My Dad gave me Workingman's Dead on CD back in 1993. I was 16 years old. It wasn't my birthday, no special occasion whatsoever. He apparently just stopped off somewhere at random and picked it up because he thought I would like it... I loved it. Whenever I listen to this album, especially New Speedway Boogie, Easy Wind or Black Peter I'm transported back to the most carefree wonderous time of my life. Thanks Dad.

This new podcast is exactly what the rock ‘n roll doctor ordered. Aligning it with the newly released 50th anniversary of Workingman’s-and dedicating the first 8 episodes to the tracks on that historical LP-is goddamned perfect.

"If the Grateful Dead came to town I'd beat my way in with a fucking tire iron if necessary" Hunter's writing style was so revolutionary and hilarious at the same time. This is the second or third time I've heard or read this quote and it always makes me laugh.

Was great hearing these interviews today, 25 years after the final Grateful Dead concert. 50 years ago when Workingmans Dead was released I had been to my first two Dead shows earlier in the year at the Fillmore East. The acoustic sets plus the New Riders of the Purple Sage made for magical experiences. 1970 was a real high point in my life being able to see the Dead at the Fillmore, the Capital Theater and Stony Brook. Those times are indelibly branded in my soul. Come hear Uncle John’s Band Playing to the tide Come with me or go alone He’s come to take his children home

This "Deadcast" is so awesome!! One of my favorite Dead tunes to strum out and sing myself. I had heard or read the interview with Jerry talking about the origins of UJB. I too have been wondering how I might locate the "Bulgarian folk music" (as I believe Jerry put it) which inspired the song. The piece sampled definitely has the melody--love it! Thanks to all who took the time and energy to put this all together and to do that research. I trust that it was a labor of love!

What a nice addition to this music, legendary and all. I get the Jerry/Miles references. In my opinion, they took the main melody and ran with it. To me the miracle of the Grateful Dead was not how long they survived, but that they survived at all with so many independent souls. (In the end, Jerry Garcia was the Lead Guitar that gathered them together.) More than Miles, Jerry has made me think of Django. Just my opinion.

The electric version with Brent is driving me bonkers, I know it but cannot find it. All the versions they played were from official releases - after some more research it's Dick's Picks 05 (12/26/79). The 2nd set of the show is boiling with fresh energy. The Joani Walker/Paul Scotton aud is the way to go

This is gonna be phenomenal! It’s definitely a shame about the Angel’s Share though. I think it’s pretty screwed up to come out with something like that and use it to try and force people to shell out for subscriptions to needless, money grubbing music streaming services. That’s about as anti-Grateful Dead as it gets, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong... I would gladly pay for the Angel’s Share as an album, but renting music is just offensive to me.
