Many of the problems you have with GoodNotes are actually solvable with one little change in the settings. If you swipe right and hold (or down, depending on your settings) you’ll get the exact same page (dottet, A4, yellow paper, horizontal) as your last page was. The handwriting to text tool does convert bullet points. You can set the eraser to erase the whole streak, only highlighter,...etc. I wish you would have looked at both apps in detail and then compared them, instead of advertising notability

absolutely. was kind of annoying. it seems like he just uses notability and didn't even take the time to learn about goodnotes because a lot of his issues are fixable.

You can make good notes eraser work like notability. There is an option to erase the entire stroke. You can even choose to only erase your highlights and not the actual note which comes in handy. Audio recording and multi window support are in development from what I hear. P.S: being able to erase parts of the note rather than the whole note is actually more useful when you’re writing things fast in class and don’t want to rewrite the whole thing again. The stroke engine on the goodnotes is also far superior than notability. Fun video, learned some new things and renewed my love for good notes...

I seen someone point out the same things out in another video regarding the writing engine, and erasing. That fellow in the other video also seemed to be making his points more realistically, in his actual notes; rather than creating larger than life examples as shown here.

I used to use Notability, but got frustrated with performance, infinite scroll, and the way they organize. I switched to Good Notes 4 just before 5 came out. I upgraded to 5, use it daily, & love it. Handwriting search works GREAT in GoodNotes. I think it might be your handwriting style or the pen style you used. I have HORRIBLE handwriting and it is pretty spot on. I have used real human support multiple times with GoodNotes and they were great. GoodNotes Mac app is in Beta. I would love to see the dual notes screen in GoodNotes Thanks for making this video! It was great to see the comparison and learn some new things.

I appreciate the effort of this video, but I wish you would’ve done more thorough research. A lot of the things you docked goodnotes for are available (often times with simple easy setting changes). I think it’s a big disservice to the app, and a bit misleading in terms of determining what give you the most bang for your buck.

In good notes you can change your template to landscape, and you can change the eraser setting to erase the entire stroke

At 4:31, you rotate the page. That is not how you should switch to vertical scrolling. There is a new setting for that in GoodNotes 5 where you can set scrolling to either horizontal or vertical. The setting is 3 options below the rotate page setting. The result of the above might be why your text conversion was so out of whack. If you wrote in portrait on a rotated landscape page, your handwriting would be rotated with respect to the page to the conversion engine. The conversion engine cannot interpret a sideways letter. The best way to tell would be to open a new notebook (or new quicknote), handwrite a new sentence, and convert the new sentence.

I know it really comes down to personal preference. I'm a student and I use both notability and goodnotes app everyday for school. I used to love notability, but for everyday use, I get comfort and feels more at home using goodnotes. It's more customizable according to however you want to maneuver your notes, and the lasso tool and the smart shape is the major deciding factor for me. I think I only use notability when I'm in lecture and I can't keep up with my teacher's lectures, so I have to record the audio while I'm typing or handwriting my notes. In addition to that, I also make my own digital journal and notebooks, and you get more artistic freedom using goodnotes. So overall, it's handy to have them both, but I rely heavily on goodnotes.

um what? you can rotate the page in goodnotes just by rotating the tablet, you can also add pages just by pulling the page over and it will automatically create a new page of the same type you've been using. how.......and why would you make a comparison when you don't know how to even use the app fully?

ElizabethLauren X Yep. Not everyone wants to erase in a haphazard way. The ability to control what you erase isn’t a bad thing, particularly if you are drawing a diagram or doodle. I also believe Good Notes has an erase screen option that Notability doesn’t.

You also have the infinite scrolling option in Goodnotes 5, just by changing from horizontal to vertical scroll. It adds the page just by swiping anyway - whether in horizontal or vertical.

I would be happy if they can combine their advantages together lol. Notability Pro: Recording while taking notes is very useful when sitting in class (Writing will appear as the recordings plays) Notability can split screen, which you can work two files at the same time Cons: Drawing is better and convenient in Goodnotes 5 Goodnotes 5 Pro: There is a index when you import a textbook whereas Notability lack this function Cons: Mostly mentioned in this video Overall, they are both good apps

I personally use both apps. I use Notability for taking notes when I'm wanting to just write notes while I use GoodNotes for my digital bullet journal and things that use templates like my book logs or role playing game characters.

