I feel really inspired video-wise, and it’s another way that attracts me to show my photos. I’m fed up with the consumerism of social networks, people spend 3 seconds on photos that you took the time to take and edit, trying to tell a story with it. They seem to want to see 5 second reels with 19 images.. this is not for me. Whereas on RU-vid if someone clicks on your video, it means they are focused on YOUR work, in all that it’s my way of consuming on RU-vid, and I want to share with this kind of community.

Exactly. The more present I am on RU-vid, the less I see relevance (as a photographer) on IG.

What’s really killing Instagram for photography, is they keep living in 2009, with 1080px pictures, phone only support. If you post a landscape picture, unless you’re an ant, you miss every detail. So you’re condemned to making vertical crops, or trying to do a slider on 2 pics wide. They’re fully committed on Reels right now, more than anything else, to plug the hole of people leaving for Tik Tok.

I don’t disagree, but I think more than anything else, IG just isn’t the place to share photography. It’s more of a generalist app nowadays.

@@davidherring if even that. There’s only so many times I can tolerate clicking « Not interested » when being proposed a « GRWM » reel. VERO looked promising at some point, but I’m not seeing many people going on it. How about starting a trend to move to Behance?

Great content, Dave. And a good point. Everytime I see a post from someone I follow on FB or IG I also have to scroll pass two other posts from sponsored or suggested content. So I see 1/3 of what I'm one the platform for. And when I post, I only reach 9% of my followers, unless I pay ... So great advise, but maybe a big jump for us that are non-native english speakers .... But again, if you don't dare, you never gain ...

I don't think you're the only one being served these conversations on Threads - I swear to god nearly every photographer I know that uses it is ALSO seeing the same garbage everyday. That app is not even usable because of it

Right? The sad thing for me is that some of these guys/gals I use to really respect and admire their work. Now they’re making me cringe with their posts about their lack of reach, and overall hostility. So much entitlement. I guess that’s who they were and what it was about all along.

Great video man. I get served the same negative Threads conversations. It's interesting if you try to have a positive discussion, the post goes nowhere. I guess the negativity drums up more engagement so the companies serve it out to more people. It's a shame.

Dave, what an interesting idea. Yes for photography and for another set of content. There is research which shows that youth tend to be better adjusted and more resilient if they know about their parents, grandparents and their stories. Youth also tend to consume content via youtube or other media. How interesting would it be to capture family stories and make them available to far flung family members via RU-vid. No looking to get a ton of subscribers, but as a service to my grand children and great grand children. This will be a bit of a learning curve for me. Any suggestions as to how to get started with a family channel? I know it is not the RU-vid business model, but can the content be made private somehow? Lots of questions. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

I have an entire collection of family movies I ripped from VHS on a private channel that only the family has access to. We use YT to archive these videos and anyone in our family can access them anytime. It can work for sure! I think if you were starting a channel to document stories for your family, check out some documentaries that do something similar and find a style of storytelling that resonates with you. Then emulate that style with your own work as you develop your own style.

I make and post videos on here showcasing my photography, albeit a bit sporadically. It is easy to do, but one thing you didn’t really touch upon is the investment of time ‘can’ be greater, depending on how you wish to present your work. That said, it’s a nice way to document your work more thoroughly… theming it around location, or event, or camera used etc. I’ve been mixing mine with my field recording work captured on location. But, community will only really come if, like yourself, you can devote a lot of time to making the channel grow. In that regard, it really is no different to other social media growth.

There’s definitely a “time investment,” but I’d argue, like most things, what you put in is what you get out. I started with RU-vid making videos 1-2 nights a week when the kids went to bed. I’d edit until midnight, and upload. Now it’s much more systematized and part of my life flow, but I’m also benefitting from the invested time. I have never felt any benefit from any time invested in IG.

