Goodbye Granadaland is a one-off special in which Peter Kay takes a look around Granada Studios in Manchester which is closing after 57 years. The programme also features interviews and clips from some of Granada's best known and loved shows, and a few lesser known ones too. Narrated by Suranne Jones. Broadcast on ITV, Saturday 15th June 2013. The music used in the opening credits and in other parts of the programme is The Crunch by The Rah Band.

Granada’ s output was testament to the fact that popular can still be quality.It was never condescending or elitist,it did not have a “ mission statement “ nor a hidden agenda it just made good programmes. Work open takes me to Manchester these days,when the taxi takes me down Quay St and past it’s redundant entrance I have a little sadness just as I do on Kirkstall Road in Leeds.The golden age of public service commercial television has passed , perhaps I should be thankful that I was fortunate enough to watch and enjoy and be informed by it.

I loved Granada Studios. I was born in Manchester but moved Yorkshire when I was 12 but I’m Lancashire through and through. I remember going to the studios in 1998 it was brilliant. I’ve been to both Coronation Streets at Granada and MediaCity

This was another department where Britain had the right idea! Their TV stations had proper corporate identities which served as their on-air identification(call-sign), Granada, HTV West, Anglia, Heritage, Trident, ATV, Thames/London Weekend(Thames, Monday-to-Friday, London Weekend, Saturday & Sunday), and of course BBC-TV. Here in Australia our metropolitan stations hid behind their channel numbers and, with the exception of a period in the 1980s when the Australian Television Network(ATN-Sydney, HSV-Melbourne, BTQ-Brisbane, ADS-Adelaide and TVW-Perth) identified itself as such but got timid again and hid behind its channel number, 7. Australian TV stations should've adopted the British practice and given themselves REAL identities!

I got my first proper job at Granada Studios Tour in 1988. I remember the induction day. We all had to meet in the foyer at Granada TV. We were shown around the tour whilst it was still under construction. Behind the studios there used to be a pub called the Pineapple, long gone now! Don’t recognise Manchester these days.

living in canada, these sort of things are often over looked, but that's when globle and a few other renaged stations like cbc, would buy up a lot of those shows, and we would catch them from time to time. britian rocked the world during the 60's 70's and 80's, British shows were the best.

The old Granada Studios are still there in July 2021. Now named " The Manchester Studios" with Studios 2, 6, 8 and 12 retained, refurbished and available to use. Unlike BBC Television Centre, London, they kept the majority of their larger studios. Excellent.

Back in 1969 I was coming home from High School in Newcastle(Australia, not England) and walking along Hunter Street, I saw in the window of the Radio Rentals shop, the first colour TV I ever saw. It was a Baird brand, stood on lathe-turned legs, had a 26" screen(it was showing a colour bar from a pattern generator) and its controls were arranged down the right of the screen. From top down were 11 channel selectors which also turned the set on and off(at my guess). I think you pulled them out to turn the set on at a given station then turned them to fine-tune the signal. They were labelled BBC1, BBC2, then ITV1 through to ITV9, then came all the usual picture and sound controls, Volume and Tone(for sound) Brightness & Contrast(typical on any TV) and, for this set, Colour and Tint(not that PAL-based sets really needed a tint control). I was amazed by it and, again, the Brits had the right idea. This was 1969, I was only 14 at the time, colour TV was still 6 years into the future back then. Push-button station selection on Australian TV sets came with the second and successive colour sets from 1976 onwards.

We rented our TV and VCR from Granada from 1988 to 1997. Fantastic service. I remember one Saturday morning in 1992, I came downstairs at 9.00am, and tried to play a video, and the VCR would not work. Dad was making breakfast, and he rang Granada who came out at 1.00pm and replaced the VCR. Great customer service. You don't get that now in 2021.

I've always thought this a slightly odd title. 'Granadaland' wasn't another name for the Quay Street studios, in the same way that ATV Land was synonymous with the Broad Street studios in Birmingham. 'Granadaland' was the whole of the North (later North-West) region. ITV should have known this. Perhaps they did and didn't care?

Jake Jones *was. The name "Granada Television" no longer is present on their broadcast licence. Thames was made up of two original ITV companies anyway. The programme above is looking at Granada based on their vast mass of output, not whether it was an original ITV company or not.

I disagree.
@aidanlunn7441
@aidanlunn7441 8 лет назад
Jake Jones Well there's no mention at all of Granada being an "original ITV company" in the programme so it's based on the company's output as that's what the clips featured in this programme are of, so I doubt it matters whether you agree or not. What matters is what's in the video.

In Australia we had a 2-hour show hosted by Daryl Somers called "Hey, Hey It's Saturday" which was produced at Station GTV-Melbourne, and went out over Station TCN-Sydney, QTQ-Brisbane, NWS-Adelaide and STW-Perth plus NBN-Newcastle, WIN-Wollongong and other regional affiliates. One of the cast of this show was Russell Gilbert, who thought of himself as a comedian but in reality was a total fuckwit. When he joined HHIS he dragged the whole show down to his gutter level. Well, Peter Kay is Granada's Russell Gilbert.