I like your videos, and I also would choose Notability. I love that you can record while typing. If I decide to take classes, that will come in handy, because I can't always keep up with the Instructors, recording them, when I get home, I can catch what I didn't have time to write. I wish this technology was around when I was a young college student, or even before that in High School, or Jr. High. I had a teacher who always says, "Take out your notebooks", I wish I had this I-Pad Pro, Apple Pencil and Notability. Thank you for your videos.

Goodnotes 5 now has: 1. Infinite Scrolling as an option. (Thats more than notability). 2. You can also make the Eraser mark out completely like Notability (again, you have more options). 3. A Mac App (Although its in Beta). Goodnotes also has a way better zoom-in and write feature.

Great review. Just to clarify one difference you mentioned... you can actually import custom paper types into Notability as well. There’s a bunch of links on their support site. I just downloaded a nice custom paper for keeping stats during baseball games, since I do that for my kids games. Hundreds of options listed out there. I also really like Notability’s zoom bar for handwriting in straight lines and auto-advancing to the next line when you get to the end of each line. Very handy.

To me, what matters most are (1) integration of text, diagrams, and handwriting, (2) whether you want to write or type, and (3) ability to share notes with others and pull in info, and (4) ability to automatically back up notes to someplace besides the cloud. I mostly use GoodNotes 5, but Notability, OneNote, and Evernote have their places. GoodNotes is best for long documents, but it lacks an ability to store notes in someplace other than the cloud. Notability is great. I like to send webpages here and mark them up and to capture thoughts, but switching between text and diagrams and handwriting is less intuitive. OneNote is fantastic for typed notes and integration with Outlook and access via PCs. Evernote is great for bits of notes that have great indexing.

Depends on the course. I study architecture so I got the 12.9 inch. It's great for resting on a table and doing loads of notes. it will also serve as a second display and graphics tablet after the iPad OS update which will pair nicely with my 13 inch MBP Pro

Great video! One thing that wasn’t talked about was file organization in both apps, and that’s one place where GoodNotes does shine. With the new app they put out, you can have as many nested files as you want with which to store your notebooks. So, I’ll have one file for classes, another for clubs, another for receipts & bills, and so on. Then in the classes folder, for instance, I’ll have different subjects. Within a subject, different class numbers like 101, 240, and 364. Within a class, I’ll have all my relevant notes, PDF readings, and scans (imported from Apple Notes’ scan feature) of class handouts. All super useful and easy to find, esp. with the ability to favorite folders and directly access them from the favorites menu. Notability, on the other hand, only has two folder layers: subjects and dividers. Each divider can hold several subjects, which can hold several notebooks. Not terrible, but I really like keeping all my stuff organized and easy to find, and GoodNotes now makes it easier than Notability does. Tbh that one addition by GN made me switch back to it from the otherwise superior Notability (that, and the fact that the zoomed-in writing feature is a bit better designed for me)

I used notability for my whole high school years cause it was a requirement in that school in particular, and I discovered GoodNotes in college. I’ve been using it only for a semester and I’m absolutely in love. I hated school works but after discovering goodnotes, I started to falling in love with studying with it, take notes, reviewing lectures, self studying etc. at the end of last semester, I sold my bio notes that I took with goodnotes for 40 bucks, believe it or not.🤪🤪🤪

I like the review, just that you're reviewing Goodnotes 5 (the latest version), which is not mature in development yet. Goodnotes 4, even though is not the latest, is more mature and fully fleshed out. For example, handwriting recognition is superb, even with my messy cursive handwriting, and there IS a desktop app for Goodnotes that is only compatible for version 4. There's a lot of features from version 4 that has not made it over to version 5 yet. The current Goodnotes 5 seems to be a revamp of Goodnotes 4, and it's promising a lot of things but ... not meeting my expectations yet, so I haven't migrate over. I actually thought about switching to Notability if the screw up with Goodnotes 5 and end-of-life version 4. And I'm with you ... the extra tab bar in Goodnotes is pretty ugly.

