I was homeless for nearly a year due to crappy circumstances, and I literally used to watch your videos in a Denny's booth wifi all night to learn modern tech stacks. Ended up getting a job at a software company remotely, and was able to get a long-term motel room and then a house. Crazy to think about. I really appreciate all you've done to teach technology graciously, and freely. I'm gonna miss you, man!

Mattias, I'm both SO excited for your new chapter and feel really sad that you're closing this chapter of your life (for now). You were one of the very first tech youtubers I talked to when I first started, and I seriously loved all of our deep conversations about life, tech, youtubing, and mental health. Getting to meet you and Isa in Sweden last summer was absolutely a highlight of my year, and Scott and I reminisce often about that night. I love that you're following a passion of yours and found a great intersection between code and mental health -- I can't help but think this has been brewing and in the works for many months! I know you're going to love working as a developer again, and that the impact you make there will be immeasurable and profound too.Thank you so much for creating and leading this incredible community on RU-vid; you've been such an incredible role model to me and will continue to be so 💖Sending so much love and energy to you and Isa as you step into the next chapter of your life.

I totally understand mental health. I struggled with suicide in my early teens. And was in the mental health system for several years. Funny that my desire to be a developer is what ended up making me want to get better. I spent all of my time in mental hospitals reading programming books, and writing code on paper. This was at a time when they would often give your thorazine. This was way back in the late 90s, early 2000s. My ability to be a good programmer is what helped me rise above my circumstances. As I get older, and social media exposes more people. I find that people I wouldn't even expect, are suffering mental issues. I use to be ashamed of my past, but now I think it's my greatest strength. From being institutionalized for 2 years, to a near 20 year career as a developer. Don't underestimate the power of your message and platform here.

When I was 22 I lost my last parent which was my mother and now that I'm 25, after struggling with depression for over 10 years, it is very important that you leave any toxic environment you are in. Whether it is your job, your household or any other relationship. If it does bad things to you, drop out. I have been so often attempting to end it all that I've came to that conclusion.

Hey, MPJ! I just now saw this on my feed when I opened RU-vid, so I didn't get to attend the Goodbye Live Stream event, and I'm sad I missed it... But! I just wanted to tell you that YOUR videos helped me execute a career reboot: I shut down my "working stiff at a dead-end job" self, and installed a fresh new "passionate IT professional" operating system. Now I'm working with big data and solving interesting problems for a living, and it's all because of content creators and virtual mentors like YOU, who helped me pick up tech skills in my spare time. YOUR videos in particular were essential study material while I was working on my Front-End Web Developer Nanodegree at Udacity. I am a new man today, barely recognizable from my 5-years-ago self, and YOU played a central part in that transformation. Thank you for everything you've done, for me and for this community. I hope this change of pace helps you heal, and gives you the time and perspective necessary to decide on your next move. Much love and gratitude, from Iowa, USA, James

I have taught hundreds of students to be full stack Javascript Engineers at a leading US Bootcamp and can't tell you how much you have helped our community of ambitious but nervous career-changers. You have helped them see that this work can be fun and accessible. You helped them navigate challenging new concepts. Both helped make their journeys easier. I used to give links to your videos to students as they struggled with specific concepts from time-to-time as a complement to what we did. Sometimes the enthusiasm and joy of your videos gave them a needed respite from the rigors and challenges of our program (all while moving their skills forward). When I started noticing they were discovering you and passing around your videos amongst themselves, I danced a little jig. They were learning to use the web to advance their own knowledge and they found you as helpful and empowering as I had hoped. Thank you for your years of contribution to our community. We will miss you.

I didn't keep up with university because I was also working full time at the time and it eventually became too much. Today, pretty much a month ago now marks my first year working a new job as a developer and I still refer back to your videos when I need a refresher on a concept! Right now I'm learning about unit testing from you because the projects I'm working on have become so large I can't keep them in my head anymore. Thank you for creating this archive of knowledge.

My 15 year old sister was diagnosed with anorexia exactly a year ago. Her weight dropped so low she started having problems with her heart and other organs. She has been in and out of a hospital for months, but the hardest part of the disorder is her not realizing she is ill. It has affected our whole family, and it's difficult as we can't do much else than wait and pray for her. Mental health is not like any other physical injury. It can't be treated from the outside, and these wounds heal painfully slowly. They require an enormous amount of understanding from others and strength from the patient. Always make sure the people around you know they have you to rely on when it gets hard.