I really love your point and I am trying to start my RU-vid channel but I dont really like to make videos.. I love to take photos and not bother with video editing. But I hear your point and you are right that it is a better place now than instagramm because that is an influencer and spam jam there :D

I was there when I started, but as I got more comfortable and more efficient, it grew on me. And it’s a small sacrifice to be able to share my photography in a meaningful way.

Dave, thank you for this video. I've been following you since last Fall, you may not be an "influencer" but your RU-vid channel has inspired me more than you know. I am starting a RU-vid channel to display my travel photography. Do you think the Micro Bi-Color LED Light is sufficient for RU-vid videos or should I invest in one of their larger kits? Thanks.

That means a ton to me! Proud of you for starting your channel, and I can’t wait to see it! As for the light, you’ll be blown away at how much light Hobolite puts off. The rim light (behind me, hitting my right side in this video) is a Mini at 1%. The main light is an Avant at 10%. All of this to say, I’m sure there’s plenty on the Micro. Be sure to diffuse it though and spread the light out a bit. Worst case, make it a b-light and get something bigger down the road. Posting on You Tube requires video skills. Surely the best way to display photos online is through galleries on a blog which is about as personal as you can get.

It’s really not difficult. Davinci is free, and easy to use. Anyone could learn basics via RU-vid tutorials and be running in minutes. I agree blogs and galleries are great, but no one will see your work unless you can share it directly with them. RU-vid is a public forum.

Oh, great, let’s make youtube another instagram or whatever other social media for photographers. They’ve all failed eventually. How long till RU-vid suffers from the same issues that have plagued the other platforms? I mean sure, you can do your photowalk videos and all that, but eventually if it becomes mainstream, RU-vid too will get oversaturated and overwhelming. It’s already at a point where I can’t keep up with my favorite channels. So no, I don’t think RU-vid is it. There will be a better alternative, but right now, I don’t know if one exists. In the future if I can gather the necessary funds and right development team maybe I’ll build one myself. But we’ll see. 💯

Too many RU-vid Photographers are really just skilled videographers making videos about their "photography" - which is nothing special...despite the sappy music they play when they show their images. I actually prefer Instagram for just photos without all the external influences. The images should stand on their own. Block me, please.

"I'm not an influencer..." --> a couple of minutes later... --> "I'm a Hobolight ambassador." What?! I don't want to rain on your parade, BUT you're just another influencer selling a product. That's the gist. Be it the lights, presets, whatever. You're complaining about a "problem" you're a part of. Not very genuine, not authentic.

Ok let me define “influencer” in how I’m using it. I’m speaking about people who have a large following and sell access to that following as their “creative service.” They are a human ad. I’m a photographer. Yes, I have brand deals. Yes, I talk about products I believe in. But photography and creative services is how I make a living. I’m not a human ad. And if I’m 100% honest with you, the things that support this channel basically help this channel break even, because of what it costs to produce what I’m producing. So no, I don’t see myself as an influencer. I have influence, yes… but I hope that my influence is more philosophical and cultural. ✌🏼

I agree with 99% of this. I've been posting on RU-vid for 10 years. I'll admit I haven't been consistent over the years. I have a video with 90k views and some with 13. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason for the algorithm here on RU-vid. I never know what reach I'm going to get with each video. I have two instagram channels. One is my every day photography, portraits, landscapes, etc. I'm at 375 followers. My other channel is art model photography and I have over 12K. Instagram favors extremes. I'm excited for your success but feel you should have a much larger following. I love your work and feel if RU-vid showed it to a larger audience you would have a bigger following. I get that they are a business and need to make ad revenue. I also feel that there would be more creatives using the platform if there was actual reach. JMHO. As always, enjoy your work and perspective.

Thanks for sharing! I think it’s a combination of effort, luck, algorithm, and work ethic. I don’t think there’s a secret to social media success, but more of an alignment of those things, similar to “right place, right time.” All of this to say, the only parts of that I can control effort and ethic. So I do what I can control and see how things go!
