a million views because our fellow golfers need to break free from the general mis-information. I am going to watch it again, "tracking CG what?"

Great to see videos from when you boys were in the same room again! Once again you’ve shown how minimal any tech actually is, and I love it! Buy new and fancy if you want, but it’s still up to you to hit it properly. Thanks as always!

The word 'forgiveness' for golf irons gets banded round the Internet like SGI irons are going to steer your errant shots back to the pin and make up for the fact that you dug the club in an inch before the ball. Refreshing to see this being challenged (as you have done before) I tested and bought blades as my first clubs and never felt they held me back. But due to the relentless reiteration of nearly all sources stating SGI must be played unless your a pro, I bought a second hand set of forgiving irons and played the 2 side by side. My inconsistency shone through equally with both types of clubs. The only difference being I could feel mishits better on the blades, so if one deserves the 'game improvement' moniker it would be the blade.

Couldn't agree more! Started with a set of Tour Edge Jmax GI irons. Unexpectedly won a $15 ebay bid on an older set of Mizuno T-Zoid True blades. I'm approximately 16 handicap and have been hitting the blades better than I ever hit my GI irons with no more shanks than usual (although the shanks are a bit more dramatic with the blades). Got my first eagle a few weeks ago after landing a big draw/hook on the green with my 5 iron (could never hit a draw/hook with the GI irons).

No club or ball is going to help if you’re shanking or laying sod those are the result of major swing flaws. You don’t need to feel bad shots off the clubface, the ball flight will tell you everything you need to know. It’s not like you can’t feel mishits with game improvement irons. The sweet spot is the same size, the cavity back doesn’t help a solid strike. Perimeter weighting helps deliver more clubhead mass to the ball on mishits. You still feel bad shots and see bad shots but you might still clear the bunker or the water. Common sense says minimizing the effect of a bad swing will help you shoot lower scores. The laws of physics say perimeter weighting will help reduce the effect of a bad shot. Both clubs will perform the same on square strikes. Blades can add control to a pro golfers game, they add only punishment to a handicap golfer. That’s why they’re not recommended.

Actually with mishits the results are even worse with so called game improvement clubs, but as you said, propaganda and brainwashing in golf is strong.

Something that I’ve suspected for a while that only makes more since with time. Golf OEMs are in the business of making profits. New “tech” irons always have a different marketing strategy to advertise perceived benefits. More speed, more forgiveness, or whatever the current catch phrase is today. Largely the buyer is unaware of loft jacking, and this video does a great job of exposing the OEMs for this (6iron VS 7iron). Also, jacked lofts cause gapping problems not only on the backend of the bag (PW-gap- sand w, etc), but also in the long irons. Now, hybrids are replacing 2-3 clubs in a players bag, plus their fairway woods.. at $100-200 /Ea USD for a wedge (because now you need 4 additional wedges to gap for your 42* Pw) and hybrids, your standard complete set of clubs will cost you north of $3k USD. While blades largely just change the looks of the iron… There is no surprise OEMs sell fewer of them than gi irons and clubs. I recognize that I am biased because like you I started on blades, learned how to swing a club, and now play them well - but the whole, “you shouldn’t be playin blades” is just a marketing plan to get you to buy more clubs… golf was played at a very high level for decades without, it’s only changing now because there’s more money involved for OEM to sell more clubs - they sell more by chasing new tech. My Rant’s over on a dead thread. Peace, love and Greens in regulation.

IMHO, that's one of the best analysis video I saw you guys do. I think it's Kevin Na who said earlier this year he was dumb to ever play Blades... and to me, you put some science behind those words. I think it rings even more true to mid handicappers like me. If the distance is pretty much the same, if the sweet spot is bigger (or at least the CBs are much forgiving on missed strikes), if I have a two degree advantage on launch... why would I choose something that makes me less confident behind the ball? I agree there's feel and personal choice, but based on science? I just don't see why. Great job guys, from the other side of the Atlantic

Francis Patenaude I have the opposite feeling when playing blades. I feel more confident looking down at a blade because they make me feel like more of a player, like someone who doesn’t need the help from chunky cavities. I went from a 15 handicap down to 3 with blades in the bag.

Ryan M 100% agree here! If same loft gives you more height and steeper decent, with same distance that’s a win for a lot of ppl because you are then given a choice of same distance and more stopping power and or same height and such with more distance by leveraging d-plane. I don’t know anyone anymore that argues the tech drives the distance more than the loft, but the tech may give you more flexibility. And I do say MAY because it doesn’t always play out the way for every player.

