Gone in 45 seconds..Bye Bye Phantom Quadcopter over the ocean...or is it?

A DJI Phantom Quadcopter gets hijacked by radio antennas when flying over the ocean. Enterprise Channel in Victoria BC has a lot of interesting boat traffic. I tried flying my quad there when four large radio antennas overwhelmed my transmitter causing the quad to fly away. Enabling "Return to Home" brought the quad back safely, with no battery life left, but still alive! Enjoy my nerve wracking experience!

Ah, another super intelligent, highly educated person who calls a multirotor a Quadcopter (and that's exactly what they are). NorthOlbo, you are so lucky that your Quadcopter returned back on its own. I wish you happiness. Greetings from Australia.

Yeah, I wish I knew the actual battery life better, my next quad will have that capability. Especially flying into a headwind. I have flown over water at least a 100 times so it doesn't bother me, losing control does though, anywhere!

I have been told that the four antennas originally put out AM radio 1070 KHz at 10KW power, FM radio 107.3 MHz at 20 KW power, a ham radio at 550 W at 14.084-14.09 SSB (whatever that is) and 1400 W at 14.16-18 SSB (again, whatever that is) and on occasion 14.26 That info is a bit dated now and there may be additional AM and FM broadcasts from them. I don't know if these strong signals could create a secondary interference effect within the Phantom controls even though they arent on identical frequencies. Certainly there is a lot of transmission power focussed in that direction (the antennas direct north towards Victoria and Canada, not south towards the Washington state in the US). Any electrical engineers out there who can speak to this?
@vourkosdude
@vourkosdude 10 лет назад
Hi there, nice scary video! I am a telecom engineer and I can say quite surely that if you are using 2.4GHz and 5GHz mode there is no way in hell these AM frequencies can jam your signal. You should try and see if there are any maritime radars around for traffic control, they might be you cause but I feel that the main reason you lost control is your transmitter proximity to a calm sea. When you go in to the GHz band water scatters the signal allover and although you might have good receiving power levels, there are fading effects that make sudden huge drops, making the copter unresponsive. Next time it happens, try to run for higher ground, even if it is further away. It should do the trick.

***** Wow, they "Drop" their price on this Quadcopter! It's probably because of Christmas time! I'm about to buy my first UAV and I've been looking a different models and this one (*DJI* *Phantom* *2*) really interested me at first although I've heard SO Many Negative Reviews about it that I got a bit nervous to purchase it! Any advise would be appreciated? One Drone that really impressed me was this model called *"Hiro* *UFO":* www.gameofdrones.biz/shop/ It is so durable! Look at their videos!

***** DJI is not the cheapest but probably has the most competitive and abundant product out there for an "all in one" device. I have suffered through them in their early days of horrible software upgrades and mediocre support. They are SO much better now. After six quadcopters (three types), six transmitters, twenty batteries, numerous mods and and least 600 flights I can say pilot error is responsible for 99% of problems. I'm still convinced these radio antennas hijacked my drone but even there maybe I did something, but I don't think so. Nearly every situation is a disorientated pilot or losing a signal and not responding safely. Start slowly, practice practice practice without friends or distractions in open fields, and don't get carried away. These are so easy to fly you quickly think your'e Top Gun and want to do crazy RU-vid stuff. Don't. Go to forums like PhantomPilots.com and read everything for newbies. And stay away from people, cars, buildings and anywhere the drone is giving us a bad name. But do go for it! Photography and fun flying will never be the same for you.

Nice! I lost 1st generation Phantom over the Mississippi River in New Orleans one flight It was unseen for about 2 minutes before I turned off the tx. The Phantom is not the "Mercedes Benz" of drones, more like a higher end Ford. Functional, well thought out and reasonably made for the price. There are some amazing new units coming out this year with many of the same features for several hundred dollars that will be smaller and sportier like VWs , as well as loaded with power for high end photography like BMWs. To get a sense of some amazing inventions being developed go to Kickstarter.com and search under "flight". You'll see super creative models being developed that may get to market in addition to the regular huge assortment out there right now. I think this year we'll see cheaper, safer and smaller units more suitable for "personal" space flying in recreational areas and sports.
@ronvavra

Thanks. Any particular machines that you know of and can recommend? You're saying the new units will do more and cost less?
@farmerfarmerer3847
@farmerfarmerer3847 9 лет назад
NorthOlbo Cheaper "units" mean more idiots to run riot and ruin it for the rest of us. (sorry to sound cynical but you know its true.) I liked the Quadshot, that was from the Kickstarter ? Trouble is satill virtually impossible to buy one! Phantom may not be theBenz sure but it must be the most popular brand in the world and even me down here in New Zealand can get any part I need pronto from anywhere in the world. DJI has the infrastructure, they are setting the pace for everyone else.

