Golf Mk7 leak in boot lid/tailgate fix

After rain or washing the car water would get inside the boot lid trim and run out from the light bulb access panel or from the trim by the rear window. This was caused by the boot release handle drain tube draining water inside the boot lid. The drain hose has a grommet at the end which had become broken so that the end of the tube was loose within the boot lid. A new tube was purchased for a few quid and cut to a slightly longer length than the original.
20 minutes work to fix.
Update April 2022. The grommet at the end of the tube split again! I purchased a new tube and found that the part has been updated to a much more flexible pipe with the grommet moulded onto the tube. Hopefully this one will last.
The part number is 510-827-861-A

Done. Very fiddly lining up the all 10 clips and the side trims we tricky too. My grommet on the bottom of the plastic pipe had perished and the end of the pipe was actually inside the tailgate - hence the ingress. The pipe wasn't blocked. Cut the new pipe with about 2mm slack, pushed the grommet in nicely and a tiny cable tie just gently on the plastic drain elbow, drains perfectly now. Rear tail light cluster foam gaskets were ok, water tested those....easy stuff if those gaskets start leaking, and no need to remove anything other than those pop out flaps that allow you to change the bulbs but the gaskets are ok for now. The pipe I fitted is now rubber, and has a much more substantial lip moulded into the bottom of it. It's not even really a grommet anymore, more like a fluted design with a meatier lip on it. Total cost...£6.54....I work for VW lol

The little grommet attached to that tube on my Mk7 went missing a few months ago. The dealership replaced it with a rubber stopper that turned out to be solid and not connected to the tube at all. Since then, I suspect my hatch has been slowly filling up with water. Today, it all came rushing out when I opened the hatch. Your video explains what has happened perfectly. Hopefully the dealer will do a proper replacement when I have it in for service. In the mean time, I've installed a straw that connects to the tube and extends past the edge of the hatch. Hopefully this will allow for sufficient drainage until the dealer can fix it properly.

For anybody new with this problem, booked mine in today and I've been told it is covered by the original manufacturer warranty if you still have some left.

Thanks for video Paul - Great to spot what looks like a common problem!!! (and fix), Mine is same as yours. I suspect dozens of these cars will now be leaking but unless anybody looks in the boot they will have no idea until it rusts, and floor falls out!!! Such a pity for a great car to be let down by such a tiny design failure. Also the many cars driving round with wet boots will start to stink.

Alan Cooney only really noticed mine by chance but Jesus there was a lot of water in there! The windows were steaming up a lot so I thought to look and hey ho the grommet is missing. Going to do it myself!!

Hi. Thanks for this - it really helped sort out the problem with our Golf7. It’s a low mileage 2014 car that we bought last August and we didn’t realise there was a problem until the back seat was wet to sit on. It’s obviously been leaking into the boot for years as the tools/jack are rusty, the carpet soaked and the rear seat is mouldy and like a fully wet sponge. Speaking to the dealer we bought it from to replace the rear seat as it’s probably beyond hope. Thanks again - I really appreciate the help with this.

Apparently there is 2 vents behind the back bumper that can also cause water to accumulate in the boot about 40 euro to replace them excluding labour.

Mine was fixed this week by VW under warranty, no problems. Grommet was missing and water ran out of the back of the tail lights when you opened the hatch.

Thanks for the video. I have a used 2017 GTI with the same problem, and I always wonder about that hole. Good to know that there should be a grommet there. Hopefully it will be covered under warranty.

I have had this problem also and it was the Trim Flaps around the light enclosures.

Interesting - I have the same issue but for me, the pipe is completely missing. The grommet is still there though... So that would explain why my tailgate lights have all corroded and stopped working. VW take no responsibility for it. Ideal!

Jake did you find a fix for this? I noticed my boot carpet very wet so did my research and came across this video. I do have a rubber grommet in place but it's a closed one and no pipe attached. I cannot work out how the water is getting in!
@Thundertome
@Thundertome 3 года назад
@@Stuartyh7 Yep the previous owner smashed the rear bumper knocking through the air duct located between the bumper and the chassis. They had the bumper repaired but didn't replace the cracked duct. VW replaced the duct and all the corroded wiring under warranty paid for by my finance company.

I’m just about to try fix mine, remember there’s 4x torx screws to take out before you yank the main bit off! I’m going to see if it’s possible to fix by just partially taking the trim off , rather than the plastic round the window etc.
@paulslater6597
@paulslater6597 5 лет назад
The plastic around the window is the easy bit to take off and should be removed before taking the main part off. Start at the top of the rear window. Good luck and I hope it fixes your problem.

