I quit drinking in memory of Robin. I had been struggling with alcohol for years...and then we lost him. I really started working harder at sobriety when he left us. I have nearly 12 months now 100% free.
This film is meant ti lull young american killers into a sense of peacefulness. Keep the cattle quiet before they are put to use: napalm poisoned the water and crops. babies born with no arms or no leg. massacres, gang rapes, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning"-- shows you the evil of the US Military and its murderous love of money/rape of other countries resources
The real Adrian Cronheur got in trouble for making the following announcement: "At the tone the time will be, for Army personnel, 0900. For Air Force personnel it'll be 9 AM. For Navy personnel it will be two bells in the forenoon watch. And for Marines the big hand will be pointing at the 12 and the little hand will be pointing at the 9."
I believe I read in an interview somewhere that he considered Good Morning Vietnam one of the hardest movies he had ever done because he had to work so hard to stay in-character and not bust out laughing at the jokes.
Hans Grueber his character had to be tough military figure and not a likable person as several of his movies he played bad guys or unlikeable and corrupt military officers like in A Few Good Men. J.T. Walsh had said he wanted to get away from playing villains and characters that people disliked and play good characters but he died in 1998 at 54.
@@scottknode898 I don't know how true this is, but there is a bit of an old theatrical saw that says it takes a good actor to play a likeable character; but a great actor to play a thoroughly unlikeable one ... One of the few times J. T. Walsh played someone both in the military and likeable, was in 'Sniper', with Tom Berenger and Billy Zane. Pity he had so little screen time in that ...
"Whats the difference between the cub scouts and the military, the cub scouts don't have heavy artillery." That's got to be one of the best quotes of all time.
0:54 My father was a National Guardsman. The version he knew was "what's the difference between the National Guard and the Cub Scouts? Cub Scouts have adult supervision."
The fact Robin did most of this on the fly with no script is amazing. If I'm having a bad day, I watch Robin Williams and roar my ass off. I also have BiPolar, and have survived multiple suicide attempts and addictions issues. Rest In Peace Robin, you won't be forgotten.
You're never alone. We're always here for each other. I have some mental health issues that I look at as life trials. Seems we both have the same category of life trials from the Devines. We can make it. Never stop trying and never surrender.
I miss him too much though. I hate that so many of the figures I grew up with are gone now. I am slowly despising this world and how it's so judgemental and every arsehole dumps their shit on you to make their lives a little better by being mean spirited. Robin is deeply missed every day and year since his death . Rip robin ❤️

Serious? Bunch of assholes, sure I can’t even go to a bar now without some dickhead wanting to start a fight just because he thinks you looked at him the wrong way or said something in his drug induced paranoia. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be on the earth anyway, it’s like I was born in the wrong time or something, I know people say “oh this is your time own it “ but like the 90s as a kid and what I would have liked in adulthood is long gone, and these times just seem stale, every girl I meet is obsessed with social media and it’s just sucked the joy out of everything. My humour was very like robin Williams and makes me think I’m manic sometimes that it’s hard to cope when life seems dull
The reactions on the other guys' faces while Robin acts out is just priceless. Pretty sure they couldn't contain their outbursts, which makes it relatable as Robin was a comedic god! We miss you Robin!
It's amazing how spontaneous, hilarious, and whacky he could be. But in an instant he could hit you with a raw emotional honesty you would never expect. When he's grab-assing with the troops and you notice his demeanour change slowly as he realizes he may never see them again. It's incredible. You experience a similar feeling with Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, etc. A true comic, a true human.
@@jettywetty9398 It had nothing what so ever to do with what that. He was simply an outstanding comedian and actor with an utterly unique mastery of his craft. When we are born is an utterly arbitrary lottery. Attributing people's accomplishments to the motion and position of celestial bodies as viewed from Earth's perspective at the time of their birth is an insult to the blood, sweat, and tears they poured into achieving them. To say the Robin Williams' talent was due to him being a "Cancerian" is tantamount to spitting on his memory and I will not stand for that. I have no issue with people foolishly thinking their own lives are dictated by these ludicrous falsehoods, to each their own and whatnot, but take your snake oil elsewhere.
That last part when he's talking to the soldiers on the truck was really heartbreaking. He knew he was trying to cheer up these guys knowing most of them would die. I know it was a movie, but I knew it probably happened.
You are obviously misinformed, which does not surprise me. No VC or NVA commander in there right mind would pay any attention to anything said on AFVN. Their intelligence gathering apparatus could teach the CIA how its done. They knew where we were going before we did. Ask any grunt or pilot how many times no one was supposed to be there and they had a reception waiting for them or how many times they were supposed to be there and no one was home. AFVN was boring and conservative as you would expect a military radio station to be, but it sure was good to hear late at night when you were wet, sick, and sometimes scared.
That last scene was probably what he was like in real life. Could just command the attention of strangers by asking their names and entertaining them. Amazing. What a gift.
