I’m an American and I absolutely LOVE Stompin’ Tom. I got introduced to his music through an old band mate of mine who used to travel up to Ontario every year to play bluegrass. He brought back all those wonderful Stompin’ Tom records and I was just so incredibly inspired. As far as I’m concerned, he really is up there with all the greats, like Hank Williams and Woodie Guthrie. He had this extraordinary talent for bringing the backcountry and byways of Canada’s broad land to the listener in a way that really made you fall in love with Canada and want to visit it. Canadians and Americans are all part of one big North American continental landscape. And Stompin’ Tom has certainly taken his rightful place amongst all the folk and country music legends that have done our respective countries proud. 😊🇨🇦
Back in 1969 I was working underground at Frood -Stobie some of the guys said they were going to be at the Frontenac Hotel on Saturday. I got through the door just as Stompin Tom started into Sudbury Saturday night. He really did go everywhere back then,I went through Barry’s Bay that same year and he was playing there, probably on his way to Pembroke, Pettawawa.
I met Tom when he played my school in the 70s. Please get your kids listing to his music because he sings about small town Canada and no one else does.
“A champion of the human spirit.” A great artist, a patriot in the best sense of the word, an inspiration, a musical and lyrical lifelong companion to anyone lucky enough to know his music.
True Canadiana in every sense of the word. Humble and a show of pride across Canada with all the small towns in between. A man who is and always be the original OG of Canada. He obviously found many a stompin grounds for you and me.
Oll son! I was there for the man's funeral in Peterborough Ontario Canada it was held in the Peterborough Petes hockey arena Arena. I'm in an Ontario Canadian. But you down there in Texas have Waylon Jennings Willie Nelson mister David Allan Coe
A shock to my system. Bob Powel (may he be forgiven) brought Stomping Tom (he had a 'g' back then) to England in the '60s. Microwave had just arrived and we soothed our scorched palates as Tom regaled us with his imported Stomping Board at a noted Hampshire pub with ample parking. I need to apologise. I thought he was a travelling Canadian comedy act. But the crowd took to him, even 'Bud the Spud', and he was immune to all criticism (which I believe has kept him going all these years). Canada has Gordon Lightfoot and Stompin' Tom. Both proud Canadian troupers.
Great clip but I really do not think that they do enough to put him in the proper light. Not that Tom would have asked for better or bigger about himself, but he was more of a giant than he is made out to be in this clip. I really like the part about him being shamelessly unashamed about everything he stood for. Canada and humanity can use more like that.
Look for a CBC show from the 70's called Country Time. He did a couple of appearances on that show. He also had a show on the C B C where he went to different spots across the country. I cannot remember the name.