Love your content! One piece of this puzzle that I would love to see is how different the interaction is between the CB and Blades on different lies. It is interesting to see that the numbers are nearly identical off a mat but would they be out of the rough? Sand? If the assumption is that the player is always in the fairway, sure who cares which one you pick but if the interaction with different lies are significantly different thats a BIG deal for the average golfer.

I bought my first set of blades this year (cobra MB’s) I was terrified at first but after hitting them there’s really not much of a difference if any when it comes to difficulty. If you hit the ball relatively solid most of the time you are more than capable of playing blades. Plus they look sooo much better than a cavity back. I’m never going back haha

Confidence is everything! I purchased Taylormade M4 irons, knowing that the lofts were a club stronger than my previous set. However, the reason I did was that in fitting the drop off on a bad hit was only 10 yards vs 30 yards on my old set. Also, who doesn’t like standing at a par 3 with one club less than their mates.

Blades offer consistent feel and no ‘hot shots’ - depth of shot always similar. BUT, big feel is short clubs in to the green and chip and run shots, you just don’t get that chip and run that runs way past the hole! I love to see lofts etched in to the sole, forget the number on the bat. And good idea is to put your length on the club with a sharpie if you can so you take the guessing out of the equation. Forged muscle is always great compromise👍 great video guys!

Now that I play blades. I react differently then when I play my ping G25s. I am more defensive with my G25 because they peak height sooner. I fell like I am relying more on decent angle vs spin. My callaway razor x md blades peak height later in flight and seem to stop/spin more. My miss is on the shorter side. I fell like I have better control with the blades.

Mark, I really like this subject and great work, let’s remember though, you are comparing “ideal” “centered” hits. You may find even more loft protection for the techy clubs on the off center hits. As you know, that’s why the manufactures tend to use the 9 zone club face location tests. Also, you have a club face that is bigger, the center in relation to where the club touched the ground will be slightly, albeit fractionally, different on the two clubs. Also, my guess on speed is that the blade is a more familiar look to you, generating a more confident and quicker swing.

I've seen Gc quad read clubhead speed differently between iron models so it's most likely just a different read. Most good fitters rely on ball speed reading more than clubhead speed because it can be read slightly different depending the shape of the head.

@@MarkCrossfield Great test! Your thesis seems to validate what I have found out on the course. My game improved from mid 80's to mid 70's this year when I went from Titleist AP1's to Titleist T-100's. The fitter was leery, but hey, the results don't lie. I feel my dispersion is much tighter with the T-100's. I could care less what number is on the bottom of the club, I just want to hit the yardage I know I can with the club. Now, I have just ordered a Titleist 620 combo set. 4,5 and 6 in the CB and 7,8,9 and P in the MB. Not expecting the same drop in scoring, but looking for better shot shaping.

When I start playing golf 40 years ago I played a set of Wilson Staff blades didn’t call them blades just golf clubs. When I looked at bigger/fatter clubs what we would call game improvement now I felt like I would just chunk them into the ground and the Wilsons gave me a sense of confidence that I would have a better strike. Nowadays marketers and some reviewers want to tell you what to think. This shows me no matter what the club it still is just the golfer and rather than looking at ourselves we would rather blame the equipment and chase getting better by buying new gear instead of practice. The whole idea that some magic sticks will change everything.

No it's the way gc quad reads the clubhead speed. Different shaped clubheads are read differently by gc quad sometimes. Clubhead speed on GC quad isn't as reliable as ball speed reading is.
@MrUlfdub
@MrUlfdub 4 года назад
A 6 iron head weighs less than a 7 iron head. Given the same length shaft, the 6 iron will have a lighter swingweight. This is most likely a factor in the faster swingspeed you experienced. The shaft, if identical, would also play slightly stiffer in the 6. Keep these clubmaking basics in mind when doing a similar test. You MUST swingweight the clubs identically for the purest data.
@kourt2469
@kourt2469 4 года назад
Would love to see you test a 4-5 iron blade against a similar lofted game improvement club. The lower the loft the more a miss hit is punished. In my testing when you get to around 40 degrees loft, perimeter weighting isn't measurably helping. But in the low lofts it absolutely is measurable. Also you need to actually measure the CG on those clubs. Pull the head and measure it Because most blades actually have a LOWER cg than cavity backs, all the weight is in the lower part of the club in a blade and the main factor in cg is face height and blades almost ALWAYS have a lower face height than a cavity back. It's easy to measure just pull the heads and balance them on a needle and mark it.