I was in the Army for 15 yrs. And I did 3 tours in Iraq. 2 of them during the worst times to be there. And every time we came back home from deployments there were veterans at the Airport ranging from WW2 to Vietnam and so on. They always thanked us for our service. Which honestly I never felt we deserved to hear that from them. No matter how shitty Iraq was or how many times I went to a funeral of someone we lost. I knew that what we we went through was NOTHING compared to the absolute shit storm those men went through during their times. They always had my total respect before I had ever joined. And after serving I have even more respect for them. Our Vietnam vets were treated horribly and they deserved so much better when they came home. Rest in peace brothers and sisters.
Honestly I had the same feeling man, I was on rotation in Romania for 3 months cause of the war in Ukraine and then came back to the states. I felt like I didn't deserve it cause the other guys I was with were in Europe for about a year.
This reminds me of the scene from jarhead where the Vietnam vet hopped on to the greyhound with the returning marines and welcomed them home before entering a 1000 yard stare. As inaccurate as the movie was(according to my teacher who’s a veteran), that scene really stuck with me.
story time: when this movie was being made, robin williams was asked to come up with some vietnam jokes, the director told him to just film himself making as many jokes as he could. robin then proceeded to make that tape, which consisted of 25 HOURS OF CONSECUTIVE VIETNAM JOKES. robin williams was truly a brilliant man. it saddens me so much to see how much this man was suffering, he managed to entertain millions of people and make so many happy while he himself was struggling so deeply. he literally could not go more than 6 months without checking himself into a mental hospital. when he would make the brilliant jokes that we all know and love, it pained him, because he simply could not stop, rambling on and on. Shortly before his death, robin was diagnosed with Lewy's, which is a very very aggressive form of dimentia, and as sad as it is, he didn't want to watch, and more importantly he didn't want his fans to watch him wither away. Robin Williams with forever remain one of my greatest heroes, RIP to you, who has changed my life so much, and may gods love be with you.
If that is indeed the case, and the reason for it, then i am ok with Robin doing what he did. I would do the same thing. No hesitation or questions asked And before you rain Hell down on me, for my apparant heartlessness and maliciousness, consider this. If you were given the following choices: 1: Dying in a matter of seconds or minutes at most. 2: slowly, but absolutely, losing your personality. Losing your memories. losing everything that made you the person you are today. And eventually losing control of your body, and of everything else. One day at a time. For months, or years, at a time Withering away to the point of dying THEN finally dying Which among those would *you* choose? (Anybody here that has worked with those cursed with altzheimers & dementia know what I'm talking about) I have always been a believer in merciful deaths. If someone faces a slow and agonizing end to their life, or will otherwise spend the rest of their time here in irrevocable pain or severe life altering discomfort, with no way to mend it all, it should be their choice to continue that existence or not. What gives you the right to decide that for them?
I’ve spent a good amount of time in Vietnam (Englishman with dual Australian nationality), and the US tourist and backpackers I met all said they’d been worried about anti-American sentiment from the locals before they arrived. And every one of them told me they’d been treated brilliantly, made to feel very welcome. The Vietnamese are a genuinely amazing people.
I have Vietnamese neighbors who left in 1975 and were picked up by the American military while floating on a barge in the South China Sea. My family and I treated them with kindness and courtesy but sadly other neighbors did not.
I'm an American who lives in Thailand (13 years) and I've taken many trips to Vietnam, and I will agree 100% with your post. To paraphrase a taxi driver I had in Hanoi, he basically said, "We fought you for ten years. But we fought the French for a hundred, and we've been fighting the Chinese for a thousand. Don't worry about it."
There was a real sense of sincerity about it. And as long as people have a heart and a sense of humour, the late great Robin Williams will always be remembered.
I yelled Good morning Vietnam at cosmetology school when I walked in the door this morning.. my executive director/friend started bussing out laughing. That made my day... 💞 thanks Mr. Robin Williams
The real Adrian Cronauer was nothing like this. He once said something like "If I had done half the things Robin Williams did, I would've been court martialed and shipped to Leavenworth."
@@damadiel9726 Some of them will go home on wheelchairs; more will go home with minimal physical injuries, but mentally scarred forever. Should add the clip when he played _What a Wonderful World_ for those boys.
Ofcourse he would've been raw he was telling it as it is/was in front of adult males so he could say whatever he wanted to say without any feelings of reprisal fighting back
Robin Williams was the world's most talented actor and comedian. He was a genuine person who had a beautiful soul. I hope he has found peace and happiness wherever he is with God's warm embrace. The world is definitely a sadder place without him in it, but I am grateful he made all of us laugh. I always smile when I think of this wonderful man. RIP always, RW. :-)
This by far one of Robin Williams best performances. The pure fact that all of the broadcasts were improvised is simply incredible. I can't believe how underrated this movie and this performance is. Rest in Peace Robin Williams, you were one of the best.
This really happened to the real Adrian Cronauer, it really affected him and Robin Williams played the scene perfectly. Knowing that you are going home but the men you are speaking with, many won't go home. Such a poignant part expertly portrayed. And a heartbreaking moment 💔
@@michelestewart4152 It was really said, i watched an interview that had both Williams and Cronauer. Robin Williams consulted with Adrian Cronauer so he could learn the mannerisms of Adrian. That part was written in and brings the humanity and the love for the men fighting there. It was when he really realized how much the Troops appreciated him. By putting that in the movie he was showing that they touched Adrian as much as he touched them. The scene was to show that he had never forgotten those men. It was there at the insistance of Adrian Cronauer himself. What he didnt know was just how much that scene touches the audience as well. Best scene in the movie because it truly shows a real event and Robin played it like no other could.
