I should have mentioned a couple of other things in my post above. I, too live in Michigan where furnaces must always be ready to work properly. Notice this repairman made a temporary seal with silicone which likely would have sealed the unit without installing the Goodman replacement gasket. I totally respect his commitment to doing the job completely without charging for two service calls. I salute you, sir!

Most Guy's you need a new furnace heat exchanger is cracked , i have seen it on another site where the collector box had a crack...New furnace needed

Commercial tech here 20 years gotta love it. Like others mentioned I also carry red HI temp caulk at all times. I'd throw that on there seal it up and never look back. The hi temp or rtv is much better than any gasket you could put on there. I do usually try to bring equipment back to its original condtion, unless its a known reaccuring issue. A new gasket in this case may be a call back even if its a few years down the road.

I changed a heat exchanger in an old mid eff. furnace, the manufacture tech support said to use hi temp silicone instead of a new gasket. Similar thing so its all gravy. Nice fix either way! Thanks for the content.

Thank you for this video, I have a Goodman furnace model: GM9S960603BN. What would be that p/n for that gasket? Could it be easier to preventatively add a layer of the high-temperature silicon adhesive around that plastic cover for now as my Goodman furnace is not experiencing that issue yet?

New subscriber here; nice to meet you, bro. (I'm from the Mississippi Gulf Coast.) In my opinion, you did the right thing with the silicone; it does the same job the gasket does I'm pretty sure the customer would've done the same thing to his own furnace, had he have chosen to service his own unit... anything to get some heat until a new gasket can be obtained. Keep up the awesome videos you put out. Very informative.

I never have the luck you did getting the old recoup cover off. I always end up breaking them, which is why I always get the recoup cover. Something we have found is that high temp silicon holds up better over time than the gasket Goodman sends. In my opinion, toss that gasket and use a generous amount of high temp silicon. Water problem will be gone - new problem is that the customer’s house will smell like pickles. But in your market with the “pickle people” nearby, your customers might not even notice or care. Lol

If the collector box is holding water and the seal is bad, most likely a condensate drain issue. Well throw a level on the furnace and see where the water is running. I have said way back in the 90's.. need some fall towards the condensate drain. Next, that is a counter flow, is the vents insulated going through the attic?. I see alot of this issues. Not just on goodman.. all of them!

those gaskets become an issue after a period of time. remove the gasket and use RTV 173 high temp caulk in hand tube. It's easier to work with. Make sure to remove all the old gasketing or it wont seal correctly.

Multiple brand new high efficient Goodmans leaking from collector box and inducer motor. I'm finding the bolts are loose out of the box. Makes you wonder what type of quality control or lack-there-of is taking place at the Goodman facility. If I were the CEO I'd be ashamed and fix things immediately before installers (customers) choose a different brand

It's not exactly a high temperature area. The air has cooled down enough to allow the moisture to condense out of the combustion exhaust. I bet it's less than 100F inside of that box.

Thanks for the video... Would duct seal be suitable to use instead of high temp silicone for long term use...? I imagine the idea here is just to be able to collect water along the bottom and not have the whole box sealed air tight.. is that correct?

Goodman is famous for collector box leaks. A lot of times it is due to the drain being plugged.

So what did the dispatch say when you go to job and find out that u need to fix collectors box? Did the the customer notice water leaks on the ground or did the unit stop working?

Those Goodman collector boxes have a have a habit of doing that, order a new one. If it were cracked, ya better be testing the heat exchanger. Good call, order the parts and c.y.a.

I see two drain holes on mine. Both attached to drain tubes. I pulled the tubes off and one of the collector box holes still he factory plug in it. Why would somebody install this, attach the drain tube but not take out the plug?

the same furnace can be mounted in different horizontal and vertical positions and the different vacuum sensor or drain ports are used accordingly.

The silicone isn't good enough to replace the gasket? The gasket probably won't seal in the spot where that one stripped screw is located.

What's a good furnace for a reasonable price? My goodman is a nightmare with leaking and can't seem to fix it and is causing mold in ducts etc? I live in FL and thinking of going electric instead of gas as well if it will help as can plug up the safety airways that pull in the hot attic air.

I normally dont do that, here in California ( we have chieap ones) if you get them some heat they won’t allow to go back to do the proper repairs. I let them with out heat till we fix it. People its cheap, even if they live in a million dollar home, furnaces could be 50 year they think its still good