The strike location is VERY interesting. What I would want to know here is the peak height and decent angle. Question to Seve Ballesterous - How do you hit the ball lower? I hit it 2 grooves lower on the face. That means technically you hit the MB higher because they were = except the strike, unless the CG is 3 grooves higher, but I think it's only 1 maybe 2 grooves higher. That would be fun to know.
@TexasGolfer
@TexasGolfer 4 года назад
Striking high/low on the face. The Apex is a little heavier club-head than the MB. When swinging the club, the heavier club will be impacted more by the physics of the swing than the MB. When swinging the physics will want to pull the heavier club closer to the ground. Makes total sense. To test this; take those same 2 clubs and find the head weight difference. You already have the baseline data. Next just add the weight difference to the blade in the form of lead tape and match up the numbers again.

I'd have loved if you'd have shown the actual flight profiles of both clubs. Yes, one launches 2° higher than the other one, but is the peak hight the same? What about descent angle? Maybe the blade launches slower but it lands quicker, no? Would that make a real difference on the course? Maybe it'd be a good test to take both on a par 3, hit five white balls with one and 5 yellow ones with the other, plant a camera greenside to see if there's any difference in the landing.

Was only thinking about this yesterday, power clubs with their strong lofts seem ridiculous when you look at the number on the bottom but what if you just play the loft and ignore, should everyone be playing the higher moi clubs for the higher launch (didn't know why it launched higher until this video, very interesting) and from your results being so similar you could argue everyone should for the bit of help and for some confidence inspiring shape. Trade off I suppose is, what does that 300rpm difference change to when the lie causes spin to drop off. Once again, regardless of all the tech, just shows strike is king and always will be.

Are u a player who plays in a straight (a to b) line basically straight. Or are u a person of abstract thinking where geometric line become a game aka workability personally I would take the blades and practice for confidence and invest more time verse some weekender few rounds a summer that goes out with his mates and hit straight balls And at that point apex might be the choice. This has nothing to do with product performance just how a person might perceive the game ~just a thought~ 🙂 also love the new video format u guys are putting out is stellar keep it up

Brilliant test Gents, really helps cut the marketing BS. Given the iron byron average of dead middle (kudos Mark 😂), would be interested in seeing a repeat test with toe and heel strikes to see the return there.

Could the swing speed difference be attributed to the physical differences of the club heads? Technically a 6 iron should be lighter than a 7 iron, and the Apex will have a larger overall profile. Both of these differences have an effect on the swingers ability to move the club. The same amount of effort put in to the swing will produce different club head speeds. The lighter and smaller (more aerodynamic) club-head will be slightly faster (~2mph?).

Mark. I started playing blades last year and my club head speed increased, and decreases when I switch back to the cavities. The blades have a lighter head which I believe is the variable.

My take on strike position: With the apex having a wider sole, it’s easier to think it will bail you out when taking more turf and not digging. Therefore you can swing into the turf more and move that strike up. Therefore you are adding launch because there is more loft higher up the face giving you the launch characteristics. Whereas a blade has a narrower sole so “picking it clean” is more a priority and taking more turf can be more of an issue due to its tendency to dig causing that lower strike. With a lower strike, the gear effect will cause the Club to deflect downward and the add spin which is where you see that extra couple hundred revs I’d spin. Your thoughts Mark on my theory?
@kourt2469
@kourt2469 4 года назад
There isn't "more loft up the face" an iron is completely flat. Hitting a little bit higher on the face affects launch because you're striking slightly above the center of gravity, vs a lower strike is hit below center of gravity so it launches lower.

Mark, id realky like you to do one more test to add to this one! Find an older callaway iron, like from 2002- tungsten titanium big bertha and compare to the apex. The tu/ti has extremely low cg without having strong lofts. Would be interested to see how they compare, and if “technology” is really an explanation for the strong lofts.

Be great to see the difference with poor heel and toe strikes. Whether the apex would launch much higher then 🤔🤔🤔

The manufacturer is there to sell to the players that have for the most part begun their golf journey. They can see themselves getting better and better and the marketing takes them in. Once they have reached consistency, they know a brand new club/set has little differences

What would be interesting as a follow up, no doubt you could hit toes and heels, is whether tech is actually helping for those off centre hits across those 2 clubs... lots of marketing around forgiveness, especially cavity back clubs like I have (G410), and it's always assumed it is the case, but how much difference would I actually see given matched clubs as you have (loft, etc), between say mine and blueprint irons, in distance, etc?
@kourt2469
@kourt2469 4 года назад
Performance drop definitely happens but not very measurable when you're hitting a club above 35 degrees of loft. Once you get to 40 degrees of loft there's almost no difference because it's such a glancing blow with that loft that perimeter weighting doesn't really help. But when you're hitting 4-5-6 irons there is definitely a noticably drop off in performance on mis hits. Problem is people only test 7 irons when they do these tests.

