"The Lufthansa Heist" really was the biggest robbery in American history at that time. As they said in the beginning, this movie is based on a true story. And Henry Hill couldn't stay out of crime, even when he was in the witness protection program, and that got both Henry and Karen Hill kicked out of the government's protection program. "Jimmy the Gent" Burke really is believed to be the leader of the gang that stole the Lufthansa money, and is believed to have murdered nearly everyone involved in that theft. They and Tommy DeSimone were all associates of the Lucchese crime family.

We lose Ray Liotta from the cast, but we do pick up that great American, Joe Bob Briggs, the drive-in movie critic of Rockwall, Texas. Later, Henry Hill turned up in of all places, North Platte, Nebraska, where he was associated with a restaurant, when he wasn't getting busted for drugs. I never met him, but I know some people who knew him pretty well there.

The thing about henry's relationship with his wife, he's a criminal. He lies, cheats, steals, and hurts people for a living. You think it's something you can turn off when you go home? And she knew what he was pretty early in the game. So how much sympathy does she really deserve? There's a scene in the Sopranos, a mob tv show, where the mob boss's wife goes to a therapist and tries to play the victim and he says the same thing. She's an accomplice to his crimes, not a victim.

I remember from an interview that Viggo had to sit in the makeup chair for hours to get those tattoos on his body every day he was on set, and it took just that long to get them off of him. It was such a pain in the butt for him that he just said, "Fuck it. I'm going to get something to eat", and left the set after shooting. While still in tattoos, mind you. So he goes to this one cafe that turned out to be a hangout for the local Russians in the neighborhood. Viggo walked in, and everyone just stopped. This was a literal "pin drop" moment. He was kind of confused as to why they stopped as he sat down, but put it down to being an outsider. One of the waitresses, I think, recognized him and told the owner, a little Russian grandma, who it was. She immediately grabbed by the hand and dragged him to the kitchen sink and told him to scrub. Apparently they thought he was a Russian mobster which was scary for them, but pretending to be one was down right suicidal. If the real bad guys found one pretending to be one on their turf, there would not have been body left for identification.😬

Agreed. What i love most about Goodfellas is that it doesn’t romanticize or glorify the mafia lifestyle. It shows it for what it truly is, a group of arrogant, selfish, and power hungry shmucks who wont hesitate to stab their best friend in the back if it benefits them.
@brandonb.5304
@brandonb.5304 2 года назад
@@dogman6687 Yeah, um The Godfather doesn’t romanticize anything. ****SPOILERS**** Marlon Brando ends up being gunned down in the first hour, Sonny is shot to death trying to protect his sister from a brother-in-law who took money to betray his family, Michael is forced to become a ruthless mob boss after being a WWII war hero and ends up killing his own brother for betraying him…after his first wife is blown up in a car bomb meant for him and his second wife leaves him and aborts his child. And Vito’s entire family is killed by a local mafia chieftain in Sicily, forcing him to flee to America alone as a 9 year old boy. Wouldn’t exactly call that romanticizing the mafia.
@dogman6687
@dogman6687 2 года назад
@@brandonb.5304 its been a long time since ive seen the films, but just because it doesnt shy away from the violence and drama of it all doesnt mean it doesn’t glorify that lifestyle. Were given a crime family to root for, one that values honor, respect, loyalty, etc. and a leader who can be viewed as somewhat honorable compared to his fictional peers and most certainly compared to real like mob bosses. Everything that young Henry idolizes and believes about the lifestyle are present in the Godfather. Goodfellas shows us that all of that is a load of horseshit. There is no honor in a life of crime, they rule out of fear not respect, there are no larger than life figures. Theyre just people. People driven by normal human things like greed, lust, and fear. And even if you still argue that those films do not fully romanticize it, it undoubtedly started the trend of movies that do so. It made people admire a crime lord like Vito

I used to watch Goodfellas at least once a week, for a good while. The storytelling is just top notch. And yes, most of the things shown in the movie did really happen, according to the book Wiseguy, which was essentially Henry's autobiography, as told to author Nicholas Pileggi. That's the book the film is based on. A lot of things are left out, but it's amazing how Scorsese and his editor Thelma Schoonmaker pull together all these specific details from the book, with some occasional artistic license, and craft such a compelling narrative.

Henry Hill was born June 11, 1943. He passed away on June 12, 2012 at the age of 69 of health complications due to heart disease of his heavy smoking. He also had a heart attack before he passed away. Henry Hill died in hospital in Los Angeles, California. Also after his witness protection, Henry Hill continued committing crimes and going in and out of jail or prison every once in awhile. You can watch some Henry Hill interviews on RU-vid if you are interested in knowing what he was really like.

Here's a fun Goodfellas movie fact....the guy playing the FBI agent talking to Henry and Karen about going into witness protection is THE actual FBI agent who handled Henry and Karen in real life. I watch a lot of criminal documentaries and watched him talk about his role. If you want to see a really good "based on a true story" Mafia film,you need to watch "Donnie Brasco" with Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. It's about the very first FBI agent who infiltrated the mob during the 1970's. I really enjoy your reactions. Keep them coming!

Also something worth noting: With the exception of Henry Hill and Karen Hill, everyone in this movie uses their real first name but a fake last name. Jimmy Conway in the movie was Jimmy Burke in real life, Paul Cicero was Paul Vario in real life, etc.

A funny story about when Joe Pesci shoots Spider at 19:44. Spider (Michael Imperioli) did his own stunt, for the scene, and cut himself for real. He had to be taken to the hospital, so the emergency room thought he was shot for real. So they rushed him to be examined right away. When the hospital realized he was an actor and the bullet wounds were fake, and all that happened was he cut himself on broken glass. They sent him to the waiting room where he waited a few hours. LOL

Dasha, the story goes like this. In the bar, sitting around the table, the scene was supposed to end with Ray Liotta saying to Joe Pesci "you're funny". Pesci told only the Director that he was gonna say "waddya mean I'm funny, what makes me so funny". If you pay attention, you see Ray Liotta look off camera at the director cause he doesn't know what's happening. He quickly jumps in and it's a great scene. Invented by Pesci, agreed to by Scorsese, and ad-libbed by Ray Liotta.

Great reaction. Some parts in real life were different. I lived in the neighborhood and knew Henry. My grandfather owned a restaurant and I made so much money cause our customers were all mafia. I also am good friends with the guy that plays Tommy’s character when he was young. He’s also in A Bronx Tale.

Great reaction! Great movie! When this movie came out, I just started rehearsals for a play and my character was New York mafia. My love interest in the play was a girl named Karen, so I watched this about 100 times to get Ray Liotta's voice/mannerisms and mixed it with Joe Pesci's quick temper and Robert Deniro's look. I always love the way Liotta says Karen.

According to Michael Franzese who was a capo before he managed to leave (not an easy task), Henry Hill was a sad soul. He was only a low level associate. He was a drug addict and according to Franzese (who was mentioned in the movie ... one of guys at the bar) he saved his life at least twice. Once when he didn't turn him in for dealing drugs. As long as they didn't officially know the families would turn a blind eye as long as they got their cut. Franzese told a story of a made man who committed suicide because he got caught dealing drugs and was so terrified of the repercussions.