New at this, just searching for knowledge to improve my note taking and help me in teaching my class. This video was a great help and answered a lot of question and gave me a lot of tips I did not know. How can I pull up chapters to put on the pad to make notes on the for when I present my class? I tried to take pictures but cannot get them transferred to notability.

I don't know why, but after using both apps for 2 months, I feel like this is a totally paid promotion by Notability. Here's why: Notability, but I have to say, I don't care about which app is better for typing since I only use my iPad as a notebook and if need be, i use Microsoft word for typing which is far far better than any of these. Notability: +ves: Voice Recording, different colours for papers -ves: frustrating to add figueres, dims highlighted words, eraser erases a whole line and if you have a non-stop handwriting, your whole word may be gone even tho you wanted only the last letter to be erased, no options for paper size or orientation Goodnotes5: -ves: No voice recording +ves: Many different paper sizes to choose from, 3 different colour options when writing/highlighting without having to go to colour pallete, you can accurately choose your pen tip size and have 3 options saved ready to use, you can easily draw shapes, the words that you highlight don't get dimmed, highlighter makes a straight line which looks very neat, different settings for every tool including the eraser which allows not only to erase like notability, but also to erase normally and erase only the highlighter, and ... I paid for both apps and used both for university notetaking, pdf reading and highlighting and I can say, Goodnotes5 by far is the best. I respect your opinion as a tech reviewer, but as a student, I don't recommend Notability at all!

I tried GoodNotes 5 today after years using Noteshelf. I still prefer noteshelf, writing feels more natural. I didn’t try notability just because you can’t add custom papers, which I use a lot. GoodNotes has few better features, but writing using noteshelf feels way better.

Happy you mentioned NS-2 at the end. Constantly improving, and should always be part of that discussion, Use Notability, GN-5, and NS-2 here. Tons of features all, but a couple of major faults too. For instance, Page Management is still brutal in Notability.

The worst part about notablilty is that if u have large pdfs, the table of contents is nonexistent so u have to scroll forever. You can auto add horizontal pages in the options and if u swipe to the next page it’ll add the next page in.. you don’t need to press the plus sign. Also in the options u can turn on infinite scroll in goodnotes

You can switch between brush or stroke erasing in OneNote I’ve seen other Notability reviews that say this is a feature as well. A OneNote feature I believe Notability has as well is being able to snap or free draw shapes. I think you should explore the options.

Hi mate, I’m from Australia 🇦🇺 and a veteran affairs pensioner these days. Have returned to Apple with everything with some of my med discharge money. So happy to be back. As my MacBook was black white only lol. Any way this is so far my favourite channel for Apple stuff. Like your attitude and easy to listen. All I can do is photography and play guitar as took everything away from me since Med discharge As was but adrenaline addict but now coffee and photos with my service dog. As wife and kids where other thing lost with this I call hidden disability PTSD but also physical stuff busted. Pension keeps me and Trooper the dog lol. Going but it’s hard to save for stuff and try support a channel Patreon as Aussie dollar sucks when US dollar shown as add ruff 35% on top. Great work not big on giving praise as see few these things go bad. Yet seems like your got your shit together lol. Loved this one sent it to my dr and shrink as they ask me what iOS snd os stuff would be better and I use notability for so much including drs and remembering what to ask and the tick boxes really helps especially after writing big long thing then remembering I should put something to know I’ve mentioned it. Notability lets me out those in at any time. Stay strong keep up work. I’ve Sub to you and will be watching regular from now on. Really great video and comparison, thank you! My only disappointment is when going to the section multi-device support, this doesn't go into any detail on different devices such as Android or Windows-based PC. I would have liked to see how either app copes with having an iPad as well as trying to share notes easily with an android phone as many do use this combo. Thanks.

An additional difference between Goodnotes and Notability is that you can only password protect in Notability. Important to me, and probably to others.

How notes apps integrate (or create) powerpoint or word apps? Also it would be nice to see how to create animation with pencil apps.

Being pedantic first. Portrait or Landscape instead of horizontal and vertical. And reference ‘Force Touch’ instead of press and hold. Really liked this reviews as have been looking for the optimal Notes app for me, and this presents a nice detailed comparison.

