False. You need to get your eyes checked. The bad lighting is only lighting up the house OR the landscaping AKA inefficient light saturation. Good light is full illumination of the entire space. You clearly seem to be a bad lighting installer and he's trying to help you 😂💨💩

I have a smaller size house in a cul-de-sac that's completely dark at night and I was thinking of just adding 4 path lights (2 in each garden bed) to have some light up front. In your opinion, do you think this would look silly without adding uplights as well?

I do festival lighting occasionally. Pull the lights away and give more angles. Flood lights should be directed at things not people unless for security. Indirectly light paths. Color on the paths and trees white on buildings. Softer lights usually work better.

When I built my house the builder "Golf course style homes" asked uf I wanted "Malibu lighting". I said sure anything that will make the house more appealing. They installed the very first picture you showed as bad lighting "flood uplights". I have had my home for over 22 years now and now my "Malibu lighting" are giving me issues with corrosion where the end of the flood light meets the portion of the assembly that connects the current. I was wondering if just replacing the assembly units or come up with a dufferen solution. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

what would you use to illuminate the walls of a two story colonial house? You pointed out that houses should not be illuminated just at the bottom. Would you use an up light 7w 2700k equivalent with narrow beam angle (40 degrees?) or wall well lights? I fear that using well lights I may end up overlap the light coverage from each light. thank you
@aklighting8292
@aklighting8292 3 года назад
I would go with the 7W 3,000k with the normal 40degree. You could use a well light, but make sure you can put a MR16 7w 3000k bulb in it instead of a Par 36 bulb - they aren't very bright.

Do you have any experience/advice for homes in the country? I have 6 acres and my house is about 400ft from the road. My house is new so I’m starting with a blank landscape. I’m almost finished with the landscaping and want to add some lighting but not to much that it distracts from the amazing night sky and stars.

@JP-kb4yi 2 года назад
@@bluenwhite2009 Yes, I ended up buying landscape lighting that can change colors and is dimmable with a remote and some strategic “down lights” and I love them for for a few reasons. 1, Being able to change the color gave me instant Christmas lights. 2 I’m able to dim lights in areas I don’t want to distract from the night sky or even turn specific list off when i don’t want them on. Lastly and unexpectedly, I discovered turquoise paired with warm white create a wonderfully relaxing environment and with the right music and stars it’s magical. Yes i know that sounds corny buy its so true and I find myself sitting outside staring at the night sky 3-4 hours every night as long as its not raining. The only downside was cost. Good quality dimmable color changing landscape lighting cost about double the price of traditional landscape lighting but it’s worth it.

I like your idea about lighting both the landscaping and the house but I still have some issues with your approach. Here is how we do lighting on our house. First, we rarely keep our lights on, though we have that option. I consider that to be narcissistic, a waste of energy and an unwanted source of light pollution. I use a programmable logic controller (PLC) that senses motion and light. So the lights come on automatically - but only as needed. Also, our lights are various colors, some warmer, some cooler various intensities, some brighter, some dimmer and they cast shadows so as to add and aid depth perception. We aim to have just the light that we need and no more light than that. We are not trying to land aircraft! While our lights are primarily functional, they fulfill that function in an aesthetically pleasing manner. For us, that sums up good lighting.
@aklighting8292
@aklighting8292 2 года назад
I agree with what you are saying. I think I need to add a disclaimer: I can't capture what the lights really look like on camera. The lights tend to seem brighter than they really are. Second disclaimer is: The longer I'm in this industry, the more I learn. I'm trying to show basics to lighting rather than a complex design. BTW Sounds like your house looks beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

@@aklighting8292 No problems. We live off-grid in the middle of a National forest and our house, while quite nice, isn’t a mansion (as we don’t need or want one). There is however a “posh” subdivision close by, complete with golf course and some people who live there want to show off their large and expensive houses and they really light them up. I guess that’s why I have an aversion to excessive lighting! One of my MS degrees was in IT, so I know a bit about control systems. I find them to be very useful not only for lighting but also many other agricultural and household homestead uses. Well worth learning.

Some good examples, but also some not so good. More lighting does not equal "good" lighting. Some "good" examples here are over-lighted. Even and subtle lighting is the key. The screaming "look at me" lighting of a home is obnoxious. The "scalloped" effect of spotlighting can work against the architecture of the home. In that case, and very even wall wash is preferable - if the entire wall has to be lit. Lighting only the landscape is not "bad" lighting when it is done well and in relation to the home, particularily if the home has adequate wall mounted fixtures.

I understand what you're saying and completely agree. I've made this channel to help people who aren't professional lighting designers. This channel is made for people who are going to amazon or Home Depot to get their lights and install them poorly. I've also done lighting long enough that I know everyone has their own preference - I prefer more light on a home and I know not everyone likes subtle lighting.

You need to give consideration for how much of your lighting is too bright and pointed at the sky contributing to the increase in light pollution now that LEDs are so prevalent. GOOD lighting should be subtle and no hamfisted and should take into account the natural environment. Light like a cinematographer not a prison warden.

Hi. Your bad lighting shows the entire house in one plain still picture which clearly gives us the opportunity to look over the placement, but when you go to the good light segment, you move around way too much! You focus more on placement vs the overall outcome. It's very distracting. And it would be very helpful to show a still of the bad & good side by side or one above & one below in one collage. Your good lighting has too much going on to appreciate & comprehend ... the music is also distracting...tone it down. Otherwise...great info!!
@milecuvalo

Sorry, but this is pointless. Your bad examples are shown from like 40 meters away, and your good ones from 2 meters away. And also, some people like to use LED lights for decorative purposes, not to just light up everything. And for that, some small light is just fine!
@FatalMusa

A homeowner should light the house in a manner they feel looks best. Neither of these are good or bad. This is a cosmetic decision and up to the owner. You may be an authority on installation and maintenance. But esthetics are subjective. Each person should do what they like most. Not what Adam says. Don't become a light snob, be helpful and provide unbiased advice of what is popular, sustainable, and within the owner's budget. But don't tell them this or that is bad because of how it looks.