❤️❤️💔😭 oh gee that got me teary and feeling sad, and also so happy for you and your new adventure! What a loss, but also a change that needs to happen. Thanks for making funfunfunction and sharing yourself with us. You've helped me a lot. I'm a self taught Dev and I was so stuck, I thought I'd never get JavaScript and then I found Funfunfunction and it just clicked! Thanks for you passion and honesty and jokes. There's so much good in your videos, I'll continue watching the old ones :) Mindler sounds like a great company, we need more people like you working in mental health. I look forward to hearing more about it. You'll be greatly missed! All the best, stay curious and don't forget your towel ❤️

I have already watched this 7 months ago but sometimes I do watch it because being someone who don't know anything about coding and finding this guy who can give you his energy even from only one video is something unbelievable, I hope you'll grow wherever you go. Stay happy man!! Wish you a good luck, and if you'll ever came back to this, I'll always there as your supporter, fan, student and many more🙂

And today Brad Traversy announced he's doing something similar, although not permanently, he's "taking a vacation of RU-vid". I guess teaching programming is so exhausting because technology is changing so fast it's freaking difficult to keep pace with it and learn the new stuff in timely manner. All the best to you and I hope you'll find what you're looking for. Greetings from Prague.

It definitely is hard. But I think the key is to just do whatever interests you the most in tech. But also sometimes you just need a break :)

Having been interested in becoming a programmer, I found on youtube the best programmer channels and you are among one of them, I enjoyed your story and your courage to share it, so I immediately went and subscribed to your channel and I will continue watching your videos, I hope that you come back even if it is just to know that you are well, God bless your life MPJ.

NPJ You made me tear up brother! Your videos were a huge help in me landing my first professional position at the age of 37 years old. I was a high school dropout and also failed at college after the military. However, I never gave up on programming and with help from your videos, FreeCodeCamp, and LaunchCode I was able to finally PROVE my skill. I still direct people to your videos and even rewatch them myself when my other client work pulls me too far away from JS client work and I need a refresher.

This is the first Fun Fun Function video that I came across because I was referred to it by a link in a web development preparation module. Sad to learn that you have already said goodbye over 7 months ago. However, I am glad to hear that you will be contributing to a meaningful and important cause that is dear to you. Please continue being a blessing and encouragement to everyone around you. Take care and hope to learn more of your continuing work in the future.

Thank you for all that you have provided, selflessly, to the world. The origins of my path as an engineer can directly be drawn to the first handful of FFF videos. It would not be without a sense of serendipity that yesterday was the first day of my dream job as CTO of a small startup. I may have not made it here without the education you provided. We will probably never meet, but I hope you know that, at minimum, you changed the life of one person in a very substantial way. Thank you.

I have enjoyed watching your videos for a long time now. I have had times when I wasn't enjoying my job, and I'd go into the office on Monday not thrilled to be there. I'd see the youtube update saying I had a new FFF to watch, and I'd do that before anything else. "Good Monday Morning" was an awesome start for my week. At times when my motivation was suffering, I'd rewatch the episode where you're trespassing in the quarry in the rain, talking about having the same problem, and that would make me feel a bit better. You talked a lot about the human side of tech, about jobs, about user happiness, about developer happiness, and about making it meaningful, and I appreciate that a lot. A really important thing I've learned from you, and especially important as a leader of a team, is to watch out for signs of emotional struggles in my teammates, friends and colleagues. It really does happen to everyone, and having some solid support at the right times is vital. I know people who are alcoholics, some in recovery and some still suffering. I know people who have struggled with depression, anxiety, and other things. I feel that there are things I can do for the people around me, and that I have a responsibility to not ignore those things. Nothing stays the same forever, so it's natural that FFF would evolve, and natural that you would need to do more things in your career. I will still be re-watching episodes at times, and I'll still refer younger developers to episodes (because your explanations of things are far more entertaining than mine). I hope your new path is as incredible as FFF has been. You've reached a lot of people, and brought us learning and fun. You have made a difference in the world. I have no doubt that you will continue to help people wherever you go and whatever you do. You have a passion for that and it shows. Go start your new adventure! Whenever you again feel the need to record a video and share it, I'll definitely be part of your audience.

Hey mate. Thank you for all the videos over the years. I found your channel when I moved to Bangkok in 2018 and immediately broke my hip (lol). Your videos while I was isolated for the next 8 months of recovery were really awesome and something which I genuinely looked forward to! You and David always struck me as cool guys. Best wishes on the new job.
