Goodman Heat Pump with HORRIBLE Duct System & How I FIXED It!!

The customer recently bought this home with new Goodman heat pump split unit HVAC equipment and they were experiencing high humidity levels on the second floor. They called out another company and the tech added refrigerant hoping that would fix the issue. After realizing that didn't work, they called me out for a second opinion. First thing I did was hook up all my ‪@FieldpieceProducts‬ wireless probes with the ‪@measureQuick‬ app to get a full system diagnosis. I found the system running with little to no superheat and a low temperature drop (checking temps at the grilles in the space). I then hopped in the attic to inspect the air handler and duct system. Found the problem!! This duct system was hanging on by a thread. No screws, hardly any tape, several major gaps, etc! This unit was pulling in a lot of attic air! It is time for a little overhaul on this duct system. In this video I show my process on repairing the ductwork and removing refrigerant to get the system running right, hope you enjoy. LET'S DO SOME WORK!!

Holy cow! That air is going to take the path of least resistance. I'm a commercial HVAC tech at a Community College and I can believe a contractor would do that horrible work. I'm a Mechanical Designer, lotta years of commercial and industrial HVAC design under me. It has taken me a long time to accept the "standards" of residential HVAC work, especially all the flex used for duct systems, but I understand the use of it. I've always had a commercial contractor do my HVAC work and had sheet metal ductwork used in the houses I've built. With that said, you do some fine work that I take no exception to. Your workmanship, attention to detail, thoroughness and technical skills are outstanding. I've been watching residential HVAC videos for a couple of months and the quality of installations out there is downright sickening. It's a shame people put more focus and money into the quality of their kitchen countertops and finish of a toilet paper holder than the heating and cooling system of their home. Don't tell me they can't get educated on the subject, they know all about sound systems and wireless networks.... Keep up the good work. I enjoy watching your channel, Anti-DIY and Comfort Plus. All three of you do great work.

Nothing wrong with flex IF it is installed correctly. Not using galv elbows at the drops and keeping the flex as taut as possible and properly suspended will increase the static pressure dramatically. I taught ducting for several years and that is one of the most understood and overlooked areas of the hvac industry.

22 years in in HVAC business in Chicago-land. God job , you did improve this bad install for sure. The run coming of the top looks like have a hard bend. Allays add an hard sheet metal elbow regardless on return and supply duct when you have a hard bend. Flexible ducts are used for straight run nor for sharp bend. Flexible duct cases turbulence and slows down air pressure. I rarely use flexible duct, only in rear occasions . Positive thing about flexible duct is less time consumption.

Definitely better than what was originally there, but that run out of the top of the supply plenum was choked really bad. Flex isn’t meant to turn that tight. Should have put an elbow on the collar or if there wasn’t enough height to do that, should’ve dovetailed the elbow in put it directly in the plenum without a collar.

One can make a job just going back and fixing issues like in this video. We fixed a 1/2" tapered down to 0" hole that was about 20 inches long. It was at the beginning of the supply duct. It had been pumping our air outside for 10 years or so. All the guy had to do was hold it up when he screwed it to the unit. Also, no tape or mastic either. The outcome is we now have more air coming out of the ducts than before.

Finally found a couple of vids to help me with my problem. This one and your one on building a plenum. I got dealt a crappy hand with my house and have old lazy 10 inch ductwork with asbestos, and dents in it from each time someone bumped their head into it over the years. Nobody will touch it until that assbestos is gone. So I was freaking out a bit but then I remembered my old Navy training and it all came back to me. Turns out I just need to gut everything, including the boots, and replace with a new plenum so I can cut a new take off for the new ducts. I was just wondering if you had a way to ballpark what size I can get away with. I have 5 vents and 2 intakes. Want to see if I can get away with running 6 inch round from the takeoff. Was going to go maybe a 12" to 6" tee for the take off and run that maybe 20 feet one side of the tee, and directly above for the other side of the tee. Figured air might be like networking or water where you need twice the flow to supply 2 outlets with the desired flow. If it were 3 outlets, would have to do 3 times, so 18". etc.
