Me and my co workers terracing a steep hillside with railroad ties. Used 4+6 2 ft in ground with 10inch Simpson strong ties into the railroad tie. Song by the Donkeys called lower the heavens ( not my music)

This is amazing! Great job. I am busy searching for ideas to save my steep hill behind my house from erosion.

How did you decide the depth of the terrace? I would think they'd be deeper, to allow for growing and tending plants, or even to make a patio-like area. It looks great, just appears unusable, or less usable than it should be.

It is largely dictated by the slope of the hillside. The greater the depth of each terrace, the taller each retaining wall must be.

This looks great. Very professional and usable. I wish to do the same to my slope while planting. Is there a "how to" guide for us novices?

Fred Ramirez thanks and well I don’t know about a guide lol but it all depends on how much slope you have for the height of ties and etc.

How Deep are your post holes? Is it best to put concrete in our post holes or not?

We went at least 2ft down, and depending on your soil, and how much rain etc. you will need concrete.

Looks really nice but isn't it better to put a concrete instead of wood beams? Won't it rot fast?