I would LLLLOOOVVVEEEE for my notability to get some sort of windows 10 support.... Or at least some way I can few them online in a nice way. I have them backed up to my Google drive but it's not really the same as using the app

Tip: You don't need to rotate it in GoodNotes. Same menu you rotated, change scrolling to vertical. It's always had this feature. If horizontal is enabled, swipe left to add new page, if vertical swipe up. Just throwing this out there incase anyone else needs it.

Why would you make a comparison video if you didnt fully understand how an app work??? 😣 Goodnotes can automatically create new page by scrolling to the left with 2 fingers and the eraser tool can switch to erase the whole stroke or even highlight only

About your video length question, I'd say that since your videos are longer now, I'd be more selective with the ones I'm watching. I'd only click the video if it's a topic I'm really interested in. The great thing about a short video is that it's concise and it gets right to the point. I feel like videos are the new way of getting quick information. If a person really wanted to spend 21 minutes talking about two applications, they would just google a blog or something. When there's so much content competition out there, I'd rather see as many videos as possible in a short amount of time. Although your content is great, it just means I'd unconsciously sacrifice your content. Furthermore, when there's a search and you happen to be in the suggestions, people (including myself) usually click the shortest video. That being said, if you're doing an in-depth review of a product, 10-minute videos are usually the sweet spot in my opinion

I use both, I think to compare the two is not fair as they both have their pro and con's to be honest I use both but now I lean more towards notability due to their audio recording function

I think in pictures and icons. So when you switch quickly between the two apps by name, there is a lag where I’m trying to switch the name to the icon. Would it be possible to pop an icon of the app on the screen when you are talking about the specific app?

Nice video! Great public speaker! Speaking of which.... I bought my iPad Air (2019) mainly for outlines for public speaking. Sounds notability is the app to go with here, but I'm curious how you feel like it compares to Microsoft OneNote which happens to be free

I'm thinking of buying an iPad and Apple pencil to use when I start college instead of having multiple real notebooks. Is notability available on the regular iPad? I'm looking into buying Apple's "iPad" since its only $329.99 compared to the new iPad Pro and the iPad Air, and I was wondering how well the Apple pencil takes notes on the regular/plain iPad.

I use goodnotes 5 & i choose to do so only because of 1 reason & that is the eraser tool, why would i like to erase the Entire stroke. And notability do not give any option to raise a particular thing

This reviewer is quite biased toward Notability, so take his comments with. grain of salt. Just goes to show you that it comes down to personal pref. Many of the things this presenter likes about Notability (and does not like about GoodNotes), is exactly why I prefer GoodNotes. For example, I hate the way Notability over-erases. When I want to erase, I want to be precise. But the presenter likes the full-on over-erase feature of Notability. I also like the templates and notebook approach of GoodNotes. Notability overall has fewer features to keep you organized. Where GoodNotes allows you to nest folders, Notability does not; so your notes can become a disorganized mess. NOTE: For me, Goodnotes has never has trouble converting handwriting to text. Not sure why this guy had trouble, but I have never had an issue with this. Your results may vary.

As a student, sometimes I want to read my writings on mac or iPhone. GoodNotes does not support mac apps. Even though there are multi tab functions, which is the most fascinating feature of GoodNotes and makes difference from Notability, I use Notability.

The three best notes apps on ios - for heavy users. Use the three of them on a daily basis. Surprisingly, reviewers mention Notability and GN5 a lot more than NS2. Disagree with what was said about NS2 being more of a typing app. In fact, in front of groups (or in meetings), on a projector, NS2 is my go-to. Notabilty does have figures, but not user-friendly at all. And its page management is awful. All-in-all, three superb apps. Too bad we can’t combine them ...

I have both! I Love the presentation Mode in GoodNotes 4...sth. That should be implemented in goodnotes 5 soon ( hopefully) and Notability doesnt have

uhmm, when you tried translating handwritten to text in goodnotes the stroke size was enormous, no wonder notability could easily understand tiny thin lines over bold nearly filled in circles.

The secondary camera looked weird to me, but maybe that’s just because I’m so used to watching you from the front one for so long. 😅 I’ve been interested in Notability for a while, but I’m not sure I’d use it that much for what I intend it.
