Google Account Backup & Restore for Android 

There are many ways to backup and transfer your personal info from one phone to another but this is all about using what is built into ever Android phone. Do you use Google Autofill?

Man! I'm 6:35 minutes in and I paused in part because my attention span needs work, but this is so much better than the last video I clicked on.The guy was talking about backing up and restoring but not showing us "non-tech babies" how to do it like you are. Listening to you thoroughly walk me through the process for close to 20 minutes beats the frustration that I feel searching for the right video....one that does not use a language other than English but has an English title....Thank you. I'm getting my old phone and my new one. This is gonna take tenacity. Rewind!

Once I figured that out, it went a lot more smoothly, saving me hours and hours - and hours of hard work. Much appreciated.

Question: 13:27 I backed up from my old phone folders with pictures for instance Facebook, and Instagram. On my new phone it doesn't show the actual folders is that by default? Whatever folders you back up to the cloud it just reorganizes them by date not by folders?

Thanks for this. Recently updated to Android 11 on my Moto G stylus and it sucks. The battery drains WAYYYY faster now and my lock screen is jacked up. So now I'm gonna reset my phone so I can go back to Android 1o. Just wanted to back up all my data before I erase everything. And this video helped with the process. Thanks

Thank you so much for your instructions. You are a life saver. I was able to backup and restore the files and data to my Samsung phone. My phone went Rouge this morning. I picked up my phone to check message, on its own,, the screen was downloading I don't know what. Then the screen was erasing data which resulted in a factory reset. My carrier ( V ) could not tell me what happened with my phone and refused to connect me with Tech Support. I was advised that I may not be able to recover my data. . I was on a chat session with my carrier from 12:46 am to 3:27 am this morning with no resolution. I was advised to go to Google to backup and reset my phone; the steps were incomplete, and the steps were not accurate. Thanks again.

Doesn't explain how to use Google to restore back up from google drive after the phone has already been set up

Is there a way to manually restore the backup after you've already gone through the setup process? I've installed a custom rom but it doesn't give an option to add a google account during the setup process which also means that there is no way to restore.

What happens if you already set up your new phone and skipped the restore option? How does one restore from an old phone if you're already using the new phone after the initial set up?

What about individual apps? I have the apex launcher and I want the same settings over to my new android phone. How would I do that?

Hello Brett - I just purchased a Verizon Galaxy Note 10+ running Android 10. I can not get to the "Active backups" as depicted in your video. I can not find my way to where I can customize my backups by selecting the device apps/folders/etc... Any thoughts? Any guidance you could provide would be much appreciated. Thank you.

So will the stuff I have saved in a certain app will be saved over if the app is backed up? I deleted a bunch of music files by accident and was wondering if they would be on my Google back up if my last back up was 2 days ago

Is there a way to download particular files from the google drive backup? The files from my notepad app didn't transfer over and my old phone can't be charged because the charger port was damaged so I have no way of turning the phone back on, but I got the files backed up on the google drive backup but it won't let me access it no matter how much I tap.

Does this also recreate your screen layout, widget/icon arrangement, and wall paper identically? Or just data and files?

I knew a few days ago old android phone was failing so I backed it up to google drive, and the backup is sitting there. I bought new android phone today thinking it would be easy to restore the backup from google drive - but it seems impossible to do it. In new phone's settings - the "backup" option is there - but no option for "restore". So how do I get the backup to this new phone? The old phone completely failed now - so I can't get into it at all. Any suggestions?

Does it back up Apps with data though? seems like it's only app apk files, no data..

Great video. I wanted to ask you if this method of backing up your android data to your google account, comprehends even the whatsapp data or not? Or should we back up our whatsapp data separately by using the specific backup function into the app itself? How much space does google give your for backing up whatsapp data for free into the google servers (google drive i guess?)? Last question, is there any android 'itunes" type free software that permits you to do a full backup of the data on the pc and then possibily restore it on another android phone? Thank you

This video was very informative. Thank you. A couple of questions.. My phone takes up 94 gigs of space. What is Googles default drive size or do I have to purchase more space or unlimited space before attempting backup and restore? Also I purchased my wife an unlimited GDriveCloud drive space. Is that a Google account or is it a different account?

