Row Jimmy had that quintessential slow bouncy feel. Kind of like Ramble on Rose. During the solos it was easy to get lost in the music as all the players kind of wandered off in the way only the Dead can do. Was always interesting watching people dancing to it.

Well said. I was one of those dancing maniacs. Loved dancing to Dead music. That was my jam.

I always had the impression of somewhere in Lousianna , a guy named Jimmy havin to row a boat down the levy, past Grass Shacks to get back to Julie ,who would dance to an Olde Jukebox...

I think almost certainly Garcia had heard reggae by the time Row Jimmy was written. Before reggae there was ska which he must have known about. "Israelites" by Desmond Dekker and the Aces was a hit in 1969 hitting #9 on the US charts. The Wailers first album came out in 1965. Jerry was an extremely aware person when it came to music. The demo doesn't sound all that much like reggae, but my guess is that when the band was trying to figure out what to do with this song, the "new" reggae style was suggested as a way to give it unique character and be hip with the times.

It's probably my favorite Dead song, especially Spring 1990 versions. And also I always think Julie is the name of a dog who ran off and caught a rabbit Its why ive always wanted a pair of dogs named Julie and Jimmy

I have 2 vinyl copies from ‘73 and both have Stella Blue before Row Jimmy on the disc even though the label is opposite. Is that unusual?

A lazy mid-summer reflection on experiences of childhood innocence is always what it evoked for me.

Also, if you guys know the Phish song "Sanity" it totally rips off the one riff from Row Jimmy

idk why at the end of this ep dude mentions Trey covering it, but nothing about why Phish added that little Row Jimmy riff to Sanity?!
