Unbroken Chain is still my favorite Grateful Dead song to this day. Thank you so much for highlighting the relationship between Animal Collective and this song, without them sampling it in “What would I Want? Sky”, I would have never discovered Unbroken Chain or even listened to the Grateful Dead in the first place. I’m forever grateful to both bands.

I was listening to the Angel's Share of UBC in my car yesterday and was enjoying the synth part, then I noticed that it was actually a jet plane flying low over me at the exact right time in the song. Pretty funny...

You gotta be kidding me! I had the exact same experience about 50 years ago. The album had recently come out, and I had pulled into a parking lot and was getting ready to leave my car when Unbroken Chain came on the local progressive rock station (WHFS, Bethesda MD.). I was captivated by the song, sitting in my car and taking it in. There were no mind altering substances involved; I was coming home from work. Anyway, there are three airports in the greater DC area, so a person is almost always in the flight path of one of them. So when the synth part comes in, it sounded to me exactly like the whine of a airliner descending on a final approach. It took me a few seconds to realize that the sound was coming out of the speakers and not from overhead!
@nulldude782
@nulldude782 2 месяца назад
@@lawrencegeusz4890 in my case, the rough mix didn’t have the synth, but the plane came over at the right time and made the sound!

I love these in depth looks into the GD world, creative process, technical insights and of course the music. THANK YOU!!!!! I had to pause this at 1: 53: 52 = hair standing on end... was there on 3/19/95... our group caught it from the first few notes in the intro... we lost our minds (in a very good way )... as recognition spread through the audience from a few whoops to a deafening roar our elation and pure ecstasy rose with it. It is among one of my life's peak experiences. Thank you GD. I am grateful... : )

It was unbroken chain that made me fall in love with the Grateful Dead. It was on a greatest hits cd I got after hearing from friends how good the Grateful Dead was. Out of all the songs on the cd unbroken chain is the song that really opened my heart to the magic of Grateful Dead that's forever changed my life!

That high pitched sound that Grateful Ned used his synthesizer to develop for the end of the jam in Unbroken Chain is, in my opinion a sound that is very similar to the sound of a cicada in the summer. How anybody could mistake this for a commercial jet is beyond me. Haven’t you ever listened to this exquisite insect on a lazy summer afternoon? One particular reason this is special to me is that this sound is the exact sound I heard while I had a self-initiated out of body experience while meditating on 3 separate occasions. It was TOTALLY COOL being that this was my first out of body experience that taught me that I AM Spirit, IAM Eternal and not my body. This changed my life forever 15 years ago. And the thing is that I am not at all that much into meditating. I just always wanted to find a way out of suffering without artificial means.

Jetliner for me, bro', especially hearing it for the first time. The cicadas I have heard have a more modulated, up and down song, not a single sustained tone. But I have never meditated on them, only on crickets. My out of body experiences didn't involve cicadas. To each his own.

There has been a lot of criticism of Donna Jean, and she sure had some bad performances, but can anyone imagine Unbroken Chain without her superb voice? Anyone? When she was good she was simply awesome. We all have our sub prime moments and nobody should be defined by them

I was at that concert at Giants in 95' (both of them). It was difficult. Something was clearly wrong and although I had heard rumors from inside the scene for about 18 months at that point that Garcia was sick in large part from using heroin. I remember thinking that at his age that he'd have already died if he was seriously using, not realizing that I was kind of witnessing that in real time. And let's be honest, the main reason the Unbroken Chain at Giants (6/19) was a mess is because Garcia couldn't function on stage that night and had turned his guitar all the way down. That's the bittersweet in those guys bringing that song into their live repertoire. The song really highlighted and shone a light on what was lurking beneath the surface. For what it's worth, I was buoyed by the Dead's RFK performance on 6/24/95 which sadly isn't in circulation on any SBD recording I've ever heard, but it was the last time I saw Garcia and Lesh live, and although Garcia may have not been in the same shape he was when I first saw him from about 89' to 93' ish (I can't imagine trying to play with any neuropathy in my hands) he sounded like he was awoken to a degree that evening.

This was my favorite song when I was young, and is still right up there. I remember being crushed when I got a call saying the boys busted it out back east a few times. I had stopped going to shows for a while because I didn’t like what the scene had become and I couldn’t stand Vince with the Dead, it was right up there with Donna. The circus like keys just ruined the vibe imho and then Brent’s vocals (lead and back up) missing just left a big hole and all those things added together made it not worth it for me but I was really bummed they decided to bust out unbroken chain at that point in their iteration. Not only did I not get to hear it in person but there were no old live versions to listen to either. Just the one studio version which is perfect but it’s those non-perfect live versions where the greatness is found!

48:54 I'm begging you guys to get a decent musician in your editing room when you put this stuff together. You're putting in the wrong parts to correspond with Ned Lagin's description of the tune. The bridge of the tune in 11/8 (4+4+3) that he's talking about is the part you put in after he spoke of the B section of the bridge in 15. And you faded the part in 15 (4+3+4+4) (with the beginning of Jerry solo) out. Oy vey, y'all. Y'all are killing me. Just for caca's and giggles, if you're ever trying to count along - the intro is 5/4, 3/8, 3/4, 5/8, 2/4, 6/4, 5/4, 6/4, 4/4, 4/4, 6/4, 5/4, and the 6/8 lead in (with the kicks) to the first verse. 1st verse: 4 bars of 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 --- 2nd verse: 6 bars of 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 --- 3rd verse: 4 bars of 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 --- 4th verse: 8 bars of 4/4 C section: 7 bars of 4/4, 3/4, 6/8 5th verse: 4 bars of 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 --- 6th verse: 8 bars of 4/4 *BRIDGE* 4 bars of 11/8 (4+4+3), 4 bars of 15/8 (4+3+4+4), 14 bars of 11/8 (4+4+3), 4 bars of 15/8 (4+3+4+4), one bar turnaround 4/4 C' section: 9 bars of 4/4 D section 3 bars of 4/4, 3/8, 2 bars of 4/4 7th verse: 3 bars of 4/4, 3/8, 2 bars of 4/4 --- 8th verse: 3 bars of 4/4, 3/8, 2 bars of 4/4 --- 9th verse: 3 bars of 4/4, 3/8, 2 bars of 4/4 --- 10th verse: 3 bars of 4/4, 3/8, 2 bars of 4/4 outro: 10 bars of 4/4

They could use some decent editors period. These things are becoming bloated with the phone interviews. Literally 30 minutes before they talk about the actual song. So much Ned. Come on guys, let the narrator summarize the majority of the meandering recollections please.

@@davidbrehmer2596 I have to part ways with you there. I don't mind the meandering, and Ned Lagin is one of the best musicians the Dead ever ran across.
