I’ve been in the IT industry for 28 years 24 years as a software engineer and 4 years as a security engineer. I just finished the Google Cybersecurity program and would have to say, it was well worth it. I took it really 4 months to complete about $200. I took my time and really deep into the subjects did extra researching. I have some friends that went to really expensive boot camps. One of them spent $20,000 and they didn’t even learn as much as I did.

I did the yearly Coursera program to be able to study more than juat one course. For the year was 240. After passing the Google cybersecurity certificate, I am now working on the Google IT certificate to deeper my understanding on networks and OS. I do find the IBM cybersecurity certificate to be a good way to supplement even more on the Google cybersecurity certificate. The hands on projects are enjoyable and really help with learning the information. I love hearing about how others are going through their journey. @Nano-71 Месяц назад
@Lilyrosedyi I decided to get the security plus after the google certificate because it's a well-known certificate that the ATS will notice. Therefore, it gives you a slight chance to interview with recruiters.Also, after completing the google cert, you get a 30% discount towards the voucher for the sec+ exam. But I am very well that the sec+ won't guarantee a job, so that's why im doing labs and networking with others to help land a role. Hope this helps. 😄

@unixguy I have a long question , I am going to start a bachelors degree in networking and cybersecurity this September 2024, the country I live in the tuition for a university is nowhere near the cost in the u.s so cost isn’t a factor for me. I’ve been employed at a company for over 6 years and they have agreed to transfer to the m.i.s department/i.t department so technically when I complete my degree I would have 4 years at an entry level I.t role. Where I failed is in writing my resume. My resume did not list or elaborate on my skills and practical trainings at all. But I live the roadmap which UnixGuy laid for us in such a clear way.

I'm glad I watched this collab. Two of the best in the space! I personally got the Google IT cert to gain the fundamentals and then got the Google Cybersecurity Cert (I'm coming from a sales background so really had to start from the basics). I have been feeling like instead of spending money I don't really have to get the SEC+ I'd be better off just doing labs and gaining actual hands on experience. Currently building a lab in azure with an attack vm, a target vm, a splunk server vm and a windows server vm. Its a hefty project but I'm learning more trying to be hands on than multiple choice would have ever taught me.

Instructions unclear, I got both in August. Also, I agree, Googles cert felt way more like it was prepping me for a job, and the S+ felt like cramming to get a check box to get past recruiters that require it. For perspective I earned Googles, then studied for S+. I would reccomend that order if you want both. Google got me about 60% of what i needed to earn S+, i only had to study for 2 weeks to fill in the rest of my S+ knowledge.

Mr Josh i compared certification by comptia, Google , ibm, isc2, and Microsoft. Following is the conclusion from chat gpt. 😂 Conclusion For a balanced combination of difficulty, coverage of critical topics, practical skills, and industry acceptance, CompTIA Security+ remains a top choice. If you seek a certification with more focus on security principles and risk management, consider the Certified in Cybersecurity (ISC2). Other certifications are molded around their respective security infrastructure.

If you wanna land a gov job, sec+ is usually a requirement. It really is comparing 2 different things and a security+ with proper training will include lab work and so on. I did both lab work in GSC and sec+.It's like comparing the CEH (mcq) and saying it has no hands-on (which is incorrect as the training uses labs too.. and the CEH Master is more akin to an OSCP with both hands-on portions in the actual exam

This is an amazing collaboration with my favorite RU-vidrs! I totally agree- I took my CompTIA exam Seven months ago, and I barely remember anything from it. 😂 It really wasn't worth the stress and money involved, especially with all the memorization of thousands of questions just to answer 75 multiple choice and a couple of performance questions. The boot camp I attended proved us with voucher cost almost $600 Canadian, and if I hadn't passed, it would have been another huge expense. I completed my Google IT certification last year and I'm looking forward to diving into cybersecurity next! Thanks for all the insights!

Hi UnixGuy I would like to know if it is possible to end up with my first Job with a Google cyber-security professional certificate and GRC training certificate?
@UnixGuy
@UnixGuy Месяц назад
It’s possible, some people scored a job with less BUT it isn’t a good strategy to do just two courses and expect a job. Instead, the idea is to keep learning until you land a job. Not sure which ‘GRC certificate’ you’re referring to but this is the GRC course that I designed that contains everything in the GRC world: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C6IgksBpMF4.htmlsi=Gs572W-FYdXHu7Et This is the ‘how to get a job’ plan that I lay out, where the idea is to keep learning until you land a job (whether you do it with one cert or more…), everyones journey going to be different: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rz0RL4Xue-A.htmlsi=gnAH9FKJthDhTwE5

Every cybersecurity job I see has a Security + requirement to even get a chance at an interview… I have the Google Cybersecurity Certification and apparently employers don’t care. It’s frustrating as a 100% disabled Veteran that is trying to make a better life for my family but the only thing holding me back is a certification and minimum 2-5 years of experience…

sorry to hear about your situation. Not ‘every job’ wants it, but if thats how you feel then just do it. I have been more pleased with newer practical certifications like BTL1 over Net+ and Sec+ (which I also have) however the latter are an important part of DoD 8570 and Google's cert is not. There are certain merits to the first to market certs like Comptia. That certainly doesn't mean I'm a big fan of Comptia - I couldn't wait to get Sec+ out of the way, knowing how that was all going to go after doing Net+. The practical based, newer gen certs are much better. Absorbing a body of knowledge with no practical application in the learning process isn't pointless but no one is going to hand you a multiple choice exam on your first day at work. You say none of your colleagues care at all about certifications so what then would you recommend to someone trying to get a job in cyber security with no direct experience? Labs alone? Even if the candidate has IT adjacent experience would you recommend AGAINST certification?
@UnixGuy
@UnixGuy Месяц назад
I recommend certifications to build out skills that you can put on your resume. The certifications that I’m not a fan of are the theory based ones where people cram to pass an exam. Instead I recommend the ones that you mentioned like ‘BTL1’ for example here is a sample plan: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rz0RL4Xue-A.htmlsi=KptDh2we1xVdekD9