Thanks for the info. Very informative. Fingers crossed I’ll be able to sort mine. What is the code for the part or would it be a generic code for all vw golf’s. Apologies I’m not too technical minded myself

Main dealer where I live quoted me a price of approx 700 euro to troubleshoot where the water is getting in. Parts excluding labour only comes to less than 50 euro. Thought he was taking the p#ss.

I got a Mk6. I have removed the trunk panel. It was a hard job to get that removed. Now I shall put the panel in place again. In what order did you mount it? Did you start with the inner left and right, against the window or did you started with the clips in front. I have tried to start with the inner left and right corner, but I can’t get it pressed into the slot. Do you have some advice how to start mount it back again?

Thanks Paul, I've been trying to work out where the water has come from and can see that my problem is the same as yours. Can I ask where the other end of the tube connects to?
@paulslater6597
@paulslater6597 6 лет назад
Hi Tom, It connects to the bottom of the boot release handle. Once you take the trim off the boot lid you will easily see where it connects.

Questionable design. Should really have lasted the car’s life. Not as if it has a hard job! Think vw sometimes go over the top with fasteners/clips!

Paul, where did the water ended in yout trunk? I found water below the spare tyre, really soaked. Thought it was a replaced brake light but I took if off and it seems ok.
@paulslater6597
@paulslater6597 5 лет назад
Manlio, the water filled the inside of the tailgate and came pouring out when the tailgate was opened. If water does not come out of the tailgate when it is opened then I think your leak might be from somewhere else. If the carpet is wet then you you could start to trace the leak from the wet patch.

@ashleycook4460

Hello Paul, I'm getting water all the way into the spare tire well. Did the water you were getting go that far? I can't tell if it's a leak here or the sunroof drains. Any advice? Thanks!
@paulslater6597
@paulslater6597 5 лет назад
That sounds like a pretty serious leak. If the grommet is missing from the hole in the bottom edge of the boot lid then the inside of the boot lid will fill up with water. However the drain hole is outside of the rubber seal around the boot and unless the car is parked at quite an angle then I would be surprised if the boot lid could fill up enough for the water to leak into the boot rather that out of the hole. Even though my drive is quite steep the water only came through the boot lid when I opened the boot. Is the carpet in the boot wet? Can you follow the wet patch to the source? Are there any obvious holes in the spare tyre well letting the water in? I don't have a sunroof on my car so I don't know anything about the sunroof drains. I hope you manage to sort it out.
@paulslater6597
@paulslater6597 5 лет назад
I've just had another thought. If the little rubber grommet is still visible in the bottom edge of the boot lid then maybe the other end of the tube has become detached. This would fill the boot lid with water which would then have no where to go but inside the boot. There would be quite a lot of water inside the boot which would be very obvious when opening the boot lid.
@ashleycook4460
@ashleycook4460 5 лет назад
Thanks for the reply. I can see the grommet but it's squished and tucked all the way in. The carpet is wet in the boot, but only where the spare tire sits. It will actually pool up there. I can see drips near the triangle back window. We're thinking it's the sunroof drains which runs up in the headliner. No good comes from sunroofs!

@paulslater6597
@paulslater6597 6 лет назад
Hi Tamas. It could be a leak around the rear light cluster. If you pull the boot lid rear trim off and get inside the boot with someone washing down the rear of the car maybe you can see where it comes in.

I Don't understand. Where is the pipe going? What is it's job?
@paulslater6597
@paulslater6597 4 года назад
The tailgate opening handle is not watertight and water can get into the handle. There is a drain hole at the bottom of the handle inside the tailgate. The drain pipe connects this drain hole to the hole in the bottom edge of the tailgate. If you take the large trim panel off from inside the tailgate you should see where the pipe connects. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the answer, now I understand. I should look if on my mk5 is the same, otherwise I'll make myself some drain holes at the bottom of the trunk door

Hello Paul. Can this drain tube be a problem with Tiguan leaking in boot.
@paulslater6597
@paulslater6597 5 лет назад
Sorry I don't know but it wouldn't surprise me if the Tiguan has the same boot release handle so may need the drain tube. If there is a hole in the bottom edge of the boot lid directly below the boot release and this hole does not have a rubber grommet in it then there is a good chance you have the same problem. I would suggest having a look at another Tiguan to see if that has a grommet then you will know that yours is missing.

hi paul do you have to disconnect the lights to pull the plastic off?
@paulslater6597
@paulslater6597 5 лет назад
No you don't have to disconnect the lights. You do have to pull off the plastic parts around the rear window first and then you can take off the big plastic part. Start with the trim around the top of the rear window and then do the trim down the sides of the window.