Thanks! Flying these is exhilarating and nerve wracking. When i first started my adrenaline was through the roof and after 20 minutes I'd be exhausted. Now I'm calmer but still not real comfortable with people talking to me while I'm focussing on trickier stuff. Maybe I'm now ok with the fact that one day a part will fail, a tree catch me, the wind push harder than I can recover from. And that quad is gone. As long as no one is injured its just stuff.

+NorthOlbo Actually, that is one of the reasons why I sold my Phantom. The anxiety I had every time I flew was overkill. I never enjoyed flying, I only enjoyed when I got the Phantom home. Though, I flew it maybe 100 times and never experienced one abnormal problem, I still think I might have induced some slight heart trauma after those 100 times of worry.

My first quadcopter was a v262. I lost it after about 3 weeks. After recovering it from a crash in tall trees, I couldn't tell which direction it was going, and it got caught in some winds. Was fighting to bring it back but couldn't tell which direction it was going. Then it went out of range and went down beyond a bunch of pine trees past a block of houses. I was glad it was a $70 mistake instead of having bought a 600-800 dollar unit as my first quadcopter.

I make double sure my iPhone volume is turned all the way up so I am sure to hear the 30% low battery alarm. I also make darn sure I have GPS lock before taking off, don't want to lose my expensive toy. I do a compass calibration before each days flying (overkill?) and head it back at 30% because at 15% it will land where it is, hopefully not in a lake, pool, or in a busy roadway. I was thinking of changing those values to 25 and 10% because it seems at 30 I still have 6 or 7 minutes of flying. This is a great video and a good warning on checking your intended flying area.

Ted Stranix Exactly. I had a Phantom 2 flyaway over water. I got "lucky" as it just crashed in a marsh half submerged. Damaged. I wouldn't buy a Phantom. Like the IPhone or Apple products parts are proprietary and they force you to buy from them. Example Phantom: has a chipset in the batteries and if you try and use any other battery it simply won't fly. Batteries? $100 each. There are some great RC quads and planes out there and they use the same batteries....but not DJI Phantoms. In fact I would recommend the Cheerson CX-20 for less than 1/2 the cost of the Phantom (under $300) It performs just as well although the build isn't as good as a Phantom. Or simply look around and reviews on others. They almost all chinese including phantoms. Look at some of the American custom made ones if you want to spend all that money.

@Ben7seven7
@Ben7seven7 10 лет назад
They're four things you could do to improve your RC. 1) Modify your RC control to use any screw in antenna you want, which will give you a lot more gain. 2) Use a rf amplifier in addition to higher gain antenna. 3) Use a better RC control such a a futaba or even a Spektrum. 4) Use an EZUHF system. This plugs into the trainer port of either of the two transmitters I mentioned. You'll get much better overall range over stock and the chances of interference will be slim to none.

Hence the reason to upgrade your radio to a FUTABA or other brand radio to avoid being overpowered by other rogue transmissions. Always good to do an Advanced Calibration before a long day of flying and even once again taking some time to do another calibration. Always recalibrate your compass before a flight and then again after several flights. There's no such thing as over calibrating. If you make it part of your standard routine then your level of enjoyment will increase because you'll have less mishaps and scratching your head saying . . . "hmmm I wonder what happened?" Treat the Phantom as if you were going to be traveling in it yourself. --- A great rule of thumb . . .

+sothathappened Absolutely. Thats the law too unless you have a commercial licence. These are lowest cost electronic devices one step from a toy in an environment of electrical interference, GPS atmospheric interference, and pilot inexperience. Those things are uncontrollable but can happen, add to that doing things you know you aren't supposed to like flying beyond sight and you can see why regulators get so concerned.

A guy posted a video on RU-vid where he lost response in front of the Hollywood Sign, because directly behind it are a large group of radio towers/antennas, he used the Home function as well, and it made it back, so it seems like those towers are a thing to watch out for, good luck! (your title is misleading btw)

Did you know the antennas were there before your flight began ? If you did, then why would you even think of flying. An antenna (or aerial) is an electrical device which converts electric power into radio waves, and vice versa. It is usually used with a radio transmitter or radio receiver. In transmission, a radio transmitter supplies an electric current oscillating at radio frequency i.e. a high frequency alternating current (AC)) to the antenna's terminals, and the antenna radiates the energy from the current as electromagnetic waves (radio waves). In reception, an antenna intercepts some of the power of an electromagnetic wave in order to produce a tiny voltage at its terminals, that is applied to a receiver to be amplified. Antennas are essential components of all equipment that uses radio. They are used in systems such as radio broadcasting, broadcast television, two-way radio, communications receivers, radar, cell phones, and satellite communications, as well as other devices such as garage door openers, wireless microphones, Bluetooth-enabled devices, wireless computer networks, baby monitors, and RFID tags on merchandise.