The last scene has always hit a chord, with the soldiers heading off in the trucks, knowing that many didn't return from the war. But also to the point today, it feels like Robin is saying goodbye to us, leaving us with all his great memories. Good Morning Vietnam was one of my favourite movie growing up. Thank you Robin, for the impression you've made on my life. We all miss you. 😥
This move was perfect for Robin, it just let's him keep doing his thing. Just turn him loose on a stage, any stage, and watch him do his shtick. RIP Robin.
"You've been down everything but the Titanic." God. I gotta use that one day. Brilliant! I rewatch this every few months to remember him and laugh before sentiment.

Memorial day ...for all the lives lost for our freedom, thank you. I miss you Robin Williams and my dad whom was shell shocked , at age 22, and lived out his life in v.a. hospital, whom I never knew...r.i.p.
dead is dead. Death is death, no matter how you go. He is in a better place now. If such a place as heaven exists you are judged by you not by how you go. There are people out there who died and their bodies are no more, nothing was left, no body parts nothing yet depending on the type of person they were their in heaven or hell. If they exist. Respectfully.
Faith: a strongly held belief or theory. I mean what I said; it takes as much faith to believe there is no afterlife than it takes to believe in one. You have no empirical evidence for the former, I have none for the latter.
Unbelievable actor, what a great great character. He was just great. Imagine how difficult must have been to remember and act all those lines. I don't have anymore words to compliment Robin Williams.
Been watching the Ken Burns series on Vietnam, my heart breaks for these vets and how they were treated after the war. We owe our soldiers a debt for their sacrifices.
Ccjj, I too am an American veteran of that era. I was scheduled to go to Vietnam, but literally at the last moment was told I'd be going to Berlin ,Germany instead. I had friends who went& came back very different& friends who came back in a box. We weren't allowed to win that conflict, being hamstrung by our own government, then hated by the very people we served. One of my buddies that made it back was a survivor of hamburger hill, he couldn't talk about it without breaking down, sobbing uncontrollably. When this movie came out I was doubtful about seeing it, but I'm glad now that I did. How very poinent it was when Robin was talking with the troops , it put real flesh& bones, real faces onto a very bad dream. When my girlfriend told me Robin had taken his own life I had to pull my truck off the road, take a moment just to cry, praying he would be safely home, missing the wonderful human touch he gave everything he did!
Emperor Penguin Really? Is that sarcasm? America treats its Vets like superheroes? Politicians praise them sure but they keep sending young people of to fight bullshit wars then underfund and virtually abandon them when they return home. The most patriotic thing an American can do is NOT join the US Military and stop politicians from exploiting young lives for their corporate masters. Do you actually think these politicians are really good Christians. They use God and Country as a rallying cry for their next exploitation. Then when young men and women die, they say, “They are in a better place.” ‘God will reward them for their service to freedom and liberty.’ It’s all propaganda. You want to thank a Vet, convince an 18 year old not to join; prevent them from becoming a Vet.
I don’t care what anyone says, this was the best Vietnam Period Piece ever to hit the box office. Neither Apocalypse Now, nor Full Metal Jacket compares(although that Ride of The Valkyries scene in Apocalypse Now was my favorite of any war movie). Sure, R. Lee Ermey was legendary, but Robin Williams is one of the best actors ever, and his role as Cronauer was up there with his best.
That look on Williams' face as the soldiers in the trucks drove away always brings the onion cutting ninjas to my house...Very powerful moment because he knows a lot of them won't be coming back home alive. :(
Tom Jerry darn it there goes my new loafers in the bin lol God forbid I forget and wear them out there and run into u😉u will be giggling knowingly and that we can't have
I cannot describe my love for Robin Williams' work I think it's a cruel irony in this world a person who brings so much happiness to the world can be in so much pain.
RIP Robin arguably the best adlib comedian besides Jonathan Winters. Both are legends. The two together are golden and must see! If you ever get the chance see one of the recordings of either or or both in a prop room just doing their thing! They just make it up as they go. This is the movie that made Robin a star.
I'm Robin's age and laughed with him all through his career. He was a master entertainer, always put a smile on my face. One of the best ad-lib comedians to walk this earth. I remember him as a guest on Johnny Carson, he stole the show and left Johnny and the audience in stitches!
Thank you Robin Williams for all the great laughs over the years. Truly one of your best films and my personal favorite. This is what started my appreciation of you in working the arts

I used to have an English teacher in the 9th grade who was an infantry in the Vietnam War.(he was teaching voluntarily but he still got paid) We really used to like his stories and sometimes he used to assign us projects, calling them recon missions and calling us Green Berets,Air Force,Marines etc. Even though he was our skills teacher and from a different country(we're from turkey) we loved him more than any teacher that was in our class edit: forgot to add, he also called the Principle and the board of discipline the MP and Court Marshall
