PRO TIP: Tear the box tops off of every capacitor, contactor, or xfmr you use - then stick them in a binder clip together and keep that in your cup-holder or console and you have your restock shopping list for when you get back to the shop or the supply house.

Ted, I'm not in the HVAC trade but did DIY my own home after I saw the work the previous "professionals" had done on it. I've been watching your videos a few years because as an engineer and a business manager I appreciate your approach and as someone who grew up South of the Dixon Line and now lives in Seattle I appreciate your personal dialog and banter with the customers.

In Calif. we had So. Cal. Edison representatives actually going door to door trying to "sell" their load controllers a few months ago. I basically told them to get lost without being too rude. We have enough solar and battery back up to run the AC even when the power goes off, don't need their intrusion into our lives.

I know Ted likes to use Nest thermostats as clay pigeons, but they have a best of both worlds arrangement with SCE that's way better than the load control in this video. If you're signed up, SCE will *ask* your Nest to raise the thermostat during "rush hour". The customer can override it at will. And to top that, the Nest will pre-cool your house before rush-hour hits.

We had load control on the HVAC, water heater, another water heater, pool pump. But that was in about 2000. The county electric has since abandoned the program. But those load control boxes still remain in line with the appliances. And they fail and cut off the device. So we have to pay an electrician for a service call to come out and bypass it.

You would be fine putting in the 55/5, all those caps have a 10% tolerance anyways, and the electric motor isn't really that sensitive to slight variations in the running capacitance...it would only slightly raise the current flowing through the AUX winding, resulting in a negligible increase in power and reduction of efficiency.

Ted. I hope that compressor capacitor lasts. I have a feeling the hermatic side will eventually fail. I have done what you done, adding a separate capacitor for the fan since the fan side was bad. It worked for 2 weeks before the hermatic side finally blew. Now i just do that temporarily until i can get the correct rating capacitor. Great video though.

On the west side of the country, our power company has radio transmitting power meters and if a customer has subscribed to the "load control" feature, they monitor the power consumption when the load control box is energized to turn off the condensing unit. After awhile of reading high energy use during the time periods that box is energized, the power company knows the low voltage wires or the load control box itself is faulty and they send out a tech to fix it. I believe they allow two "mistakes" and then remove the customer from the savings feature for a minimum of one year up to permanently banned from the program. I really hate the fact that power companies and other utility companies believe its fair game to intentionally engineer a power grid that cannot provide the service amperage that is installed, such as 100 amp or 200 amp main panels. If a panel is set for 100 or 200 amps, the structure should have access to that amperage 24x7. If the power grid cannot supply everyone with their maximum consumption due to old or failing to upgrade the power grid, thats when I say they need to be forced to provide what they have sold their customers and avoid all of the gadgets that force customers to contribute to a delinquency issue. BTW, its reasonable to put in a larger cap such as a 55/10 or a 60/5 without any issues? More is okay but never less than, correct?
@jovangrbic97
@jovangrbic97 2 года назад
Going up or down 10% should be fine either way, but higher is not better. The run cap controls the current flowing through the auxiliary winding, which is rated for a certain amperage. Too high, you burn out the coil, too low and it doesn't flow enough power to start up. A tad higher capacitance works fine, giving the compressor a little bit more power at the cost of efficiency. Going lower reduces the starting torque, but as long as you have enough to overcome the stand still resistance you're fine. Capacitors loose capacity with time, and you often see 50/5 marked caps still running the compressor even when they measure only 40uF. So there really is plenty of fudge factor to play with...
@greendryerlint
@greendryerlint 2 года назад
Just wait until everyone has electric cars. The value of the capacitor affects the 'time delay' of the AC phase shift that runs one or more of the motor windings. It is not just used for starting. If you use one too big or too small for the way the motor is designed, the 2 phases/motor windings will 'fight' each other and you'll have at best an inefficient motor that won't run at full speed and wastes power, at worst one that heats up and burns out. A few percent off each way probably won't matter. Think of it like if the cam and ignition timing on your car was firing two cylinders at the wrong times so they are both trying to do the power stroke against each other instead of cooperating.
@etherealrose2139
@etherealrose2139 2 года назад
The utility companies make zero guarantees on generation, delivery, and the amount. You are perfectly free to generate your own power. Making juvenile "demands" such as yours is exactly what causes issues. You can't just slap in a few thousand new homes and expect the power generation to keep up ESPECIALLY when idiotic politics shuts down coal, oil, and gas plants that have a bit more leeway in generation. Even then you need to add more generators at some point, more power lines, and more substations and transformers for load balancing. When you get environmentalists dictating how much it costs (fees and permits) and what fuel source you can use... it doesn't make sense to add capacity to a strained system. You'll just get penalized for it. It makes more sense to load shed with rolling blackouts a la California. That's how sad and pathetic it's come down to. Migrating from hydrocarbons is probably a good idea eventually... but demanding they be cut NOW with no replacement AND increasing electric usage due to it being "greener" Lol actually makes things way worse due to lack of capacity. It's mind boggling to hear them shout to use less fuel but give us more electric. As of right now you cannot have one without the other.

Have you thought about carrying individual capacitors (35, 40, 45, 50, 55 & 3, 5,7.5, 10) instead of dual caps? Then you just grab a 50 and a 5 - strap it in and waalaa. I'll do sometimes 300 or more cap repairs a summer and having individuals makes it a lot easier for stocking. "accidentally" not hook it back up.....been there done that....haha

Talk about cheating the utility ....I did a central air and electrical service change for a widow lady in Central Fl. Her husband (a carpenter by trade) had added a new kitchen , dining room master bedroom and bath 20 yrs earlier. When we finished , found out that addition had been tied in to the SEU service cable behind the service drop. Had to run a new feed to the breaker panel for the addition. I estimated she saved $20, 000 to $25,000 in electric billing.

Those darn utility company load controls they are a scam. Glad you decommissioned it looked like whoever installed it did a garbage wiring job too. And they don't save the consumer money either because it does not address Amp draw at start up. Which just makes the utility bills go up more during times of high demand. A better solution is a soft start kit but might not be calling it by the correct name but is designed to prevent a hard start of the ac compressor and I know a company makes one where if power goes out you can temperarely power the ac unit to a portable generator. And I know some of them keep the amperages level. And if a homeowner asks a professional like you to hook them up. Won't run into the issues they had by having that junky utility company load center hooked up when you can buy better ones. That are not a utility company scam. And also most utility companies hire third party contractors to hook them up. Who cut corners so the utility company does not have to pay real pros to do the job right. Thank God you found the problem before serous damage was done to the condenser. Due to an improper instalation and a junky utility company promoted product. VS real products that actually regulate loads and Amps correctly like soft start kits. And products that keep Amp draws level and prevent spikes and surges.
