I think the song reflects an emotionally abusive relationship. He puts more coffee in his cup because he feels like he puts more effort into it. The "treats from his friend" that he crushes down are all of his friends' suggestions to break up with her, but he doesn't listen to them. Their love is a "Punch and Judy Show" because she is emotionally abusive to him, and in the "Rise and shine" part he elevates her emotionally, like in many abusive relationships. In the last part he then finally realizes how much toxic she is.
I was obsessed with this song during my sectioned inpatient era. Specifically, I remember getting to go home for christmas and watching this on repeat.
