This is a video of how I replaced the high level brake light for my golf gti mk5 (2004-2008). VW recommends that the rear spoiler is removed and repainted at a cost of £400. This DIY is handy as all you need is a screw driver, the replacement light (1K6-945-097-F) and a spare 10 minutes!

Just used your method to change the high level brake light on our MK5 R32 and all I can say is THANK YOU! Even down to the part number on the box! You saved a family a lot of money.

Mully Thank you for commenting! About to have to do this on mine was not having luck finding anyone anywhere who confirmed it could be done on an R32.... how was it?

I did this earlier to my own MK5 GTi. The led strip was only barely lighting up and the car failed a safety check over here cos of it. It feels so wrong doing it but having watched your video and a few others, I was able to muster up the courage to go for it. Thanks for the video mate 👍

Why the downvotes? I just did this to my mk5 and it worked, and it was on sale on ecstuning as well! I failed my inspection because of this light and the mechanic wanted to send me to a VW dealer because he couldn't do the job because it required cutting the spoiler off. That would have cost a shit ton of money no doubt, THANK YOU!

Yes i read somewhere on Forum that the bill for this reparation at VW Service costed 700 €. Crazy

Yes why the down votes.. Good point indeed.. Sometimes repair does lack all finesse, but if its the only option then get on with it. This video has obviously saved a load of folks time and money and made the roads a safer place.

ive never done my own vehicle work before. getting my gti safetied out of province has been a nightmare. stealereship said they had to replace spoiler, rear window, and potentially damage the paint on my Fahrenheit. i did this with a screwdriver and 20 minutes. thank you so much!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes you just have to get in there.. So much better to be shown in this case than have to write a description.... Thanks for the video..

Thanks for this video. It helped me to replace the third brake light on my R32. It has already been replaced by VW back in 2011 (by cutting of the spoiler) but after 10 years some LED`s got damaged so I wanted a fully working brake light.

I used two people and it came out all in one peice!! 5 Min. Have one person start on the right side and hold it back a bit and then you can just go along the top when both screw driver get to the edge it will pop out!!!! Thanks Man. My old light was still working but it was dim???? New one nice a bright.

Hated this video but after more research worked out that you have to remove the whole spoiler, replace the light then re-attach/glue the spoiler. In Australia this is $300+ dollars if done with proper parts via a professional. Not sure if I can hack at it, might just leave it not working (easier)

Nice clear video Make sure you buy genuine as the fakes are poor quality and poor fit Some sellers even sell without the cable attached

The only question remains, is it still waterproof after removing the rubbing grommet? I am worried that water will get inside the car.

2 years on and no issues to date!

@@HIXNN I tried to remove the wire with the connector, but unfortunately the rubber case tore off, but thankfully the wires didn't tear off with it, otherwise I have to remove the spoiler. I cut off the connector and soldered the wires with the light bar and then wrapped it with electric tape and clipped it in. It works now at least and hopefully the tape will hold....

Of course, use plastic lever . Special car ones available quite cheap. Or use light plastic lever, gently push lever between light and frame of car its held in with 3 clips on top and below. Do go to one side push in n gentle slide across n lever it out.

The light is already dead and going into the trash. This strategy is cheap and easy to do. Save yourself $70 shop time at an approved repairer.
