I got into Supertramp around 1975 Just after Crime of the Century came out, one of my best friends bought the album and it became an instant favorite of ours!!!👌👌👍👍✌✌
Supertramp really was a VERY good live band.....but this is the studio recording you're hearing. I don't know if they lip-synced on the broadcast or if whoever uploaded this video stripped out the live audio in favor of the studio recording but if you'd like to hear it ACTUALLY live look for the live in Paris video.
Although it looks as though they're playing live, they've actually used the studio track on this. Another indication of this is that it fades out instead of stopping if you take my meaning. Either that or they did record this as we see it FOR the studio recording. That's a distinct possibility.

Typically on The Midnight Special the acts would play and sing live, but having heard the studio version LITERALLY 1,000 times (I'm 60 now) I would have to say they are faking it and lip syncing. This sounds perfectly like the studio version, including all the reverb at various points with specific instruments, and the finger snapping, and they could not perfectly replicate that without a studio. That being said....what an incredible sounding song, eh???
In my opinion(and I was a band geek in highschool he he.) Supertramp has absolutely NO sucky songs. I think everything they put out was musically, professionally, top notch and polished. Big fan here.
Their music has always been FANTASTIC! ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! - BUT they themselves are OBVIOUS _ Jerks! This song if you pay attention to the lyrics makes THAT clear. Maybe some men won't agree but when you treat women as they say in this song, that is what you are. "If I never look behind me, my troubles will be few..." - doesn't matter WHAT troubles (or emotional issues they have caused) for the women they have left behind. Even the song title - Goodbye Stranger. Uhh...STRANGER! You have been LIVING with her for a time & obviously have been intimate. STRANGER! I would like to get them in a closed in room & make them listen to Alanis Morrisette performing - "You Oughta Know." None music related - you have quite the cold there Jayy. "Some they will, & some they won't & some you just can't tell, some they do & some they don't & others it's just as well." With "ladies of the night" - they ALL DO, there is no question of it. Also, he said he was "up before the dawn" & he "must be movin' on" because "sweet devotion is not for me." With "ladies of the night" I don't think it is usual to almost EVER stay with them as long as the dawn. It is usually a much quicker interaction, ALSO, there is NO QUESTION that there would EVER be "sweet devotion" with this type of BUSINESS INTERACTION - ONLY in a more PERSONAL situation. This is why it is even brought up. He is also voicing a discussion with her when he says that "I believe in what you say, is the undisputed truth, but I have to have things my own way, to keep me in my youth." Again, he wouldn't be arguing with a "lady of the night" who would be quite HAPPY to have the interaction end. He would not have to be trying to explain to her why he was leaving! So again, I REPEAT, he is just an absolute jerk, who will use women - he lists a few of them that he has used & moved on from (I know that these are probably not the real names) - then move on once he has finished enjoying himself (& staying at her home for free) - because "he has to have things (his) own way" - (like a child, who doesn't think of anybody but himself.) There is NO DEFENCE for using people & thinking nothing of their feelings - just to get what you want - when you want it & however long you want it. THAT type of person DOES NOT BELONG IN SOCIETY with other people. Since a society IS BUILT & MAINTAINED by people looking after & thinking about themselves AND OTHERS! It is when you SELFISHLY DON'T CONSIDER OTHERS that society BREAKS DOWN & GETS DESTROYED!