Mark Might it be beneficial to do a vid on the history of the cavity back v blade. Just looked and the ping eye 2 cavity backs that everyone coveted in the 80,s had a 7 iron lofted at 36 degrees. That’s more loft (2 degrees) than the callaway 7 iron MB. Why the drive to loft down and what does the modern tech do to make a 6 supposedly fly like a 7. It looks like modern blades have lofted down too but not as much.

I wish I had indefinite resources, so I can create a new bag. I’d do my best to stay Callaway. Loved those Apex MB’s. Loved em. But I’ve also fallen in love with TM P790’s. I’d love to blend a new set with those two sets.

A selling point on the distance improvement irons is “they have a bigger sweet spot”. Any thoughts? Given that handicaps have barely changed over the years, are these irons actually helping anyone in a meaningful way?

I would probably find myself swinging softer as well and allowing the more friendly apex iron to do the work. However, the blade clubface just feels like it requires a good thump to strike it well, and so I would instinctively raise my speed a little

This is a dose of reality… and great video, but isn’t the game improvement clubs about the hits that are not consistently hit in sweet spot of the club… I am kinda of wondering what the comparison looked like when you were 2mph slower with the AP2? What if you didn’t notice the swing speed difference, would you have the same opinion about those clubs….

Hello Chaps... The two boxes of Srixon balls on your desk. Question. I think the one in the back is the AD333. Is the Q Star Tour the U.S. branded equivent of the AD333? Are they the same ball, compression etc. I saw a very in depth ball review on PXGs robot done in the UK ( @ Today's Golfer ) and the AD333 was the best value / performance for the average ball speed golfer but can't seem to find them in the US. Would it be the Q Star regular or the Q Star Tour do you think?. Figured I asked you guys are close to Cleveland / Srixon boys now... Cheers M8s

I can’t tel you how many times I tel folks getting fit to try Different sole widths! Sole width and how it makes people react and change their angles is MASSIVELY important in a fit. My opinion, is that the high face strikes were a reaction to the sole width and perceived bounce more than anything. Ultimately, loft always wins and contrary to modern fitting, I believe most golfers need more loft and spin than they are generally getting from the game improvement clubs on the market today.

my main problem with the techy clubs is this; if the 7 iron is 30 degrees, what loft has the PW got. I have always thought you had a 4 degree progression through the lofts. If that was the case you would have a PW at 42 degrees. which is ridiculous

The only problem i see would be that the head weights wouldn't be right? The mb 6i they used would not be weighted right for the shorter length shaft, or vice versa for the apex 7i

Are there similar differences between a super distance iron and hollow bodied or cavity backs?
@mckesma
@mckesma 4 года назад
Do the clubs have the same bounce? Could that contribute to impact position? Downside of the apex is you have fewer clubs in the bag at the shorter end, so distance gaps will be bigger between clubs. Logically you hit more shots from 150 yards than 200, so bigger gaps at that end will probably mean you are constantly trying to take distance off, which in turn may lead to poorer strikes among inconsistent players

Love the video! But are we not talking about consistency with distancing with off centre hits which is where the tech comes into its own! Mark your great at being consistent with your strike how about coach gives it a go and we see averages over say 20-30 hits with each? Could the weight of the club be making the difference to your speed at the start? 👍
@owenrivard8832
@owenrivard8832 4 года назад
For someone as consistent as you I wouldn't expect a difference because you can find the centre of the blade all the time. I'm almost certain a high or even mid handicapper would have massive drop offs with the blade when they miss the centre. Yes the lofts are what gives the increase in distance but miss the centre with equal lofts and I'm certain the cavity back will go further. I'd love to see this test done when strike is all over the face

Great entertaining video and great technical content which is why i watch. The most telling thing and confirming a view I have. The search and pursuit of optimal spin id frankly a bit of a laugh. Ýou said it Revs per MINUTE do not equate to much when the ball time in flight and spin rates at launch mid launch and falling out of the air at end of flight over a shorter time span does not make a paramount difference for most golfers. Especially when you dial in non tour strike consistency. Thanks you have confirmed my bias and view. Thats why I don't pursue "ultimate" spin values. However consistent spin from good cavity forged with repeatable spin is desirable. Cheers
