How does pulling up on a pipe unclog the vent? Is it that the vent is meant for air escape and not water and the water is running downhill into the vent? You remedied the issue by pulling it back up.
Water collects in the pipe and flows to the furnace and out the drain. The entire run of exhaust pipe must slope towards the furnace to make sure there is not a buildup of water blocking the exhaust.
