This show reminded me of my family growing up. Poor but we had each other. Loved watching it on tv as a kid and I had a huge crush on Janet Jackson and Chip fields.

You forgot a few recurring characters. Alderman or as Willona would call him Balderman Fred Davis. There was also Sweet Lenny played by Dap Sugar William.
Chip Fields came on the show for the 1977-78 season. She was 26, not 23. The same for Janet Jackson who was eleven that same season playing Ms Fields abused daughter.
Chip Fields was also the acting coach for Janet , Todd Bridges, and Gary Coleman in addition to her daughter Kim , who played Penny's best friend on the show!

Its so weird that John Amos and Jimmie Walker are 7-8 years apart and played father and son on the show. Never new that until a few years ago and i'm sure alot of other people didn't know. Wish the writers hadn't kill James off but John wanted to leave the show.

A lot of make up and wigs to age her character. Plus they gave her a mature role. Esther(like Weezy Jefferson) was old enough to play everybody’s mom and grandma on that show.
