A3, I just discovered your channel recently and it is just fantastic. I have been a flatland pilot for 45 years (Denmark) and learn so much from your films. It will very helpful for my flights out of St. Auban. Thank you so much, keep them coming please.

Sunny side without snow is always better if wind is present. Snow is not soarable unless the sun is directly on it.

So true, I saw it just as I came around the corner.... I guess I had to learn it the hard way

The wind must have been very week because you didn't get much sink on the lee side.

Thank you very much for sharing a great video. I've instructed a season in that area and to me you made the wrong choice. It would have been safer to turn around and go back the way you came around to the sunny side, specially if you've never crossed that pass before. Be safe and maybe we will meet in the alps in the summer.

The valley south of Gendarme looks very scary but one is of course allways local of Barcelonette. I learned something new.

Thanks A3 for this lesson. I have faced several times this same pecular decison point. I do confess that would have not attempted to cross the pass (col de Restefond) with so small energy marging, even with a DG800. You really impress me. WA (Flying Smurf on the fin) does hope to have the chance and honour to flyby A3 in South Alpes. Congratulations for all your videos. Please continue. Will you be in Alpes end March begining of April?

Thank you for your friendly reply! I will be in Serres so the Plan! But Alpha 3 is still not airworthy. We are in the midst of the 3.000h Inspection. Probably SY will be my callsign... 122.175...

Thank you very much for sharing this, very interesting. But: 10:28 "I can cross with enough safety margin".... You crossed at 80km/h. Your safety margin was actually close to 0. I could see your speed dropping down to or close to 80 km/h a couple of times, and that close to gently rising slopes with unknown wind conditions and related turbulences. That would be my top item to work on.

Stefan, thank you for watching closely... Thats a fair comment! I already have an eye on that. Even though the LS 5 is a bit different from modern gliders. I have often issues with orher gliders while thermaling. With the LS 5. I m circling relativly steep and usually 15 to 20 km/h slower then other modern gliders. That is because of the Wingprofile and the relativ low wingload. Never the less, I need to gain more margin, so close to the terrain!

Die Überfluggeschwindigkeit über den Pass ist aber wirklich gering (etwas über 100 km/h bei ca 10:30), da ist nix mit (Energie-)Reserven, die du zu Beginn als einen der wichtigen Punkte aufzählst
@Alpha-III
@Alpha-III 7 месяцев назад
merci fürs Feedback, tatsächlich sollte man das schneller machen obgleich die LS 5 deutlich langsamer geflogen werden kann als neuere Flieger....

@@Alpha-III On a separate note, since I've always been a flatland pilot, it was a big surprise to me that you were able to safely fly on both sides of the ridge. The only time I was on the wrong side of a ridge, it was more falling than flying. How do you tell when it is safe to fly on both sides?