Hry Brett, how secure is google photos? Im always weary of using it because of it getting hacked or anything. I had to reset my 3xl and moved my photos/videos to a usb drive and back which caused a whole mess. It changed most of my photos "date take" date to "date modified" date. I don't know how to fix that. Btw do you have a video to transfer from pixel 2 pixel

Hi, lately i have noticed a bug with android 9 or 10 where when you have security on like face unlock, pin, finger print and then you go settings - about phone - back up : the option to backup now its all grey out and says "waiting to back up" it only goes blue from grey and works when you have no security on only swipe or none. i have researched it and it seems to be a problem with a lot of android devices pixel, moto, samsung, etc have you seem this there a long discussion on the google forum i have tried so many things its so annoying. people have tried factory resets, removing there google accounts but its still the same.

Hi, I am preparing in advance if I one day lose my phone or if my phone is completely faulty screen black cracked/dead, I want to recover everything to a new phone e.g. photos, sms, whatsapp, telegram, call history, app settings, chrome bookmarks/opened tabs/history/downloaded pdf/files, even after I have lost access to my old phone. May I know if I follow every step in this video, is it enough to recover everything (latest updated data exactly like the day I lose the phone) from the old phone back in a new phone? im not able to backup to google drive. I have a Samsung s9+ and I go into 'Backup & Restore' like in the video but there is no 'Backup Now', backup account is showing, it keeps saying 'Waiting to backup ...'. in google drive there is no backup file. ive tried this after a few days when phone has been on WiFi, has been plugged into charger and has had the screen off.

I have a Motorola 5G Ace. For some incomprehensible reason, Google has made restoring data much more difficult to do. The 'backup & restore" tab is now just 'accounts." And there is no simple "restore" button like there used to be. And I can't figure out how to restore my apps & data. Can't figure it out in device settings, can't figure it out in Google One, can't figure it out anywhere or anyhow. And Google did not automatically restore my data to my new phone upon account setup, despite a back-up I did on my old phone the previous day.

Hey Brett, i was just worried to know that it's been one week and my phone do not want to save photos to Google photos. I did everything, checked for autorisations, for the account bacup setting turned on, reinstalling the app and it keeps saying "preparing the save"... do you have any solution for my Galaxy S8 to sync the photos with Google photos app ?

Android has just forced my phone to OS update (even though "automatic system updates" in developer options was set to "Off"). Now some apps don't work. Some of them don't have versions compatible with the latest Android version. It's worse than a nightmare! Does every Android user go through the same trauma?

During set up in choose a (backup to restore) option if by mistake i press dont restore will i get my old backup again i mean i have a chance again to restore my old backup or it will erease permenent if i can get old restore back how ? Will i have to restore phone again

What if your phone (here Samsung S20) does not have Google Drive by default in apps,... and once you go through set up process of your phone (even though you're logging in to your google account, but wiothout ggole drive on the phone) it doesn;t ask you about restoring data from your old phone... - and later on that option from google drive is not available (you can see list of your backups onb google drive, but you cannot use them)?..

I have a Huawei honor mate tablet and I've never had to buy extra storage for the drive but with there notifications that you won't get emails if you don't have enough storage I bought the small one, I noticed that my internal storage saved downloads and other documents from like Social Security I downloaded it and saved it to the drive but a ton went to google docs which I never used? Including google books that I purchased doc's said they were expired but when I went to google books there still there thank goodness! But of all things that didn't back up was my many bookmarks from my laptop and passwords and Auto fill, what is going on? Is my tablet WiFi only because of USA ban to old 3 years? I've looked everywhere and doc's and sometimes google drive come in as a text application and I can't figure out how and that even happened on my laptop that I haven't used in 3 years! Should I get my laptop out of the drawer and see if I can recover some bookmarks? I don't have a smartphone and absolutely hate the idea of one but I'm going to have to get a phone because I have 3G I'm looking at a no brand one 5G from ebay unlike amazon ebay refunds and returns just because you don't like it! 134$ is a lot for me which is part of the reason why I haven't gotten a smartphone+ I don't want to be notified for something like my tweet was liked! People are not engaged with one another because of this expensive addiction!

The text message doesn't back up. I logged onto my Google Drive, and it just says my data, including text messages, have been backed up. But there was no way for me to retrieve it or apply the backed up data to my new Android device.

hi Brett, can you pls help me...i couldn't exactly follow everything...i'm not very tech savy and before i even stumbled on your vlog, i had already done some sort of set up which probably impacted and pre empted what you demonstrated here...on top of that, my original phone is a Sony so the settings and the labeling is very different...i just basically want to be able to upload videos onto my newly established vlog coming from both my new and original phone..the new phone is a Samsung A71...can you help me out? or can you create a vlog about that?
